Beau bellowed victoriously as the Poochyena was sent flying off of his hide. As the dog Pokemon rose to his feet, the bull snorted and stamped, getting himself WORKED UP and hoping to intimidate Kilo in the process. Then with another lowing cry of fury, the bull charged back into the fray, hoping to trample the pup underneath his hooves with a vicious series of DOUBLE KICKS,[break][break]

“Maybe so, but I'll have you know this ain't my first rodeo!” [break][break]

Alright, that one was pretty weak. Eddie was also starting to hope that things would wrap up before too much longer, because trying to monitor his Tauros and keep the wordplay up was starting to make his head hurt. [break][break]

He'd only been in the area by happenstance, having traveled from Rustboro via the Rusturf Tunnel. However, the moment that Eddie had caught wind of the rampaging Cyclizars, he just had to go check it out for himself. [break][break]

What he saw reminded him fondly of home. The veritable stampede of Cyclizars running and bounding over each other was a sight to behold as they deftly attempted to avoid collision with each other and the myriad trainers that had showed up to try their hand at catching one. He stayed off to the side as he watched the spectacle, fingers curling around an empty Pokeball in his pocket, biding his time. Eddie chuckled as he watched some of them bump into each other, spin out, and then scramble back onto their feet to keep up with the rest of the pack. It vaguely reminded him of a dinky old arcade back in Cascarrafa, and the untold hours and coins he'd lost on the old Daytona USA cabinet in the back. As one lizard wiped out in front of him, Eddie withdrew the Pokeball and aimed; here's hoping luck was on his side. [break][break]

The satisfaction of getting a couple of good hits in was quickly eroded by the sheer force of the Lucario's retaliation and the precision of his well-executed QUICK GUARD. It made sense that the two Fighting types were able to literally go toe-to-toe with one another and Beau was quickly becoming consumed by the heady bloodlust of a well fought brawl. That may have been where the bull faltered, allowing the Lucario to land some strikes while he was swept up in their whirlwind of shared CLOSE COMBAT. Eddie watched with bated breath; neither he nor Beau ever did anything with care or finesse. [break][break]

So Beau, though blinded by pain and fury, reverted to the one tactic he was all too familiar with. He began bucking and kicking like a RAGING BULL; he'd never be a master of precision, but he was well acquainted with the sheer brutality of overwhelming force. Maybe that would be enough to strike back at the Lucario. [break][break]

It had been hell trying to make it to the shrine. Navigating through the falls was perilous, between the craggy walls he had to climb and the rushing currents of water he had to cross. But it was apparently a Hoennian tradition to visit this most hallowed site, and Eddie was eager to learn about a new local custom. So when he finally reached the quaint, weathered shrine guarded by the odd effigy, all he could do was beam with pride. He examined the cord used to ring the bell, and turned to the Lucario standing next to him, [break][break]

“You wanna do the honors, Batou?”[break][break]

He'd brought the Lucario along as something of a bonding exercise, having recently captured the Pokemon near his home. The Lucario, for his part, seemed a little surprised to have been presented with the opportunity. Eyes wide, the lupine Pokemon nodded, and reached a paw out to tug on the cord. The bell rung with a satisfying, clangorous tone, and Eddie slung an arm around his Pokemon's shoulders to pull him into an affectionate hug, [break][break]

“Atta boy! Now ya've got the dragon's blessing!” [break][break]

The Lucario gave a bark of apparent embarrassment, but Eddie didn't pay him much mind. They had survived the trek and made it to their destination. He was confident that the auspicious blessing of the shrine would offer them good luck for the new year, and the new chapter of his life ahead.

Eddie felt a surge of pride as Beau's attack landed and the Mismagius was sent gliding to the side with a wail. But one attack wouldn't be enough to win the battle; they were going to have to keep the pressure up if they wanted to win this, [break][break]

“Keep it up, Beau! You got 'em on the ropes!” Eddie cheered. [break][break]

It was then he heard the crackling static of the THUNDERBOLT being launched at his prized bull just as Beau began to cloak himself in a veil of water, drawing moisture from the atmosphere around them in an attempt to slam into the Mismagius with a full-body WAVE CRASH. He didn't have to be a genius to figure out that this could go very badly, [break][break]

“Watch out!” [break][break]

Eddie's stomach sank as he watched the THUNDERBOLT connect with Beau, the water veiling him evaporating as the heat of the electrical strike fizzled out the thin aquatic layer cloaking the Pokemon. In the resulting plume of steam, Eddie couldn't tell what kind of shape Beau was in, until he saw the black bull barreling out of the fog to collide with as much force as he could muster into the Mismagius, steam radiating off of his body as his AQUA CRASH finally connected. Eddie let out the breath he hadn't realized he been holding and whooped with joy. [break][break]

The Poochyena's attack proved to be more formidable than Eddie could have anticipated as Beau lowed in pain. The dog latched on and showed little sign of relinquishing it's hold. Beau, hurt and angry as all hell, began to buck and kick like a RAGING BULL, hoping to shake the Poochyena off and score a hit in the process. The little dog was in for the ride of it's life, [break][break]

“C'mon, cut me some slack. Tryin' to come up with all these puns can be pretty ruff.” [break][break]

Eddie punctuated his statement with a waggle of the eyebrows. [break][break]

If Eddie had a dollar for every time he'd found himself in a cavernous tunnel since moving to Hoenn, he'd have two dollars. It wasn't a lot, but it was weird that it had happened twice so far. [break][break]

This time he had come to regret his choice of apparel. Where the Rusturf Tunnel had proven to be cold and damp, the Fiery Path was really living up to it's namesake. Steam billowed from spots in the earth around him, leaving him sweltering underneath his thick fleece joggers. He had at least been able to take off the matching gray hoodie and sling it over his shoulder, but even the off-white tank top he was left with felt like too much fabric for the humid heat of the path. Eddie chugged some water from one of the bottles he brought with him and resisted the urge to just dump the rest over his head. The Mudbray at his side seemed unbothered by the heat and had begun to contentedly snack on a choice bit of loamy earth. At least she was having a good time.

The strange energies now cloaking the small dog Pokemon perplexed Eddie, but he didn't have much time to consider the bizarre draconic aura emanating from the Poochyena as Beau collided with his opponent head-on. Unstoppable force, meet immovable object. [break][break]

There was a flourish of exploding energy as the two Pokemon clashed and Beau was sent skidding back, but didn't appear to be outwardly harmed. The bull immediately charged back into the fray, head low and horns raised in an attempt to engage the Poochyena in CLOSE COMBAT, [break][break]

“Kilo's a good pup, but unfortunately for him -” Eddie punctuated his statement with a lackadaisical shrug of the shoulders, “Beau and I are a little bit of both.” [break][break]

He hoped that sounded as cool out loud as it did in his head. Eddie was mostly just happy to finally have an opponent that was indulging him. [break][break]

The Lucario was fast, much faster than Beau. Realizing this, and seeing the Lucario slide effortlessly to the side and aim an AURA SPHERE at the bull's flank, Eddie called out, [break][break]

“Beau!” he roared, desperate to get his Pokemon's attention, “Pivot, now!” [break][break]

Beau bellowed in acknowledgment and suddenly turned sharply. The momentum carried him into a drift, hooves skidding across the arena as he re-positioned himself to face the Lucario head on. He leapt forward with a sudden ferocity, head low and horns up, ready to engage the Lucario in CLOSE COMBAT.[break][break]

There's a cold intensity about the opposing man and his Pokemon that sends a chill through Eddie. Maybe it's just the fact that the Glalie kinda gives him the creeps, being little more than a floating, angry head. He watched as the Poochyena was released onto the field, and found himself caught a little off-guard. He wasn't expecting Kyle to bring a puppy to the tournament, but he was sure the champ had some tricks up his sleeve, [break][break]

With a sweeping flourish of the arm, Beau charged into the arena, water from the frigid air around him cloaking his hooves in an aquatic veil.
