As the Elite Ranger drew near, Achilles yawned and blinked slowly, opening his piercing blue eyes to stare her down in appraisal. Eddie, having grown increasingly familiar with some of the Gouging Fire's more troublesome habits, gave the paradox Pokemon a light nudge with his foot, [break][break]

“Hey, be nice.” [break][break]

Achilles huffed as he rose to his feet. Eddie was pretty sure that his words had fallen on deaf ears. So he just shrugged, turning back to Yuina with a bright smile as though he weren't standing next to a creature that could rip him to shreds, [break][break]

“Thanks again for meeting me out here! Hope the journey wasn't too rough.” [break][break]

He paused, rubbing his chin, [break][break]

“Oh! And this is Achilles; he's the paradox 'mon I toldja about!” [break][break]

The Gouging Fire didn't voice any acknowledgment of his trainer's introduction. Instead, his reptilian eyes drew into narrow slits, and he sniffed the air as he cautiously eyed Yuina. Perhaps he knew that she was in the company of his primordial rivals, though Achilles seemed more possessed of apprehensive curiosity than predatory vigor. Perhaps he also knew that he was outnumbered three-to-one.

Eddie's instincts had been right on the money; as they rode off along the river, a trio of lion-esque Pokemon descended upon them, [break][break]

“Delilah, watch out!” [break][break]

While they had been fortunate to mostly escape the onslaught with their hides intact, it was with some dismay that Eddie realized that they had lost some of their precious cargo. Did he even have the means to fix the damaged crate? Eddie peered back over his shoulder and watched the battered box bounce precariously as they trailed along the water's edge. Shit, he had to do something, didn't he? Or else he'd risk losing all of the goods he was supposed to be carrying, and would thus render all of these efforts wasted. [break][break]

He stopped Delilah long enough to scramble off of her and assess the damage. He didn't have much in the way of materials to fix this, did he? Nor could Delilah really help in fixing the splintered corner of the box and the hole that threatened to lose him the rest of his shipment. Eddie frowned, tracing his fingers around the busted corner, when he was suddenly struck by an idea. [break][break]

Eddie hastily unbuttoned his shirt and crammed the fabric into the exposed opening of the box, balling up the fabric to make sure it was snugly secure in the newly-created opening. In a way, it was a little like installing a sheet of fiberglass insulation back when he used to work construction; as long as the material was fitted properly and would sit in the opening tightly enough, it wouldn't be going anywhere. [break][break]

Unsure how well his makeshift repair would hold up, Eddie hastily climbed back onto the Mudsdale's back and sped off toward Sector 5. Though the muck would slow down lesser steeds, the steadfast Delilah had enough STAMINA to force her way through the quagmire that waited for them.

This particular human has bested you in combat, but strangely, has not since made any attempts at destroying you for good, nor has he attempted to strengthen himself by absorbing your energy. Perhaps it is simply because he lacks the proboscis that the rest of your kin possesses to achieve such a task. Perhaps it is because he has other plans for you. [break][break]

And perhaps this outing is a part of those plans. He prattled on in his strange tongue as you entered this oddly curated bit of wilderness, and though you didn't exactly understand the words that he spoke, his body language clearly voiced his intent. Something was coming. [break][break]

Eddie had become aware that something was shifting in the dynamic of the prison when he stared into the Wellspring mask one last time and was confronted by a vision far removed from his own desires. A sprawling city of light, more luminous than the landscape of his dreams. Masks now fixed upon the towering architecture, thrumming with power that practically crackled through the air like static electricity. The dreamer themself, a Megalopolan who had no wish for their own desires to be prodded into. When he had been shunted from that dream, dizzy and disoriented, Eddie wasn't quite sure what to make of it, except, perhaps, that some unfathomable unknown was looming on the horizon. [break][break]

When he woke up the next day with tears pooled in the corners of his eyes, Eddie felt not the looming despair that had so often threatened to destroy him, but something unexpectedly defiant. Hope. He couldn't quite place where his newfound optimism came from, but it made the work all the easier as he took to his daily rock-bashing. Maybe this was the thing that the strange vision had been a portent of? [break][break]

Perhaps his fellow inmates of the Weakling Ward had felt it too, because as the platform lowered and a strange cry rang out through the prison, all hell broke loose. [break][break]

Some prisoners took up arms, striking back against the warden and their guards. Others still fled toward the platform; that, it seemed, was their ticket to freedom, [break][break]

“C'mon, Beau; we're getting the fuck outta here!” [break][break]

Without thinking, Eddie grabbed his cellmate's hand and began to dash towards the platform as fast as his legs could carry him. In his periphery, a guard rushed forward to tackle the fleeing inmates; before he could think to maneuver away, the TOXIC CHAIN that had long been a source of pain and frustration for Eddie whipped forward to strike at the Megalopolan before they could get too close, cracking like a whip. [break][break]

Eddie couldn't help but grin at this newfound victory as they drew ever closer to the platform. These fuckers were never going to lay a hand on him or those that he loved ever again. [break][break]

Wasting food was damn near criminal as far as Eddie was concerned. He frowned as he inspected the long-abandoned kitchen, but his mood turned for the better at the mention of the bougie cutlery. Heck yeah, some extra cash would be awesome! [break][break]

Although, speaking of bougie, the view was something incredible to behold. This was like something out of one of those period dramas that bored him to tears, but at least it was all gorgeous to look at. Though then that did beg the question of whether or not the lava was here when this entire kingdom was built; maybe it was, because then how else would you explain all of the lava flow-altering mechanisms? But why the hell would anyone build their giant, luxurious castle in the middle of a friggin' volcano? Maybe it was just a rich people thing; Eddie always struggled to empathize with the upper crust of society. [break][break]

But he was getting side-tracked again; it was time to get moving! After some thought, Eddie selected the option to HEAD UP THE STAIRS IN THE EASTERN HALLWAY. Going downstairs would definitely be too hazardous with Shalin's current condition, and considering she had taken damage the last time she used the Foresight Lens, this option at least seemed like the safest one at first glance.

For just a moment, the sands abated. Eddie lifted the arm shielding his face just in time for a tumbling blur of blue and yellow feathers to come crash-landing against him. On the bright side, there was no one around to hear his startled shriek of surprise or see his flustered flailing, but after a moment of panic, Eddie looked down to see what exactly had assailed him. [break][break]

In his lap now sat a battered and weary Archen, using it's little hands to cling to the front of his shirt, looking just as disoriented as Eddie felt. The trainer frowned, looking down at the little prehistoric bird as it trembled against him, [break][break]

“Ya'lright, little man?” he querried soothingly, tilting his head down to inspect the wayward Pokemon. [break][break]

The Archen was only able to crow a weak, raspy reply. Eddie frowned; maybe the poor thing had gotten swept up in the storm, [break][break]

“C'mon buddy, we'll get ya patched up. Just hold on tight, okay?” [break][break]

If the Pokemon had heard Eddie, the creature didn't acknowledge it as they rode off across the desert with renewed purpose. Maybe they could still make some decent time while the winds died down.

The days that followed dragged into a frightening but repetitive blur. [break][break]

Eddie found that it was always the same every 'day'; wake up, eat, laugh until he felt like he was going to throw up (or be laughed at, which stung, but was still more bearable than the cruel laughter that clawed its way out of his throat when it was someone else on the chopping block). Work, sticking close to Beau whether they were bashing rocks or shoveling slop with their hands, shower, and laugh some more before scarfing down another handful of disgusting peach-flavored mochi. The monotony was only interrupted when their warden's ire was occasionally directed toward him, or when Eddie found himself perilously close to having his head caved in by that little ogre in the pit. [break][break]

By the time some real change worked its way into his routine, Eddie wasn't sure if only one full day had passed or if it had been five, but he was surprised to find that during one particular stretch, his ward had been allowed to visit that fabled Chamber of Desires rather than slave away in the dark, hellish trench below. The ride there had been disorienting, to say the least, but hey, it sure as shit beat getting his teeth punched out by a creature a third of his height. [break][break]

The Wellspring Mask definitely gave him the creeps, though, but what choice did he have but to stare into its brilliant eyes and see whatever it had to offer him? Surely it couldn't be any worse than any of the other terrible things he'd seen here so far, but Eddie opted not to press his luck by engaging in any sort of speculation, as keenly aware as he was of the infinite cruelty of their captors.[break][break]

When his turn came, Eddie did as he was instructed; he looked into the mask without resisting, spellbound by fear as its visions shimmered into life. [break] [break]

But as it turned out, it was quite silly for him to have been so afraid. The Mask had many things to show him, and they were all so wonderful. [break][break]

Eddie was back at his childhood home in Cascarrafa, seated at the end of a long dining table that was clad in the colorful patchwork tablecloth that his family reserved for special occasions. The sun's light, rich with the hazy orange tones of late afternoon, bathed the room in its warm glow, and everyone was here. [break][break]

Suddenly, Shalin Nariya piped up from a spot next to him, chiming in with her own contribution to the tale, and Yuina Higashi laughed, soft and airy, when one of Eddie's brothers nearly choked on his mouthful of food at the sheer absurdity of whatever the Ranger Captain had to add. But then Eddie's gaze shifted to the spot on his immediate right, and his heart swelled with such joy he was sure it would burst. [break][break]

A hand was held gently by his own, and the warm sunlight glinted off of the silver wedding band and twinkled like a little star. It's bearer was... well, Eddie couldn't quite get a good look at him, but he knew that the man loved him, because in a moment of ecstatic realization, Eddie realized that he wore a matching ring on his own left hand. Eddie's eyes followed his partner's hand, up the arm, and squinted as he tried to discern his features that shifted, dream-like, in a miasmatic haze. Eddie thought, for a moment, that he recognized the striking, angular features of MATIAS SILPH , but no, that wasn't quite right. Maybe he saw the luminous and easy smile of ollie morales ? Not exactly. He looked into his lover's light, almost sparkling eyes, and Eddie was sure that it was on the tip of his tongue –

But before he could make that puzzling connection, his time within the vision had ended. Maybe Eddie should have been more displeased to have been torn from such a pleasant dream, but all he could do was smile blissfully as he turned to glance back at the bright eyes of the cellmate that was waiting for his own turn, [break][break]

Eddie staggered away like a drunkard with a wide and lazy grin. Maybe this place wasn't so bad after all. [break][break]

In Hoenn, there was always work to be done, and Eddie was often glad for it. [break][break]

The recent eruption at Mt. Chimney had caused some structural damage to the towns of Lavaridge and Fallarbor, but not on the cataclysmic scale that Eddie had first feared when he heard of what had transpired. It was kind of a miracle, really, but that didn't mean that those communities had escaped the mountain's wrath entirely unscathed. The fact that Eddie was even here right now, brushing off coal-black soot that fell like grimy flakes of snow, was a testament to that. [break][break]

In the wake of the region's most recent natural disaster, Eddie had been dispatched alongside other recently recruited military personnel to partake in “humanitarian assistance exercises,” half-intended to supplement their existing training, and half-intended to provide some sorely needed relief to the locals. On this day in particular, Eddie's squad would be joined by a group of Rangers as they worked to reestablish some infrastructure and deal with any agitated wild Pokemon displaced by the eruption. [break][break]

Distantly, Eddie caught the sound of someone barking orders. Rangers and recruits were being paired off to share their expertise as they worked, and Eddie waited for his name to be called, a little overeager and a little sheepish as the anticipation took hold. When it was finally his turn to meet his coworker for the day, Eddie beamed, bright and boyish with joyful recognition, [break][break]

Eddie was sure he'd be getting an earful from his commanding officer if they heard that delighted ease in his voice, but for the time being, he decided that that would be a problem for future-Eddie to contend with.

If it wasn't one thing, it was another. Eddie would've been a lot happier about getting the key if it didn't seem to take some sort of toll on Shalin's health. But there wasn't a damn thing he could do about it now, was there? All of his healing had been spent, so maybe this was just some sort of “ticking clock” mechanic meant to keep him from forever roaming about these halls. [break][break]

If that was the case, then they had to get a move on to make whatever progress they could before that inevitable GAME OVER. Eddie selected the option to OPEN THE LOCKED DOOR AT THE WEST END OF THE HALLWAY; that had to be the path forward, right?
