Water presses against the windows, smothering, suffocating. The courtyard offers little peace for Gavin and yet he finds himself here as he wanders, aimless, adrift in his thoughts as the sub in the seas.[break][break]

Its as if something has pulled him into Marcel's orbit, the lingering remnants of a bitter conversation. He watches the other for a long moment; Marcel is absorbed in his work, oblivious. Gavin could easily walk away and pretend he'd never been here.[break][break]

He approaches and sits down next to his friend.[break][break]

The cherry glows as Gavin inhales, handing Marcel's lighter back to him. His head tilts back as he both savours and resents the calming flood of nicotine into his lungs. Smoke follows the path of his slow exhale.[break][break]

"We've been doing this too fucking long." His eyes are closed, adrift in a sea of memories. He laughs, coughs, reminded of why he'd quit smoking in the first place. His eyes water. "I don't know how we're still alive."

"My own fault." Marcel slaps him on the back when his lungs rebel against his relapse, and Gavin's choking laughter trails off into a dry chuckle. "Thanks."[break][break]

They've always had each others backs, since they were dumb kids pursuing the reckless high of challenge until it turned them to jaded adults struggling to survive in a world that threatened to consume. Even after Marcel had left Rocket and returned, their friendship endured. It'll endure now, Gavin tells himself, even if Lugia's presence has planted the seeds of doubt.[break][break]

"You talking about yourself, or me?" He jests, teeth flashing in a bitter smile. "Fuck, Marcel, you were out. What made you come back?"[break][break]

The question slips out, always wondered but never asked. Hesitation on Gavin's breath, in the way he holds it before an exhale that sees it stretch between them.

The amusement is met with a small smile, almost sad.[break][break]

"You tell me." His tone carries no bitterness. It's been long enough for the sting of betrayal to be little more than a memory of pain. It's not a memory he could forget, but he'd long since decided to forgive. His features crease with sympathy. "It was bad back then. I remember."[break][break]

He'd been fortunate enough to avoid personal involvement in the events preceding Rocket's fall. He had stuck to his research, his experiments.

"I don't blame you for leaving." He's never said the words before. They've been left up to assumption in the ways he'd slowly warmed to Marcel's return to his life. It's the return that puzzles him. "Was it Cadis?"[break][break]

He'd been the reason for many of Rocket's agents to return. A promise of a better future.

That they spoke to him at all these days was a byproduct of his distance, his inability to affect their reputation overseas. Smoke curls before the window in winding patterns as Gavin exhales. "Where'd you end up?"

Gavin can't help but to think that 'home' is the last place he'd have fled to. Marcel is right: there's more to the world than this, and more than Galar. He couldn't have gone to Kanto. Perhaps Johto, where the resistance against Rocket was strong.[break][break]

"I've seen it," he agrees. A tap of his finger against the cigarette scatters ash. "Kalos is nice. Reminds me of Galar in some ways."
