Alright, it was official; Eddie had made a terrible mistake. [break][break]

He shielded his eyes with an arm as the wind picked up and carried the sand at his feet into the air in violent, whirling currents. He should've known better than to cut through the desert north of Mauville, but it was so much quicker than heading west and working his way through the Jagged Pass. And besides, he had assumed that the short expanse of sand and jagged rock couldn't have been that different from the Asado Desert just to the west of his own home in Paldea, and that was a trek he had made many times in his youth. [break][break]

But oh boy, had he been proven wrong. Eddie was no stranger to the discomfort brought by the biting sands and dry heat of a place like this, but the wind was another matter entirely. Maybe the high canyons of the Asado Desert shielded it from the angry northern winds that scraped across the stretch of land he was desperately trying to cross now. Maybe the desert of Route 111 was just uniquely strange and terrible because it was in Hoenn, and this region had some odd way of making even the most mundane places and things remarkable. [break][break]

On the bright side, Delilah didn't seem affected by the fearsome gales and coarse sand in the slightest. Maybe if Eddie just kept his head down and the Mudsdale kept moving, they'd be able to make it to Fallarbor before nightfall.

Alright, so maybe Eddie wasn't completely unflappable just yet. Even if his face didn't become quite as red as it had just a little while ago, the tips of his ears still burned a bright pink as he settled in with Matias for their meal. [break][break]

But it was no longer fueled by uncomfortable shame or uneasy wariness of whatever Matias' intentions were. It was just a little fun, plain and simple, and Eddie didn't mind being the butt of a harmless joke shared in this private world of theirs. It was as sweet and simple as the saccharine vanilla filling of the doughnut he bit into (which subsequently spilled onto his fingers and smudged his cheek, because the universe was just as determined to poke fun at Eddie as Matias was). It was as easy as the laughter they shared, and as warm as the sun set high in the sky, shining on them with a beneficence Eddie imagined was just for them. [break][break]

And for a moment, Eddie wondered if this was what it must have been like to be the ill-fated Hyacinth, unaware of his doom as he basked in the presence of the lover he courted not for their divinity, but for their company. Maybe he was just letting his own imagination run away with him, or maybe this was closer to the truth than the old stories ever got. [break][break]

Either way, Eddie decided that he didn't mind taking a discus to the head himself for the chance at another comfortable outing with his friend.

There was some tightly wound tension in Beau's short replies that cut Eddie to his core. Well of course the poor kid would be stressed out of his mind, given what they'd been through, but Eddie was overwhelmed by both the desire to fix it and his inability to find any actionable way to do so. He frowned behind his mask, both at that nagging feeling and at the question now posed to him, [break][break]

“'Cause they're assholes?”[break][break]

The motivations of the Megalopolans were a total mystery to him. He'd seen news reports about them, sure, warning citizens of Hoenn to report any such individuals to the authorities if spotted. Eddie had also heard harrowing tales of their cannibalism but he had thought them to be overblown until now. Maybe they were just herding together a select group of humans like cattle, forcing them to slave away until they were to be turned into food. Maybe it had something to do with the strange toxic chains that bound them, ones he had seen time and time again over the past month in those strange outbreaks that had swept across the region. But Eddie didn't know anything for sure, except for the fact that he lacked the knowledge and context to properly discern their intentions, but he could at least hazard a guess, [break][break]

“Or 'cause they're doped up on that weird mochi.” [break][break]

Mochi that they had both consumed several helpings of, he now realized. Before Eddie could let the realization tilt him into a fit of panic, he paused, the hand at his side balling into a tight fist. Sitting here and spinning his wheels over shit he couldn't control or do anything about wasn't going to get him anywhere, and he certainly wasn't going to give Beau any more reason to be upset. The other man had given him some reprieve when he sorely needed it; maybe Eddie could find a way to do the same, [break][break]

“Hey, ya got any plans for when we bust outta here?” [break][break]

Because it had to be a 'when' and not an 'if', [break][break]

“A buddy'a mine's got a little place in Dewford he told me I could crash at. Was thinkin' of takin' him up on that an' just bummin' around on the beach for a while. Maybe go swimmin', fire up the barbecue, do some day drinkin'; yanno, that sorta thing.” [break][break]

If he couldn't physically take Beau from this terrible place, maybe he could take him out of here mentally, at least for a little while.

Eddie was relieved to see Beau was just fine, as far as he could tell, and already moving towards the next platform. He was caught a little off-guard when the younger man looked back at him over his shoulder, but Eddie was catapulted quickly from surprise to elation at the thought of good food shared with excellent company, [break][break]

“Hell yeah!” he beamed back, happy as could be. Eddie's stomach growled with similar eagerness, “Ya think they got unagi there? I'd kill for some'a that right about now.” [break][break]

Entrances and exits to the Border really did seem to come and go as they pleased, and thankfully, the fickle nature of this place worked in the men's favor as a whirling portal appeared on the far side of the next platform they came across. Eddie didn't think he could smile any wider if he tried; for all of his moping not long ago, he found he was quite looking forward to getting out of here after all. [break][break]

Eddie wracked his brain to try and dredge up some of that knowledge he'd mostly forgotten those months ago, [break][break]

“I know marigolds've got all kinds'a meanings, as it turns out,” he began. Eddie smiled when he remembered the arrangement he'd received as a gift from one of his VCT opponents, “Sometimes they're for passion or energy, or other good stuff like that.” [break][break]

He paused, scratching the back of his head in contemplation, [break][break]

“Oh! Or sometimes they're for like grief and rememberin' loved ones that've passed on; apparently it's got somethin' ta do with life and death and resurrection, or somethin' like that. And then there's hyacinths; now those are my favorite- !” [break][break]

Wait, hyacinths? Flowers? Floral arrangements? Eddie stopped abruptly, haunted by a sudden realization; he had to go get flowers! And food! He'd totally forgotten that he had a friend to meet with today! [break][break]

Eddie suddenly turned back to Elise, eyes wide with panic, [break][break]

“Crap! I just realized there's somewhere I gotta be!” [break][break]

He dashed past her, scooping up Vash under one arm as the Electric-type just barely darted out of the Chespin's reach, and Eddie spun back on his heel to offer the ambassador an apologetic wave, [break][break]

“Sorry, I gotta run! We should do this again sometime!” [break][break]

With that, Eddie tore off through the park with the Pawmot tucked under his arm like a football, back in the direction of his home as quickly as possible. Maybe if he got a hold of his Flygon, he'd be able to make it to his destination with some time to spare. Either way, he hoped that Elise would forgive him for his abrupt departure.

Though the Cyclizar's call had gone almost unnoticed by the less than observant Eddie, he would have been blind to not have seen the crackling electricity that dogged them in their departure. Before he could react, though, the SHOCK WAVE dissolved into little more than static against the Mudsdale's hide. Eddie cheered silently and gave Delilah a congratulatory pat to her flank; the horse huffed dismissively and shook her head from side to side in response. Modest and down to earth; maybe that was just a Ground-type thing. [break][break]

Eddie feared that his fortunes were turning for the worse as he surveyed the expanse of rolling hills that made up Sector 1, and dismally realized that for what little there was to hide their approach, he might as well have been charging up the path with a target painted on his back. The footprints beneath rider and Pokemon went unnoticed as they trekked along, and Eddie only vaguely registered the uneven shapes they left in the dirt as he neared the Raichu lying on the ground. He frowned, puzzling over the sight of the Pokemon; it was a damn shame he didn't have any way to lend aid, Eddie thought, though maybe this was just another part of the test. Perhaps it was a distraction, or some sort of bait for a trap that would be sprung if he lingered too long. So, linger he did not, and Eddie steered the reins away and assessed his next course of action. [break][break]

The bridge was just asking for trouble, as far as he was concerned. It was too narrow and too isolated for it to be anything other than a lure to be funneled into. Eddie wasn't sure what other Pokemon the Gym Leader had lying in wait, but there were sure to be plenty of them; if he got boxed in on the structure, they were as good as done for. [break][break]

With some resignation, Eddie tugged on the reins and guided Delilah to follow the water's edge, hoping to find some other way to pass through to the next area. Perhaps this would be a terrible waste of time, or perhaps he'd find a more ideal spot to cross. Either way, he had to stay on the move; Eddie was suddenly struck by the feeling that he was being closely watched.

“Hey, for what it's worth, ya got a leg up on me; I'm still dumb as shit,” Eddie acknowledged with a shrug of his shoulders. [break][break]

But maybe there was some common ground to be found here after all, Eddie realized with some amazement, because hadn't he thought the same, in his own small way? Not that his own silly intrapersonal issues compared, but still, Eddie realized that he had long fostered his own little bit of distrust when it came to the most private aspects of his own life, afraid of the condemnation of others. No matter how often he wore his heart on his sleeve, Eddie was always fearful of that bit of judgment, and still guarded some parts of himself with a terrified vigilance. It was so easy to just dodge and obfuscate and flee rather than to face what could have proved to be his worst fears realized. [break][break]

When he had finally opened up, what had he been met with? Soft laughter and fondness. Eddie could have laughed himself in that moment for how absurd any of his ill-founded anxieties felt when he returned Matias' gaze, [break][break]

“Now you're just teasin' me.” [break][break]

It was so easy to reply to that jest in kind now, with a new playfulness lacing his voice and a sly wink to seal the deal. Eddie hadn't felt this well and truly unguarded in years, [break][break]

“You ready to eat?” he offered, gently jostling the box still tucked under his arm, “Few things worse than a stale donut.”

“Ain't nothin' to it!” [break][break]

Eddie grinned, equal parts happy and cocky at that gregarious little bit of contact and Beau's impressed cry. Fuck yeah, everything worked out just the way he drew it up, and Eddie left Beau to his own capture as he turned to scoop up the Poke Ball housing his newest addition to the team. When the younger man turned back with his own new friend, proudly bearing a smile that Eddie was sure could outshine the sun, something began to take hold of him as Beau's words sparked some bittersweet realization. [break][break]

It probably was time to go, wasn't it? They had made decent progress out here, scouting the places they could and capturing their new prizes, but Eddie felt strangely reluctant to depart from the Border. [break][break]

What was there to even go back to, anyway? Their findings would be recorded, they'd be sent on their way, and that would be the end of it. No more perilous but fun little adventures together, no more comfortable and solid companionship. There was just a mostly empty apartment waiting for Eddie back in Rustboro, with only a few sparse additions to the place since he had moved to Hoenn in January. Eddie would go back to being just some faceless unknown trudging through his day-to-day, alone and adrift as he ever was back in Cascarrafa. It would be so easy to just stay here, he thought, suddenly tired as he turned over the Poke Ball in his hands. No one from the outside would even know he was gone, and he could just remain to luxuriate in this little bit of happiness until the end of time. [break][break]

… But that wasn't quite right either, was it? Eddie did have friends on the other side he had to get back to, and there was so much more waiting for him there; wild rides with Shalin Nariya, history lessons with Yuina Higashi, treks through the wilderness with ollie morales, and quiet moments of understanding with MATIAS SILPH. Eddie couldn't just throw that all away on some sad little whim. And besides, perhaps the future had more in store for him and one of his newest friends, too, [break][break]

“Yep, looks like it's time ta get the hell outta Dodge,” Eddie finally replied as he smiled back, feeling lighter than he had since they first arrived in this extra-dimensional space, “And we better make it quick; I think this place is startin' to get to me.” [break][break]

Eddie paused and watched Beau for a moment, and wondered briefly if he felt that terrible rush of melancholy, too. Beau was strong and kind, so it was doubtless that he had plenty of people that loved him back home and would miss him if he was gone. Surely he wouldn't have any reason to throw that all away and remain here as Eddie had been nearly tempted to. [break][break]

Eddie felt a pang of guilt at the way Beau started against him and the concern that undercut his reply. The last thing he wanted to do was put more undue stress on the poor guy, [break][break]

“Yeah, yeah I'm fine. Sorry, just havin' a hard time sleepin'.” [break][break]

And now that he'd gone and disturbed his cellmate, where the hell did Eddie go from here? The last thing he wanted to discuss were the horrific circumstances they had found themselves in, even if this could prove to be an excellent moment to come up with an escape plan. On the other hand, there was a tension about the younger man that Eddie couldn't ignore, either. [break][break]

God, wasn't he just a scumbag? He'd been so distracted by something as trivial as their sleeping arrangements that he hadn't considered how the day's events must have been affecting his friend, [break][break]

“You holdin' up okay?” [break][break]

Eddie paused. It was kind of a dumb question, given the incredibly dire situation they'd found themselves in. But he was determined to be a friend to Beau and not the useless sack of shit Eddie had proven himself to be up until now, [break][break]

“I'm here for ya, no matter what these fuckers throw at us. You need anythin' from me, you just say the word, alright?” [break][break]

Staunch and sincere, as Eddie always was. Even outside of what friendship he shared with Beau, he owed the man a debt that he was determined to repay.

Hell no indeed; Eddie's stubbornness reared it's ugly head in reply, [break][break]

“The hell kinda logic is that? Seriously, man, you take the cot,” he insisted firmly, following Beau's lead and tossing his own pants into their growing pile of wet clothes, “And I ain't takin' no for an answer.” [break][break]

But this back and forth was going to be rather pointless, wasn't it? Eddie didn't fume, exactly, as he slipped into his clean new clothes, but this was a little hill he was determined to die on. It wasn't like he had much other agency in this place, [break][break]

“Fuck, this ain't gettin' us anywhere.” [break][break]

Eddie sighed with impatient frustration as he looked back to the cot. Suddenly, a thought occurred to him, [break][break]

“Here's an idea; how 'bout we just try ta share the cot instead of spendin' the rest of the night bickerin' about it?” [break][break]

Despite it's narrow size, the two of them could probably squeeze their way onto it if they laid on their sides. It was an ingenious solution, or so Eddie told himself in his bullheaded resolve as he moved to the bed. Positioning himself just so, with his back to the wall and facing out to the bars of the cell and ward beyond (because like hell was he going to keep his back turned to whatever freaky shit was waiting for them out there), Eddie was surprised to find that there was, in fact, just enough room for Beau to do the same. [break][break]

Eddie watched Beau expectantly, propping his head up on one hand and letting the other arm drape across his side, [break][break]

“And if I catch you tryin' to sleep on that gross-ass floor, I'm haulin' yer ass back up here myself.” [break][break]

And so, with some cajoling and strong-arming, the two cellmates would go on to share the cot for the evening. [break][break]

Eddie was certain that he'd fallen asleep, but maybe instead those cruel jailers had teleported him somewhere outside of his cell. He awoke in an unfamiliar cityscape of bright lights and shimmering neon, and couldn't help but be dazzled by it's bright fluorescence as he rose to his feet. So awed was he by the metropolis of light and sound that he hadn't even noticed his mask was gone for the first time in what felt like a lifetime, [break][break]

“What the- ?”[break][break]

This was probably a dream after all, Eddie realized, because he couldn't fathom any context in which their captors would be kind enough to remove their bindings. He looked around, eyes straining against the brilliant artificial light that surrounded him, and scoured his immediate vicinity for anything of interest.
