She knows that it is an impossible ask, but she asks it all the same. And she stands strong until her feet begin to ache, until the weight in her chest brings her to her knees.

The woman sinks, feeling water lap at her legs. She's close enough to reach one or both of Theo's Pokémon, and she does because the motion seems natural.

He mentions Vela and she begins to nod her head silently. What tears had fallen continue the same path, carving damp rivers against either cheek. She doesnt brush them away for fear she'd draw attention to herself. And the sand is annoying.

"She's important to me. Keep her safe, please."

Whatever tentative, reluctant eye-contact they might have had is severed with a long exhale of smoke and a tilt of his cheek. Emma doesn't dwell on either reaction, frankly because she does not care.[break][break]

Her own self-loathing had nothing to do with him, and wasn't any of his business.[break][break]

He prompts them to continue and she doesn't argue. Rather, she shoulders her rifle and picks up the pace, overtaking King's steps to take the lead instead.

And she means it, even if there's a lift to her tone that might suggest otherwise. Humor is not her strong suit, nor did she make any real attempt to make it so. She was too cold, too serious, too severe.[break][break]

This time she doesn't reach to take the cigarette from him. She's had her fill, lingering now on the burning sensation in her throat and chest. It's raw, but it's a reminder.[break][break]

Emma remains silent while he explains. It isn't the answer to her question, and instead is just a blatant insult- no, an observation, on her lack of attentiveness. [break][break]

Emma takes another drag before she passes it back. Her index fingers taps the ashes off the bottom, then extends to him.[break][break]

But there is a look in her eye, a far-away stare. She swallows, uncomfortable for a long moment. If only it were that easy, to just jump back in like nothing happened. She bites the inside of her lip for a moment, thinking hard about her journey so far.

She can smell them long before she sees the carton jostle in his hand. Emma glances between his palm and his face, lingering on the cigarette between his lips. It brings back memories, none of them good.[break][break]

"They'll kill you, you know."[break][break]

She chooses not to take one, instead regarding him with thinly veiled frustration. The woman's neutrality seems to falter in his presence, replaced with raw emotion and agitation. She chalks it up to her injuries, to the splitting headache, to the restlessness in her veins.[break][break]

"Why are you here?"[break][break]

The smell of smoke and a lit cigarette is overwhelming. She closes her eyes against it, tilting her chin away.

What he says prompts her to come to a halt, if only for a moment. It is long enough for him to pick up on, long enough for her to feel heat in her face, feel confusion, feel..[break][break]
She exhales, quiet. Her attention flickers from the back of his neck to a flattened patch of grass, and then out.[break][break]

And yet she turns to watch him, drawn in by his dry chuckle, by his sarcasm. Her golden gaze passes over him to land on the Lucario, and she sucks in a sharp breath. The woman's reaction is instinctive, momentarily stricken by shock.[break][break]

A rekindled memory surfaces, a reminder of pain and guilt. The man's Lucario is the spitting image, obviously, of Gavin's. But his had been lost, and she'd never had a chance to bond with the beast.[break][break]

She mimics him, sarcastic. He tosses the foil over his shoulder and she frowns, brows coming together in a very distinct scowl.[break][break]

And then she strolls over to him to snatch the binoculars from his hands. She lifts them to her eyes, scanning back and forth along the treeline. Nothing. Whatever sign she had earlier, whatever lock she'd had: it's gone.[break][break]

Emma scowls, her single visible golden eye following him. It takes a moment for her to refocus, wincing against the sun above her and the effort it takes to change her focus. He is trifling.[break][break]

"What are you even doing here? I didn't request a partner."[break][break]

Her attention shifts to the soda in his hand, up to the straw as it pierces his lips. He sucks, loudly, knocking back gulp after gulp. Obnoxious.

A ranger, was he? One of those righteous Pokemon activists that baffled her. They, too, used Pokemon like tools, but they boasted companionship and trust. She scoffs, unimpressed and more than a little tickled at his arrogance. If she could see him, she's almost certain he's posturing.[break][break]

"Let's see, then."[break][break]

With a gentle toss, Emma releases a Pokemon. The white glow fades away to reveal a golden-furred Luxray. It flexes its claw into the ground, nails biting sand, tail lashing from side to side in anticipation.

The sunglasses come off, and her rifle rests comfortably in her arms, propped up against a rocky ledge. Slowly, the woman shifts both her weight and the tools, following the line of sight of the ruffled skirt of her target.[break][break]

Gardevoir hunting.[break][break]

Only one eye is uncovered, and it is certainly a strain to focus so intently. But it's a start, and where she's given an inch she'll take a mile. [break][break]

Unfortunately, the other eye remains bandaged and unusable. The tightness in her jaw is a side-effect of that, of the dread she carries on her thin shoulders. [break][break]

A shadow passes in front of her rifle and she pulls back, breathing out a sigh as she stands up to face whomever is on the other end of her weapon. It's loaded with tranquilizers.
