throughout the conversation, there's a feeling. [break][break]

a feeling that she can't shake off - a feeling that she hasn't been able to shake off. she can only chalk this gut nagging up as something she's picked up over the years - and that's the ability to recognize a familiar person. the work it took to get to this place was arduous, not without the filth that accompanies it. though the close proximity of passing faces made it easier, it's something she's honed over how many years it's been. [break][break]

he has an air of familiarity around him. [break][break]

yet she'd be able to tell if she's met him before - he has a striking presence, one that transcends his build. imposing, maybe, but not terrifying (at least, not to her; she isn't so oblivious that she can't tell when people make passing glances at her or her conversation partner). perhaps the way he spoke reminded her of someone, but there are many people with that accent, and the way of speaking. maybe she's grasping at straws--[break][break]

"ooooh~" she hums in amusement, the interest has been piqued. "what kind of music? maybe i can try playing it for the next song~" she pauses, a chuckle from peach lips as her eyes squint with the same smile. [break][break]

she's just too friendly. [break][break]

without a spec of caution or a hint of fear. even when he towers over her (like many people, like most people) she doesn't falter. if anything, she reaches up to shake his hand with the same, starry-eyed gaze. it's a smile that reaches bright, green eyes. [break][break]

"sylvia," she starts, followed by the tilt of her head "but you can call me syl, if it makes it easier~."[break][break]

the altaria behind her lets out a proud hum and whistle, followed by the chuckle of her trainer. "oh no, don't say that" the songstress lightly pats the top of the craned bird's head "you'll feed her ego~."

she met them at the bar. [break][break]

not one of the louder clubs, mind. it was a place where you could enjoy a nice glass of wine, with a small ensemble of classical music. it was a small bar on the countryside, and so far removed from the blaring lights and racing track of the city. she'd say it was foreign if she wasn't gradually settling herself into hoenn, by now. [break][break]

the sea had a lull that the dazzling kalos snuffs. [break][break]

'you remind us of our daughter' the woman said, a smile on her lips when sylvia was so eager to help them take care of the wooloo on their farm. the songstress, at least, found it fun talking to the elderly - there was something so endearing about them. maybe that's why she's so open to the idea of looking after the place with someone else. [break][break]

after all, someone they trust must be trustworthy, no?[break][break]

lo and behold, she catches the path of a young man walking around the farm. her lips curl into a beaming smile, bright as she picks up the pace with altaria fluttering at her side. "hello!" [break][break]

she stops in her tracks upon approaching, a hand reaching to gently rub the side of her neck. "i hope i didn't keep you waiting long.."

now he was getting more receptive. that makes it easier. [break][break]

whether it was because he was trying to humour her or it was genuine, she wears a bright smile all the same. it gets brighter when any spark of interest is shown, doubly so when it comes to her music. she reciprocates this openness with her own energy, her body shifting in the stool to turn towards him, and give her full attention. [break][break]

"a little bit of everything?" she chuckles, the songstress plants her arm against the edge of the counter and leans against it. "i wrote the original lyrics a long time ago, then tweaked and fixed it a bit so i could actually perform with it." because there was no way she was going to let the half-finished work of a child be performed on the stage - especially not when it didn't even have a proper melody at the time. [break][break]

"if i'll be honest, though," she follows up, leaning forwards in her stool with a hand raised to gently cup the side of her face. a smile - childish, mischievous this time - falls on her lips. "it's supposed to be played more lively, but i don't have enough instruments, and this place is too quiet for it~." [break][break]

nothing on the establishment, of course. she could just record and compose it, then have it play, but where was the fun in that? [break][break]

she leans back and takes another swing of water. "do you usually listen to music?"

was he one for small talk?[break][break]

it.. didn't seem like it. his body language told her otherwise. usually, when someone wanted to speak with her, they'd turn towards her, give her eye contact, or generally look more open. thankfully for him (and for her, mostly), she was accustomed to this. it came with the job description, and came with the years and years of.. transferrable skills through her years of "work". she knows how to be patient when waiting for a response. [break][break]

still, it seemed like there was a lot weighing on his mind - and who can blame him? everyone's thoughts weighed heavy when they came to drown themselves in alcohol; some more than others. he sounds tired. he sounds exasperated, maybe a little stressed. something too cheery or energetic might bit a little bit too much right now. and so the bar singer leans back, slightly, into her seat with a soft hum. [break][break]

her own drink comes by not long after, and she gives the server a quick nod of thanks before taking a sip of the water. the cold, plain liquid soothes her throat, and gives her enough time to think on her words. one swing and satisfied sigh later, she lights up with a subdued warmth. [break][break]

"thank you!" she chimes, bright and sweet. she doesn't mind the bouts of silence between his words - her thoughts and her words can be the filler if it gets uncomfortable. "i'm glad my music could help you unwind~" she chimes, bright green eyes turning back to gaze up at her new evening chat. [break][break]

"i wrote the song myself, so i was a little nervous performing it~"

that's what the alcohol was for; the liquid courage to press on. though the stage was small and the audience was shabby, it was just the right amount of attention she'd need. it was the right amount of attention she would ever need. the patrons who bar hop from town to town know this by now. the bartenders who have to entertain her occasional small talks and water breaks would know this by now. [break][break]

such is mundane. [break][break]

then something breaks the silence - a man, towering over her even as her knees are digging into the seat of the stool. the bar singer, dressed in white, has to pause and process that she was the one being spoken to when bright, green eyes raise their gaze. there's a prolonged moment of silence as her eyes trace up the figure, until any more will strain her neck. [break][break]

she's had her fair share of encounters - specifically those where they tower over her - but wasn't this a bit too ridiculous? were he any taller, she'd need to properly stand on the stool to see his face (she exaggerates, as she always does, but she'll also insist that there's no lie in her words). it's only after another moment of silence, after his question, does it finally register. [break][break]

"oh! sure, sorry~" she smiles, nonetheless - warm and starry-eyed. she'll use this chance to properly adjust in her seat. now, she rests her elbows against the counter top with her chin resting against the palm of her hand. for a moment, she hesitates to say anything - it's her aversion to silence that pushes her to part her lips. [break][break]

"are you enjoying your night?" she chuckles, with her practiced smile. practiced, but genuine smile.

maybe she's just being paranoid. [break][break]

singing took a lot out of a person, after all. maybe she's a little winded from all the attention. maybe she should ask if she can end her shift in a little bit. they paid her per event, rather than by the hour, so it's no loss to her. so she'll do as she always does; order a glass of water before going back on stage for one last song, then call it a night and head home. [break][break]

that's what's supposed to happen. [break][break]

unfortunately, with wonderful attention comes not-so-wonderful encounters. the feeling of eyes cling to her back once again. this time, she slowly turns around to see an older man smiling to her, so rudely pulling out a stool to sit next to her. if she's honest, seraphim doesn't much pay attention to what he's saying - rather than trying to verbally put off his advances. sadly, he doesn't get the memo. [break][break]

she's about to make the final point when she gives a polite "excuse me, i should probably head back". it usually gets them to stop. sadly, this time is different, and her wrist is grabbed instead. it takes everything in her to not yank her arm away, and rather, wear a nervous smile in the face of his insistence. [break][break]

"come on, i'll buy you a drink!"[break]
"n-no, i think i'm alright. thank y--"[break]
"it'll be fun! come on, loosen up a bit--"[break][break]

she's trying, really. trying not to deck the bar's halls with the bastard, and break character.

oh, whoops. did she say that out loud? well, she did now, and she'll build off it with the same, radiant smile on her lips. "your name is pretty, too." sylvia chimes, gently sitting herself down and situating herself on the boat. maybe it's flattery, but it's all true; sylvia isn't the kind of person to tell a lie. at least, she isn't any more. the primarina is just as spiritly as her trainer, making little jumps along the water's surface as the boat begins to float down its route. the slight, pleasant breeze almost as the trainer forget to answer the earlier question. "oh, right! mackenzie said it was really sudden, and she felt really bad about it." that last part was a bit more than what she actually said, but lydia didn't need to know that. "and.. the mission is to save the luvdisc, right?" though she frames it as a question, she knows the task at hand. [break][break]

"it's a really dangerous world we live in, nowadays." a far cry from her idea of peaceful days.

oh, well, that's new. rarely does she get someone who wants her to play something she listens to, and rarely does she have the time to think about it while on the job. a bright smile stretches across the songbird's lips, her fingers gleefully strumming along the strings of her guitar. she chimes in agreement, especially after everything that was happened today. sylvia wanted nothing more than a peaceful life when she came to hoenn, but clearly she hadn't researched on the region as well as she thought she had -- there's nothing exactly peaceful about worrying for your life if you find yourself alone in a den filled with wolves. [break][break]

her attention turns to the crystals, eyes lighting up at the prospect of getting out. they were lucky - they never actually ran into anything here, and maybe she'll have to think a bit harder and longer before she decides to take someone else's place. "if you want a drink, i know a couple of good bars!" the songstress hums, heel digging into the dirt to pivot her around. [break][break]

she can walk backwards, it's alright; she has her shaymin to keep an eye on the road ahead after all. [break][break]

"if not a bar, though.." she trails off, head tilting "you'd have to show me around, since i only moved in last month~."

what do you do when you're free and unsure? [break]
you sing. [break][break]

it's so stupidly simple. the spotlight is dim and the crowd is quiet. surrounding her is the sound of glasses clicking, whether from mannerisms, celebration or more liquid courage being poured. the people who come to somewhere calmer are those looking for one of two things; a quiet corner to drown their sorrows, or a fancy place to leisure and relax. thankfully, she'll find more of the latter; this sort of establishment doesn't take kindly to aggressive drunkards. thankfully. [break][break]

so the woman with blue-tinted platinum locks can sing freely, strumming on her acoustic guitar a song not heard on any radio or in any video. most patrons don't mind, and some are nice enough to sit back and quiet down so they can enjoy the plucking of the strings and the whistling in her music. [break][break]

the song comes to a close, as they all do, and she wears a smile for the handful of people who listen to the songstress on a stage too small. "thank you for listening~." she hums into the microphone, giving the strings another strum to match the tune of her voice. as per schedule, she gently puts the guitar back into its case before hopping off the barstool set up for the performance. [break][break]

then she makes a beeline towards the bar counter, smiling to the bartender as they pull out a glass of cold water. she so casually leans her upper body against the counter, with knees on the seat of the new stool and legs crossed over the other. [break][break]

the air is filled with the smell of wine, and her ears catch the crunch of pretzels. [break][break]

tonight was going to be peaceful.
