A RUINED CITY IN ULTRA SPACE. It is unclear whether this is a different universe's Ultra Megalopolis or smaller colony. Regardless, it is a dark city with intermittent sections of flickering, artificial light... Large, black prism-like skyscrapers loom above flat black streets. Much ruin has fallen here, but you get the sense that you're not alone...

He was unsure exactly what he’d expected at the idea of Lesser Megalopolis. He’d imagined, perhaps, a burnt out city. Maybe how they always appeared in those zombie movies Avery (his oldest daughter would be 14 this year) liked.

In any case. These strange, sharp shapes, like someone’s attempt at a futuristic city, were grand enough in their consideration to push even him to silence.

Like luke hyacinth, Julien had not known what to expect when he signed up for an expedition into a place called Lesser Megalopolis. He was told to expect the worst, the most ominous of warnings for something that seemed organized like a tourist attraction.[break][break]

They did not have a guide, though — only a young graduate student by the name of Naomi Sato who had claimed to have visited several such dimensions before.[break][break]

Julien took mental note of the haphazard state of security around the rift that separated their world from Lesser Megalopolis. If it was any indication of security elsewhere in the region, then he no longer wondered why rumors of strange phenomena came from Hoenn.[break][break]

And he was not pleased.[break][break]

"Of course," he said to Luke, releasing his Delphox in a flash of light. It was meager, however, in contrast to the deep and entrenching darkness of the alien city.[break][break]

In the distance and high overhead, a light turned on from the top of a tall structure. Somewhere nearby, he heard the sound of many feet scrambling across pavement. It grew louder as whatever was moving drew nearer.[break][break]

Julien tensed. "Alethius, prepare for combat," he told his Pokémon.

It had been inevitable that, eventually, Slateport University would see fit to begin sending some of their own top researchers - professors and graduate students alike - into the rifts. Nomi could have shied away from involving herself in the university's program: after all, anything she discovered while on a League-sanctioned expedition would be the League's intellectual property as much as Nomi's - as much as Rocket's.[break][break]
But she didn't shy away. She was a clever young woman, and she could recognize the importance of the bigger picture: the rifts would be critical set pieces in the war to come, an apocalyptic battle on a cosmic scale. Ever since the fight at the Ancient Tomb, in which Nomi had returned with a distinctly foreboding sense of "we've all been played", she had begun to grow weary of the constant, often petty squabbling between the League and Rocket. She was loyal, of course, but she wasn't a fool.[break][break]
The DRK Triad were the real enemy. The League was merely a nuisance that could either be ignored, cast aside, or leveraged.[break][break]
Any proper scientist knew how to leverage an opposing force. It was simply a matter of physics.[break][break]
"This dimension is filled with the undead," Nomi said, as casually as if she were describing the items in a kitchen cabinet. "Undead Megalopolians, to be exact. That's what's coming."[break][break]
She eyed up the men accompanying her. Neither Rangers nor League military, she found it rather frivolous of the League to allow just anyone inside the rifts. Then again, in their society, enough money could get anyone anywhere, no matter how inappropriate. She ought not have been surprised that her companions were a CEO and a politician respectfully.[break][break]
"I recommend we head for that building," she pointed to a solid shape in the distance, its architecture somewhat reminiscent of the Slateport University library. "It looks more structurally sound than some of the others. We'll be safe from the hoard in there."[break][break]
She took out a Pokeball and released Valerian. The illumina Sylveon shone brightly in the gloomy darkness, revealing the mass of bodies lumbering awkwardly towards them. "Light distracts them, and they detest heat. Fend them off with fire, if you have it."[break][break]
Her tone was commanding for one so small and seemingly innocent. But this time, she hoped to spend the majority of her time in Lesser Megalopolis studying rather than just surviving.

The flashing light in the distance made him suppress a wince. Contrasting sharply against the overreaching darkness, Luke predicted that was not a good sign. As if on cue, the shadows around them began to move, as lurching figures staggered out from the gloom, half-walking, half-falling towards the beacon like marionettes with cut strings.

“Muertentes,” Lukan said, at Naomi Sato’s comment, drawing his shoulders back in revulsion, half spat like a curse, half wry and scathing. If he hadn’t been standing here looking out at the scene in front of them, he would have thought she was insane. He said silent thanks to Avery for making him sit through countless zombie movies.

He nodded at Nomi’s instruction. “I assume all other standard rules apply. No loud noises.”

And so, they descended. Any time one of the unsleeping dead seemed to take notice of them, Nomi’s glowing Pokemon would draw it off, often accumulating a large pack of them, before returning to their side, unaccompanied.

Gita sat comfortably on his shoulder, occasionally bending her head to ruffle through her feathers. Luke released Zavala, and the little Charcadet stepped loyally at his side, head on the swivel, taking everything in with wide, childlike eyes.

As they made for their intended target, Luke paid attention to the crumbled walls of the city around them. They would, occasionally, be strewn with graffiti, done in a wobbly, panicked way, as though whoever had done the art had been on the verge of losing nerve and running away at any point. A great dark shape, triangular and sharp and colored in with rapid, terrified squiggles, was the purveying theme overall.

“How many times have you been here?” he asked Ms. Sato, continuing to examine the drawings as they walked. “And why do you keep coming back?”

Undead?[break][break]

When Julien agreed to investigate the supernatural events plaguing Hoenn, fictional movie monsters were nowhere near the list of possibilities. Granted, neither had been aliens from another universe — or multiple universes, for that matter.[break][break]

But still, undead seemed ludicrous.[break][break]

It was not until Nomi's oddly-lit Sylveon cast a bright light upon the approaching swarm did Julien realize just how badly he had underestimated Hoenn's perils.[break][break]

Stunned speechless, he followed Luke and Nomi through the city's sprawling streets. Her Pokémon led the groups of aliens — Megalopolans, the woman had called them — away, while Lucien's Delphox took care of any stragglers who got too close to their group with well-placed FIRE BLASTS.[break][break]

"What are these depictions?" Julien murmured as they passed yet another etching showing shapes and figures he did not recognize.

"Only once," Nomi calmly answered Lukan. "This is my second time here."[break][break]
She was accustomed to the various oddities found in rifts such as this, however. The Border, the Ultra Deep Sea, she'd been to several of the strange places over the past six months: all of them had involved otherworldly entities and various never-before-seen phenomena.[break][break]
And all of them had been dangerous.[break][break]
Valerian and the Delphox made quick work of the zombie hoard, eventually pushing them back enough to allow Nomi a few precious minutes to stop and observe the etchings Julien had called to her attention. She gazed up at one of the walls, halting in front of it with little pretense, assuming the men would not continue without her.[break][break]
A terrible creature, all angles and sharp edges, seemed to be attacking a city. The city they were currently in? That was logical. Nomi narrowed her eyes, moving closer. Idly, she laid a hand upon the embedded mural, as if touching it might awaken some new understanding in her. She closed her eyes, focusing. Something about the depiction was familiar - like she'd seen it before. Her brain itched, memories swirling, trying their very best to coalesce into something useful.[break][break]
Her eyes snapped open.[break][break]
"The Black Knight," she murmured. "Necrozma." She glanced at Julien. "They are depictions of the past, of what happened here. Lesser Megalopolis was once a thriving city, like Slateport or Ever Grande. Until it was destroyed, the ruins of this dark realm all that remain of it."[break][break]
Valerian growled a waring, having returned from driving off yet another group of undead Megalopolians. Nomi nodded, then began hurrying away from the wall, back on the path towards their original destination.[break][break]
"I can explain more once we're securely inside, if you wish."

Nomi’s admission that this was only her second foray into this strange hellscape earned her a reluctant if approving, hum. “Well. My compliments to how prepared you are, as you seem a veritable expert.” Maybe it wasn’t that she was so good. Maybe it was just how completely out of his depth he seemed. But he was hiding it well… he hoped.

He watched Nomi with an unhidden expression of curiosity as she examined the grafitti, eyes shut in thought.

“Necrozma,” he repeated, as though tasting the word. “Such destruction… are--,”
[break][break]
His question was cut off as the signal tower gave another bright flare, and the shadows around them began to writhe with the undead. Nomi voiced that there would be time to answer questions when safe inside, and Luke nodded, swinging an arm round to herd both the young woman and the Kalosian towards their assumed location of safety, his fatherly instinct to protect emerging. Julien's face darkened as understanding settled in his bones. This city, this Lesser Megalopolis, had suffered the fate that would have befallen Galar had Necrozma not departed before it could complete its task.[break][break]

The Galarians could rebuild — indeed, reconstruction efforts had already begun — but these Megalopolans could not. They had been wiped out, it seemed, the remains of their population reduced to mindless, mad beasts.[break][break]

The sound of an approaching horde brought Julien back to the present. He nodded at Nomi and began to follow her again. "I was present at Galar. I saw with my own eyes what Necrozma can do to a city."[break][break]

He glanced back over his shoulder as Luke covered their rear, if only to ensure that the other man was not going to join their pursuers' fate. Though Julien did not know Luke, it would be a huge PR mess if he did not return safely with them to their world.

"I was there too when - " Nomi began to say, but stopped herself. No, wait, she'd never been to Galar. She'd just read about what had happened there. Right? An odd sense of vertigo seemed to take hold of her, and her temple began to throb with a sudden pounding headache. She shook her head as if to clear it, then hurried forward to test the door to the building they'd just arrived at.[break][break]
It was unlocked, swinging open with a whine. She waved the men inside just as Valerian sent his last plume of MYSTICAL FIRE at the nearest hoard, hoping they would follow after her. Once she and Valerian were secure, Nomi immediately turned to look for objects they could use to bar the door with once everyone was inside.[break][break]
"That desk looks sturdy," she remarked. "We can push it in front of the door."[break][break]
The building was indeed some sort of abandoned library. The desk in question seemed to be a reception desk, for checking out books. Shelves lined the walls, mostly bare save for the occasional frayed book. What used to be a functioning elevator could be seen across the chamber, which meant there was likely also a stairwell.[break][break]
Nomi released an Unown-A. "Search the building for undead," she commanded of it. "We need to know if it's safe to stay here."[break][break]
It bobbed up and down in the air, then floated away into the darkness.[break][break]

Inside the building, Julien shoved the desk in front of the door, hoping it would hold against a horde of undead. Then he followed Nomi through the main chamber they had entered, staring with wonder at how similar it looked to a regular library despite maintaining a semblance of alienness.[break][break]

While she released an Unown to search for danger, Julien and his Delphox moved to a different part of the room. Several doors were open or destroyed; beyond their frames lay only darkness.[break][break]

"Alethius, attack anything hostile," Julien reminded his Pokémon as he took out his phone and turned on its flashlight.[break][break]

Stepping into one such side chamber, Julien pointed the light at the broken furniture scattered over the floor. For a moment, all was still.[break][break]

Then something lunged at him from the shadows. Instinctively, he yelped and scrambled back through the door. Alethius stepped forward to defend him, attacking the creature — another undead! — with PSYCHIC. The sharp-fanged Megalopolan staggered but was not deterred.[break][break]

"Miss Sato! There's one over here!" Julien shouted as he regained his composure.

Hearing Julien's cry, Nomi quickly rushed over to him, Valerian following at her heels. The undead Megalopolian seemed unphased by the efforts of Julien's Delphox, who had opted for psychic over fire; Nomi had seen such resilience from them before, especially when faced with attacks meant to injure a mind that wasn't actually there anymore.[break][break]
"Psychic attacks don't seem to do much," Nomi explained. "The physical elements - such as fire or electricity - seem to be the way to go, in my experience."[break][break]
Nomi wasn't one to shy away from giving a quick lesson even in the face of danger. Scientific knowledge was meant to be shared, after all.[break][break]
Valerian opened his mouth in order to conjure another blast of MYSTICAL FIRE but Nomi stopped him, continuing to step back as the zombie advanced on them. "Fire could put the structural integrity of this building at risk," she cautioned. Taking out a Pokeball, she released Ash. The Ampharos bellowed, excited to join the fray.[break][break]
"We need to ensure every potential threat inside of this place is neutralized, if we're going to hide here for a bit," she continued. "So we'll need a lot of power."[break][break]
Activating the MEGA ACCESSORY on her wrist, Ash began to glow. He grew in size, a majestic white mane billowing out from behind him. Just as the undead Megalopolian reached him, he crackled with electric energy, sending a wave of THUNDER at it. With the strenght of his Mega-Evolved form powering him, Ash's THUNDER didn't just fry the zombie in front of them, it travelled up through the ceiling, surging through the entire building. With a sudden flash, all of the old, defunct machinery seemed to burst momentarily to life, only to die again as soon as the attack had passed.[break][break]
Everything grew quiet, Nomi's hair full of static and her skin tingling from the lingering after-effect of so much electricity. Then Alpha blipped back into existence next to her, the Unown-A bobbing up and down in the pattern she'd taught it to use for "all clear."[break][break]
"We should be safe now," she said to Julien, a tired smile on her face.

Mega evolution was one of the phenomena unique to Hoenn, whispered as rare rumors in other regions. But compared to other incidents such as the meteoroid and its sudden vanishing, aliens invading, and rifts opening up to other worlds, mega evolution seemed minor in comparison.[break][break]

Julien was wrong, of course. Witnessing it firsthand, he stared in awe at the powerful display of Nomi's Ampharos. Even his physical features changed.[break][break]

"Incredible," he breathed, his hair still standing on end thanks to the lingering electricity. "You'll have to explain how that works to me."[break][break]

While they attempted to spend the night, of course.[break][break]

As the aftereffects of the electric attack faded away, Julien began the search for objects to use as makeshift beds. They had brought canned food and an electric grill for cooking their meals, but nothing to use for sleep.[break][break]

It was a city, after all. Surely there were blankets around.[break][break]
