Bailey wondered what to do with so many berries. She had never been inclined to cook, but the sight of pink flesh conjured images of jars of jelly on a shelf. "I'm surprised we didn't see any wild pokemon."[break][break]

But she wondered if the deeper they went, the more rotten the fruit would have become. some were soft in her hand, suggesting that they were almost ready to turn.[break][break]

She tossed one of the ripe fruits to his hands, careful to catch his eye before giving the toss.

"I got my fair share of scars, benoit. they're not all unique... but, hey, I got my share of stories to tell," and implications hung clear in the air as she resumed eating through her pecha berry.[break][break]

she used it as a chance for her other hand to snag the note, folding it tightly in her hand as her eyebrows arched. what was benoit up to? she supposed she would find out.[break][break]

the berries were starting to overripe the deeper they walk, and she can see them bleed and ooze.

there was a moment of silence. a peacha berry joined the basket, adding to the small mound.[break][break]

she almost wanted to offer him one, just so he'd have something to chew on. something to stop the line of inquiries that was diving too quickly to the heart of the matter. "invaders? you mean the ultra beasts?" if this were a normal conversation, bailey would have diverged into a rant about how space pokemon sounded cooler.[break][break]

"lots of things in hoenn can leave scars like that, benoit," and she could not be direct. bailey could be a fool, but she knew that eyes were on her, and that loose lips would not work in her favor.[break][break]

the elite four member had avoided that spotlight, and she did not want it directed to her now.

sweetness faded. in its place, bailey cooper tasted something bitter.[break][break]

wondering why her mouth felt so chalky and dry, she was thankful that thomas had the balls to jump straight to the point. no fluff, huh? "Oh? That's what this is about?" and her eyes focused forward, steeled at the remembrance of past encounters and past battles.[break][break]

her krookodile was different; distorted, demented, changed.[break][break]

he was no longer a pokemon that would seek her hand. he paved his own way, and she can see the scars that marred his body just by her mind's eye. it was the same as her aggron--both surviving an encounter that left them seething in her possession, always eager to fight. "He's a dickhead, but most dark-types are like that..."[break][break]

her voice trails, and she snatches another pecha berry from a low hanging branch.[break][break]

that would not explain the scars, or the redness of his skin, or the way that power oozed from the krookodile like an open wound. "he hasn't really been the same--got into a bad fight, and by the time I could do something about it, it was already over. guess he just wants a rematch." and she understood that hunger better than anyone.

This was a strange place to have lunch.[break][break]

Bailey Cooper bit into a ripe peecha berry, tasting the sweet juice as it gushed from the single bite; sugary and perfect. Verdanturf always grew the best berries. The wide expanse of the berry orchard spread out before her, trees lined in neat and orderly rows.[break][break]

She swallowed, wiping the mess from her face with the back of her hand.[break][break]

“So, yeah. We can take what we can pick,” and Bailey held up her simple wicker basket, “as long as we don't overfill this.”[break][break]

It was a change of pace—better than sitting at a table and paying an exorbitant price for the atmosphere of an establishment.[break][break]

“Now, what do you want to talk about?” There was time to burn.

her breath fogged the goggles.[break][break]

despite his cumbersome appearance, her blastoise was a skilled swimmer. he may not have been as fast or as graceful as the long-tailed milotic they followed, but he certainly seemed adapt to this murky environment. the deeper they went, the harder it was to see.[break][break]

The cold started to press against the insulation of her diving suit. bailey tried to ignore it, and tried to ignore the strange anxiety from swiming in a place where she felt so exposed.[break][break]

blastoise stopped at persephone's arm waving, and it took bailey a moment to decipher what she meant.[break][break]

wordless because of the presence of the re-breather, she pointed the splinter rock to her blastoise. understanding his trainer's wordless gesture, the water-type would swim to the rocks and rear back his head.[break][break]

he would slam himself against it, full force, and bailey felt the shockwave in the water; skull bash.

unlike lucas, she was able to pick up the pace--she blazed ahead of him, turning her head in time to notice his struggle. "call the farmer! Your phone better not be dead this time!"[break][break]

her head turned to spy the strange apple pies, realizing that they were actually pokemon--the sight of their short green legs visible as the wooloos fled from the tiny, tasty looking predators.[break][break]

a pokeball was in her hand--with a wide arcing toss, bailey cooper released kapow.[break][break]

"get those pastries!" and the rest was history. the stubby grass dragons lacked the speed to flee from the encroaching kommo-o. he wrangled them both in his arms, one under each arm.

there was something serene about watching them--like bailey could sit down on the grass, watch these sheep, and forget all of her problems.[break][break]

"...wooloos?" she repeated, before her mistake suddenly dawned on her. "wait, these are wooloos? seriously? these are galar pokemon?" the elite four member had to turn her head to double check, squinting to get a better look. the sea of wool made it hard to decipher their individual qualities.[break][break]

but she realized that there were differences. "whoops."[break][break]

Her eyes snap back, if only because she heard a furry of footsteps and tiny screams--the cottonball-like pokemon clearing as the herd split itself to avoid the rampaging appletuns. "are those apple pies moving?!"

She wasn't alone.[break][break]

Bailey felt her mind race, ready to devise an excuse for the mess she had created—until her eyes swept down to see her own state. She accepted that it would be a failed endeavor, if only because her apron was in a similar state; hard-set flakes of chocolate coated the article of clothing, and there was no way to lie about their existence.[break][break]

So, she sighed, and set down her bowl and accepted that there was another thing in the world that she wasn't good at. “Well, that at least makes me feel better,” and her head turned to glance at the woman that had caught her in the middle of this disaster.[break][break]

The woman looked familiar, but Bailey cannot explain why—was she someone that worked for the council?[break][break]

“Um... Yeah. I'm not cut out for this stuff,” and she turned down the burner, having had it set to full blast. “I'm Bailey.”

Tracking a psychic pokemon sounded like a pain in the ass.[break][break]

Thankfully, Bailey Cooper was not alone in this endeavor, and she turned her head to Kyle Lopez and knew that he would be more than capable. “So, how can you find a scent, anyways? These things don't have hair,” and she wondered why a Beheeyem would feel tempted to abduct farm pokemon in the dead of night.[break][break]

It sounded more like a prank, like there were a bunch of high school kids dressing up as pokemon and fucking with farmers.[break][break]

“Unless we can find... tracks? They leave tracks, right? They're not one of those stupid pokemon that levitate everywhere, right?” Bailey would ramble as she dug through her bag, talking to fill the silence as she tried to find a pokemon for the occasion. “I hope not.”[break][break]

The farm was behind them, and from its rolling hills there was a forest that seemed deep and dark enough to welcome those that would wish to hide in its depths.

“Nah, I think its fine," and she would clap to the little sheep as it stood upright, shaking off the damage before trotting off to join the others.[break][break]

Her eyes would scan the entire herd, not surprised to know that something had been preying upon these cute pokemon. Shit, if she was hungry, these chubby little mareep would look like a good snack. "We just gotta keep an eye out," and she'd stretch and yawn. "I think the dude is really overfeeding these mareep, though. They shouldn't be this fat."
