HYACINTH INC’s pocketbook always had dedicated lines for charity-- more than, it seemed, even expenses. So it was of no consequence for Luke to promise to camp on a deserted island for a mere seven days, chronicling his journey and adventures for the sake of a live stream of donors, with all the proceeds going to Hoenn’s much-needed fund for disaster relief.

He’d just finished his daily vlog and had set up in a portable beach chair under a woven canopy of Nanab leaves with a halved coconut in hand when the jungle gave a massive shudder. A Nanab tree wavered and then fell with a crash; moments later, his Kabutops stalked out of the greenery with her scythe arms full of berries, bark still stuck to their sharp curves.

Luke swung his legs off the chair and made to stand when a rather frantic-looking young woman came crashing through the undergrowth. Ever the consummate gentleman, he peered over his sunglasses at her and gestured to the bounty of the jungle his Kabutops laid at the small camping table to his right.

Though Lukan utilized the assistance of a veritable army of talent scouts to find individuals and bring them into the fold, he’d never stayed his hand at doing it, himself. It carried with it the benefit of not needing countless pages of signatures and red tape. When he could look through an artist’s body of work and approve them post haste, it saved all parties involved quite a bit of time, indeed.

He’d worked with SHEBA INOUE before, with much success and enjoyment-- he hoped-- for both of them. She was a beautiful woman-- had been, was now, and, likely, would always be, though she’d recently bowed out of the limelight. She had many other talents, of course, but Lukan was, despite all evidence to the contrary, a simple man, and one of his greatest joys in life was dressing a beautiful woman.

“These are the newest pieces from the ‘24 resort collection,” he explained as he shifted through a rack of dresses and separates, in a series of satiny metallic sheens that ran through his fingers like liquid. “Gold will compliment your coloring quite nicely. If these are too formal for your tastes…” he stepped back and gestured to another rack, which had a series of more conservative dresses with soft pastel florals “...these might suit. Take your pick.” He smiled at her as he straightened a shoulder on a hanger, a real, genuine smile.

Those who would come to know Luke would discover that he liked clothes. They were a bit of a private passion for him. He jumped at the chance to dress anyone, and the act of tailoring a wardrobe to someone was one of the greatest ways he showed his affection. It was one of the only times he let his guard down. He wasn’t flaunting his wealth or his taste for pride’s sake, he was doing it because he enjoyed it.

He’s gone down and come up again and is winding up his climbing lines when the large cervid approaches. Luke’s eyes glance up without moving his head, so as not to alarm the creature; he gives an almost imperceptable waggle of his fingers and his Squawkabilly comes through with an aerial ace that knocks the Wyrdeer’s front legs akimbo, twisting it painfully halfway through its body and sending it plummeting to the ground on its shoulder.

HYACINTH INC was an entertainment giant of epic proportions, and one of their great boasts was advantageous pay and rights for their artists and those they represented; they did not deal with those of salacious records; they supported the underprivileged, allowing them to have a chance to raise their voice; they donated almost ceaselessly to charity; and they kept everything apparent and aboveground, so as not to be seen hiding or concealing anything of note.

It could be argued, if one cared to look close enough, HYACINTH INC’s stunning record was a smoke and mirrors show to hide its CEO’s en flagrante nature… though there was little there worth hiding, to be sure. A series of failed relationships; a number of children out of wedlock, all of whom were well cared for, acknowledged, and firmly secured by buoyant trust funds; and expensive proclivities towards drink, food, travel, and nice clothes. All of them vices shared by numerous individuals-- least of all, his father, which is how we got here in this first goddamn place-- and none of them shameful enough to the average person to be worth crucifixion.

He sees in Mint (a very unique name for a very unique individual, Lukan assumed, with the right amount of wry sarcasm on the word unique) the same smile he himself possesses in the face of flashing cameras. Their hands meet, the younger man’s (he’s a boy, really) pale one subsumed in Luke’s own.

“I find offices quite bland and stifling, in truth,” Luke admitted, as though it were some great weakness of his. He stepped back and gestured to a lounge chair next to his own, striped fabric warmed by the sun. “Please, sit. If the water is more your fancy, the club has a shop if you find yourself in need of suitable attire. You can charge it all to my card.”

He lowered himself down to his original chair, bare torso sitting up, head cocked to the side.

“Forgive me for getting right down to business, but I’m far too excited to beat around the bush. I’ve seen your online profiles and your content, and I find it quite charming. I’d love to sign you to my entertainment label.” He could see the serialized TV shows, makeup brands, and clothing lines dancing before his sunglass-covered eyes.

The flashing light in the distance made him suppress a wince. Contrasting sharply against the overreaching darkness, Luke predicted that was not a good sign. As if on cue, the shadows around them began to move, as lurching figures staggered out from the gloom, half-walking, half-falling towards the beacon like marionettes with cut strings.

“Muertentes,” Lukan said, at Naomi Sato’s comment, drawing his shoulders back in revulsion, half spat like a curse, half wry and scathing. If he hadn’t been standing here looking out at the scene in front of them, he would have thought she was insane. He said silent thanks to Avery for making him sit through countless zombie movies.

He nodded at Nomi’s instruction. “I assume all other standard rules apply. No loud noises.”

And so, they descended. Any time one of the unsleeping dead seemed to take notice of them, Nomi’s glowing Pokemon would draw it off, often accumulating a large pack of them, before returning to their side, unaccompanied.

Gita sat comfortably on his shoulder, occasionally bending her head to ruffle through her feathers. Luke released Zavala, and the little Charcadet stepped loyally at his side, head on the swivel, taking everything in with wide, childlike eyes.

As they made for their intended target, Luke paid attention to the crumbled walls of the city around them. They would, occasionally, be strewn with graffiti, done in a wobbly, panicked way, as though whoever had done the art had been on the verge of losing nerve and running away at any point. A great dark shape, triangular and sharp and colored in with rapid, terrified squiggles, was the purveying theme overall.

“How many times have you been here?” he asked Ms. Sato, continuing to examine the drawings as they walked. “And why do you keep coming back?”

He was unsure exactly what he’d expected at the idea of Lesser Megalopolis. He’d imagined, perhaps, a burnt out city. Maybe how they always appeared in those zombie movies Avery (his oldest daughter would be 14 this year) liked.

There were multiple benefits to hosting and chaperoning an arts camp: the funding and safe space would allow young minds to flourish; the charity of it looked good on resumes, in magazine articles that may or may not tout a potential run at Hoenn council; it made his PR department smile; he got first pick of the next crop of creative geniuses, keeping other agencies out of the running.

It also meant he got to rub knuckles with famous types like luciano fisk . “Everyone, please thank Mr. Fisk for agreeing to be our guest today,” Luke said, gesturing to the blue-haired man and waiting for the chorus of thanks and applause to die down. “He’s going to talk about himself for a bit and you’ll have a chance to ask him any questions you might have. Then we’ll break into groups for our first activity.”

A myriad of lines and carabiners decorate the steep drop down into this particular section of Meteor Falls as climbers from all across the region flock to explore its hidden depths. It is, of course, significantly less risky to engage in dangerous sports with the presence of Pokemon, able to swoop in and pluck you out of harm’s way, if the need arises.

Elise pleases him by electing to use his nickname. Luke’d never had much use for his full name, and, as a bastard, no royal titles were ever truly bequeathed upon him. Hyacinth had been the Unovan version of his mother’s maiden name, Jacinta. It put him in mind of regal, tropical blue birds; that had been why he’d chosen it.

“A fine choice,” Luke says with a nod of his head. A brief discussion in Kalosian with the sommelier causes the man to scurry off to fetch their wine, while a busboy fills the delicate crystal goblets at their table with sparkling water, and another busboy deposits a piping hot basket of fresh bread on the delicate lace tablecloth.

“I’m very thankful you decided to join me this evening,” Luke says, smiling across the table, an affectation of warmth in his tone. “I find it’s so important for new blood to acquaint itself with old blood. Better to ease the intermingling of the two. Have you been in Hoenn long, your highness?”
