The island upon which their targets had made camp looms on the horizon. It's disturbingly peaceful but for a plume of smoke that winds above the treeline; it was impossible to tell that the place was crawling with Ultra Beasts and their alien masters.[break][break]

He'd been sent by the League, first, a capable trainer with a number of badges that could be 'trusted' to fend for themselves on a reconnaissance mission. Naturally, he'd fed his findings directly back to Rocket — and now he was here again, under cover of darkness and with no League agent breathing down his neck. Emma's presence is much more welcome.[break][break]

Gavin lowers his binoculars and looks to her.[break][break]

"No movement along this side of the treeline. Camp must be further in, and if there's any patrol we can catch them off guard before they alert the others." Though his statement is confident in words, his tone is wary. He remembers the destruction caused by Blacephalon in Littleroot; if just one Ultra Beast could do so much...[break][break]

They don't have a choice. This camp is close to the submarine's current position, threatening Rocket personally. If they left it for the League to take care of, they risked the crossing of their paths.[break][break]

Gavin adjusts his diving mask, the apparatus muffling his voice. "Ready?"

There is a sense of dread on the horizon, she can feel it deep in her bones. Like a sickness, a head-cold that she can't shake, it lingers, those cold claws drawing a path of fear down the length of her spine. She swallows as her gaze focuses on the plume of smoke rising on the horizon. She can see nothing along the stretch of beach and further inland. It leaves a cold, terrible feeling in her belly.[break][break]

Gavin's movement at her side drew her out of her thoughts and she releases the breath she's been holding. She can hear the wariness in his voice and she feels it reflected in her own weariness. She feels drained. [break][break]

She had seen the destruction and devastation the Blacephalon had done to Littleroot. She had heard of what Mossdeep and the surrounding areas had faced as a result of prior Ultra Beast attacks. This was not their war, and yet here they were preparing to fight it anyway. Here she was, defending her home - because that is, after all, what Rocket had become to her. In some aspect, it had become a home.[break][break]

Her own diving mask hangs around her neck and she reaches for it numbly as Gavin lifts his to his mouth. He asks a question and she responds robotically, with a curt nod and a deep breath hissing through the apparatus as she adjusts it into place.[break][break]

"As I'll ever be."[break][break]

This feels different than their fight against the League. It is different. Though there's an ever-present threat of death should a Rocket operation go awry, the League would much rather capture and imprison their targets — these otherworldly foes had no such reservations. They would fight, they would kill, and they would consume. Gavin isn't a man with many fears, but the impending war terrifies him.[break][break]

He hides it well behind his mask of stoicism, but he knows that Emma can read between the lines. Her curt nod is mirrored by his own.[break][break]

Now or never.[break][break]

Gavin vaults the side of their small watercraft and slips into the churning ocean below. Black waters reveal nothing beneath their surface. He is gripped almost instantly by racing thoughts: did they have Ultra Beasts that could swim? Perhaps their scouts were lurking in the depths, looking to pull him beneath and drown him—[break][break]

Breath rattles shakily through the diving mask and Gavin kicks off from the side of the boat for momentum. He slips underwater to mask his approach to the shore, emerging only when there was no room left to swim. In spite of the abject terror that had gripped him in the water, standing on the beach offers little relief. His gaze finds the smoke curling above the treeline — bizarrely, it makes him want a smoke. His hand subconsciously reaches for a carton of cigarettes he hadn't brought.[break][break]

He finds pokeballs, instead, releases a Greninja onto the beach. There's Rotom in his phone, the Klefki at his belt... and a heavy weight against his hip that he hopes he won't need to utilize.[break][break]

"We need to seek cover in the trees," he says, barely above a whisper. His fingers brush Emma's ever so briefly, as if he's reassuring himself with her presence. Then, he darts for the forest.

For a moment after Gavin dives, Emma remains on the edge, eyes watching as the water splashes up, as it falls silent and Gavin disappears beneath the surface. She had heard his shaky breath, the sharp intake that rattled the apparatus and reminded her just how real this situation was. And how strong Gavin was to be facing it anyway.[break][break]

She sucks in her own measured breath before she, too, plunges into the unknown. It had occurred to her that the people, the beings they were chasing after could be lurking in the depths, waiting for them. But she wouldn't abandon Gavin. He was counting on her.[break][break]

Bubbles rise to the surface as the cold wraps around her frame. She breathes out, sucking back air as her apparatus gets to work. Goosebumps rise from her skin and she knows they aren't a result of the cold. It takes a moment for her eyes to adjust to the darkness and she can see Gavin already swimming his way to the shore. She follows his lead, careful not to breach the surface.[break][break]

Water weighs her down as she makes it to the other side to stand beside Gavin. Her attention follows his to the curling smoke weaving above the trees. It smells acrid and wrong, but she can't place why. It leaves a bitter taste in her mouth and an unsettling feeling in her gut, one that she can't shake. She swallows as Gavin whispers to her, and her fingers twitch to seek his long after he's darted away.[break][break]

But she follows him with ease, hesitating for only a moment. Her fingers find pokeballs at her belt and additional shadows keep pace at her heels, three Lycanroc and a Zoroark, their breaths a soft pant, masked by their soft footfalls.[break][break]

It's seconds before he reaches the treeline, but time seems to stretch endlessly in the open expanse of beach. He is quick but careful, placing his feet in such a way to avoid the snap of a branch or rustle of leaves as he comes to rest between two thick trees.[break][break]

Immediately, he shifts to look over his shoulder, relief flooding him as he spots Emma's silhouette. There is no time to ruminate on such emotion — the overwhelming attachment and dependence. There is only a glance, his eyes bright in the gloom and full of devotion, before he turns away to survey their surroundings. Though his breaths come soft, measured, they are distressingly loud in the quiet of night.[break][break]

As they slip through the trees, the acrid tang of smoke goes stronger. His stomach roils with the undertone: flesh, burning. It makes him think of Kanto. Bile burns the back of his throat and he has to stop, to cover his mouth and force himself to swallow.[break][break]

He remembers Katherine and Remiel's report. They eat people.[break][break]

Emma hadn't been at the debriefing, but he'd naturally filled her in the moment they'd reunited after the fact.[break][break]

After fighting back vomit, he signals to a faint light some distance ahead: their camp. His own Lycanroc is released to prowl alongside the pair, and Gavin finds the heavy beast ball resting in his grip. He hadn't wanted to use it, but...[break][break]

They eat people.[break][break]

He would do anything to survive. He would do all of that and more to protect Emma. She is more practised than him in stealth: he signals for her to take the lead, his eyes promising that he will be right behind.

Emma matches pace but at a distance. The familiar weight of her weapon, sealed in something water-proof for their brief swim is heavy between her shoulders. She exhales softly as her feet pick through the underbrush, careful not to step too heavily, to draw attention to herself. Where Gavin's eyes find hers, she is looking elsewhere, searching for a vantage point. [break][break]

The smell of burning flesh barely makes the woman flinch. She is iron, unbendable, unbreakable, unshakable. Her expression is pinched, difficult to read, dark. Her attention lingers on her partner's back as he stops to cover his mouth, to hold back the wave of sickness, of fear. She, too, is afraid. It pricks at her fingers, leaving her cold and empty. There is a sense of urgency that encourages her to keep going. This is different, she knows, than hunting criminals. It brings her a sense of dread.[break][break]

Gavin signals to a faint light in the distance. It flickers eerily in the crowd of trees. Shadows dance back and forth across the glow and she swallows. Four wolves now prowl in the dark as they lurch forward, Gavin having added his own to the pack. It strengthens their numbers and their confidence. Emma's fingers twitch in quiet anticipation, as if paranoid that eyes are on her.[break][break]

When she is given the go-ahead to take the lead, she does so silently. Discreetly and on the way, she has released her Skuntank and Dragapult. As soon as she is in range she pauses to double-check her rifle. And then, with a steady breath and a quiet signal to Gavin to hold back, the woman takes aim to fire. [break][break]

Skuntank and Dragapult have managed to stealthily spray the area, the tents, the supplies, with poisonous gas. It would explode if given enough heat - and Emma was packing.[break][break]

"We have one chance, Gavin. Are you ready?"[break][break]

Emma's fingers are surprisingly relaxed as she holds her rifle in place, glancing at him carefully as she prepares to take her shot. She intended to set the entire camp on fire, destroying everything and anything in it. Innocent lives aside, she wasn't taking any chances. Dragapult had already managed to get Skuntank away as best she could. The wolves lie in wait a safe distance away, presumably, ready to take down any that attempt to escape the inferno.[break][break]

The acrid scent of poison tickles at his nose, and Gavin wrinkles it. He understands her plan the moment she lifts her rifle. He's not sure if she knows his.[break][break]

Gavin's hand clenches around Lugia's beast ball. No one in Hoenn had been prepared for an alien invasion. They were fighting, more than anything, to survive. If his resolve is at all rattled, it doesn't show in his sharp nod.[break][break]

As soon as the shot is fired, he offers a silent apology to Emma and Marcel before tossing the beast ball high into the air. Out here, this desolate island, there would be no one left to witness the terrifying majesty of the creature whose dark wings cover the moon. Lugia shrieks over the roar of the inferno and Gavin braces himself against the wave of heat that ripples from the blast's center. Wind and shadow gather into a cyclone that rips through the campsite, drawing in the flames and any unfortunate souls who stood too close.[break][break]

His heart races as he returns the beast to its prison.[break][break]

"Overhead!" he warns, and tugs Emma toward cover as a Naganadel fires a spray of poison toward them. He can hear the eerie howl of his Lycanroc; the werewolf thrived on such chaos. "We need to run before it spreads."

She exhales, squeezing the trigger. Her bullet flies and ignites the gas on impact. There is screaming as flames eat up the camp. Shadows dance as the invaders attempt to make their escape. But there is no escape, especially not with what horror Gavin releases.[break][break]

Emma sucks in a breath, visibly rattled despite the steady grip on her weapon. She lowers it as the Lugia is released. The shadow Pokemon's scream is intense, rattling her to her core. The Lugia takes the inferno under its wings and turns it into a nightmare. The cyclone it creates tears the world asunder, destroying everything in its path. Whatever escapes succumbs to the wolves, torn apart in the dark and never to be heard from again.[break][break]

And Emma is rooted. She only moves when Gavin's hand latches onto her arm, pulled along with his tug as the poison spreads toward them like wildfire. She raises the collar of her shirt over her mouth, and she nods blankly as the man pulls her to safety and into a run. Her wolves rejoin her eventually, avoiding the smoke and the poison, clearing away enemies should they stray too close to their master.[break][break]

It's not like Emma to hesitate. That's what scares Gavin the most: that brief, split-second moment between Lugia's return and Gavin's frantic grip on her arm in which it becomes clear she's somewhere else. Concern sees his eyes wide and searching, his grip too-tight before he recognizes and lets go. His heart is pounding.[break][break]

He wants to ask her if she's all right, but there's no time.[break][break]

They run, and Gavin hears screaming over the roar of flame. It twists in his gut but they're aliens, they eat people and he keeps running. The heat behind them sears his skin and dries out his throat. By the time they reach the shoreline, his lungs are ablaze as well.[break][break]

There's but a fleeting moment to catch his breath, steady himself, and he touches Emma's arm gently before diving into the dark water and heading for the boat.
