The bravado he'd conjured during the previous matches was starting to wane as Eddie stepped into the arena. He'd lost twice so far, and while the battles themselves had been fun, he was itching to get a win under his belt. So when he saw his opponent, he stopped, took a deep breath, and puffed out his chest a little. Even if he didn't feel like a winner yet, he was gonna fake it til he made it, [break][break]

“Yo, I'm Eddie! Lookin' forward to battlin' ya!” he said in introduction with a toothy smile and a casual wave. The Tauros next to him offered a stomp and a snort in greeting as well.

his GLALIE offers no such greeting. beady eyes stare forward, locked onto the TAUROS in the same way a predator stalks prey. their matching composure remains cold despite the constant drizzle showering the city in THUNDURUS’ sporadic encounters.

There's a cold intensity about the opposing man and his Pokemon that sends a chill through Eddie. Maybe it's just the fact that the Glalie kinda gives him the creeps, being little more than a floating, angry head. Or maybe it's something about Fernando; he strikes Eddie as a man of calculated precision, a total opposite to Eddie's hot head and bleeding heart. It rattles him a little, but he steels himself as he calls back, [break][break]

“Alright, then let's get started!” [break][break]

Beau charges forward, head low, horns forward, throwing his whole body into his charging gallop as he zeroes in on the Glalie. The goal is to close the gap as quickly as possible and barrage the opposing Pokemon with a flurry of CLOSE COMBAT; the name of the game is 'shock and awe', but Eddie felt an uncharacteristic surge of trepidation seize him as he watched Beau charge into the fray. “BATTLE ROUTINE SET!”

the call of battle rouses his GLALIE into moving. such a vague command, one often considered open-ended by the unfamiliar, strike fear into much of hoenn. and those unaffected? they will learn in due time.

“execute!”

the charging TAUROS strikes with impunity. but there is no damage to be dealt here. for a PROTECT shields the pokemon in a translucent barrier. it holds strong, for a moment, before shattering into a myriad of shards. a glittery show the undermines the ICE SHARDS the pokemon is prepared to fire right after.

Eddie doesn't really register what Fernando commands to his Glalie, because his thoughts are more immediately preoccupied by Beau bouncing off the translucent barrier cloaking the opposing Pokemon and the way the shield disintegrates into a shower of glass-like sparkles. The spectacle does an effective job at concealing the follow-up barrage of ICE SHARDS that spear the bull's flank, causing the Pokemon to low in pain. [break][break]

Pain has always been a powerful motivator for Beau and Eddie both, though. It's part of the song and dance of battling, of struggling against overwhelming odds to overcome them. Though battered from the onslaught inflicted by the Glalie, the bull doesn't hesitate to retaliate by rearing back to slam his front hooves into the Glalie's icy crown, hoping to hear the satisfying crunch of ice beneath his DOUBLE KICK. Eddie's brow furrows in concentration as he watches, trusting Beau implicitly but ready to issue commands or encouragement as needed. [break][break]

ONE! two! each hoof finds purchase against an icy surface. the brittle crunch of it’s exterior crust is silent under the booming impact of keratin against raw stone. the way his GLALIE buckles underneath the TAUROS’ weight is the only clue to the attack’s impactful damage, for the pokemon stays withstanding, apathetic in the face of pain.

instead of groaning, the pokemon’s mouth opens, instantly flash freezing its own breath. the blinding light of a small orb of energy reveals the move’s origin. a potent Z-MOVE emanating from it’s innate infinity energy.

GLALIE: NEVERMELT ICE
glalie deals incredible damage with an ice attack that always freezes the enemy.

For the first time since the tournament began, Eddie is overtaken by a sickening feeling of dread as he watches the DOUBLE KICK land, but have no effect on the opposing Glalie. What the hell kind of Pokemon is this? There's hundreds of pounds of muscle beneath Beau's onyx hide; for all of that weight to be driven behind an attack, and for it to do almost nothing chills Eddie to his core. Unfortunately, he now finds Beau similarly chilled, but on a literal level. [break][break]

The small point of energy the Glalie produces bursts into an explosion of ice and hoarfrost, a blinding display of power that forces Eddie to look away. When he looks back up, he sees Beau still and motionless, his hide covered in a thin sheen of frost. The bull has been completely frozen solid, and it takes every bit of willpower for Eddie not to run out onto the field to care for him. [break][break]

There are small twinges of movement, though, as the bull fights against his frozen prison, desperately trying to force himself out of the ice. Eddie supposes that, if the bull can break free in time, he'd likely strike the Glalie with a bout of CLOSE COMBAT, but that's a big if. His stomach sinks as he watches with fear for his Pokemon, fists clenching and unclenching at his sides. What the fuck is he supposed to do?[break][break]

THE Z-MOVE IS POTENT. as expected from their core finisher. but in a match as brief and sparse as the VITAL CITY TOURNAMENT, they’ve yet to whittle their opponent low enough to end it for good. which is why neither are surprised when it breaks free from the sudden permafrost.

chained from their earlier tussle, the GLALIE is in CLOSE COMBAT quarters. another searing blow concusses the pokemon backwards, shaking side to side as it steadies itself. maintaining the constant blows, it opens up with a quicker ICE SHARD, looking to capitalize on a follow up attack.
