The boat rocked gently from side to side in the gentle ocean waves and Chryssa shut the book she’d been reading with a snap, somewhat regretting her choice to share the pontoon boat with her mission partner rather than simply riding Ness. Lapras were surprisingly steady in the water, though Chryssa found it painful to sit on one’s hard shell for too long. I’d prefer to socialize anyway, of course, she thought, but a padded cushion is also a nice change.

The warmer waters surrounding Ever Grande City seemed to be a local breeding ground for many aquatic Pokemon, including the Corsola she and Mr. Priam had agreed to shepherd for the final leg of their migration. It was quite a long journey, as Chryssa understood it. Fraught with peril, she thought, eyes wandering out across the sea and fixing themselves on the approaching speedboat, With storms, and mutiny, and beasts from the deep.

Or, more likely, underprepared trainers had just run out of supplies. Far less interesting, but sadly realistic. It wasn’t surprising that not every so-called escort would make it to the end, and that some would choose to pass the baton to fresh faces and fresh Pokemon.

Chryssa had been hoping for something more exciting.

”Ah, here they come,” she said, draping one arm over the railing and waving with the other. She filled her lungs and called out, projecting her voice to ring theatrically. ”Ahoy, fellow trainer! What status report do you have?”

She shaded her eyes, searching the water eagerly for signs of approaching Corsola as the boat pulled up next to them. They weren’t in sight yet, and Chryssa turned to study the newcomer instead. The lone man on board looked exhausted. There were dark circles under his eyes, and his legs shook as he stood to pass a GPS locator and a stack of documents over to their boat. Chryssa eyed him in surprise as she took the clipboard from his hands, passing the GPS to Mr. Priam. She tried to erase the concern from her face and project confidence as she turned back to the haggard researcher.

”Is everything… all right?” she asked carefully.

“Something’s been following us,” the man said.

priam takes the device and helps the man get onboard. he volunteered for the job without any experience in the field, and any guidance from someone who does was welcome. there also was a probability that maybe he wouldn't get paid if he didn't assist this person though.

as soon as the scientist boards the boat, priam stares at the device given to him. blinking lights and a grid do not make sense for him despite being familiar with them with his other line of duty, but he assumes that it wouldn't be his job to interpret what it was in the end. he seldom did in rocket anyways.

"just tell me what it is and i'll beat it up!"

he lifts his head up and starts to shadow box in a direction away from them as if he'd actually be the one doing the fighting rather than his pokemon. at the very least, it shows enthusiasm. "it's been sooo boring. let me have some fun!" he whines.

"where is it? is it in this thing here?" he asks, pertaining to the locator.

Chryssa’s eyes narrowed at the scientist, trying to gauge whether lack of sleep and exhaustion from the journey might be playing into his assessment. Maybe that’s all, she thought, trying to curb the thrill of growing excitement within her. Or maybe something’s out there. Something terrible.

She couldn’t wait.

”My my, Mr. Priam, you actually have some spunk!” she said, casting an admiring glance towards her mission partner. ”I positively can’t wait to see your grand battle. I just knew this mission would be exciting.” She clasped her hands, smiling. Some might have assumed the teenager was being sarcastic, but her sincerity was more alarming.

“Battle?” The researcher asked, voice pitching shrilly. “We’re not battling. We have to get the Corsola out of here!” He jabbed at the GPS in Priam’s hands, indicating a dark blob slowly inching on screen. “N-no, it’s not here yet. I’m not sure what it is, but this stalking behavior isn’t typical of Huntail or Gorebyss. I suspect an invasive species. It’s been following us since we left the harbor, picking them off one by one— if it follows them to their breeding grounds it’ll decimate the local population.”

“Well, I think the boat drives itself at this point,” Chryssa pointed out, indicating the many dots on screen that seemed to indicate the migrating corsola. There were many, many more than she’d expected. ”I’m not sure there’s any stopping them. Unless you have an idea, Priam!” Her tone of voice changed, becoming brighter, as she glanced at the blue-haired fellow. He said he’s been bored. Let’s fix that.

Holding onto the railing to steady herself, gesturing at the black splotch on the GPS, Chryssa smiled. ”I propose we act as decoys!”

he grins, taking the compliments as genuine. he'll take any praise he gets, and even muddle it with his childish imagination, just to make things work in his head.

priam spaces out as they talk more and more about the situation. little information enters his head as he tries to make sense of the equipment before him. the terms 'invasive species', as simple of a concept as it was, wasn't something he deals with everyday and has been expunged from his knowledge until this moment.

he returns to reality once he hears his name get called.

"huh?"

stopping them equated to beating them up. "yeah!" he blurts out, agreeing to the plan without putting much thought into it. "we bait them to a corner and beat 'em up!" it's effective against people, and priam believes it would work with pokemon as well.

"how do we get bait them anyways? string a corsola by the end of the boat and hope they follow it?"

"No! You can't!" the researcher blurted.

It was an overly serious response to what Chryssa assumed her mission partner had intended as a joke. Still, the sort of crude simplicity to "beating them up" appealed to her. She stopped and studied the disheveled scientist, smoothing over her expression. Was he hiding something? If so, Chryssa intended to pry it out of him.

"Why, you seem quite upset for a mere suggestion," she said, watching him carefully. She tried to keep her tone light. "Particularly for such an unfeasible one-- no offense intended!" The girl smoothed down her hair, eyes narrowing. "After all, it would require a Corsola."

The researcher looked deeply uncomfortable. Chryssa cast a triumphant glance towards Priam and turned back. "Pray tell, Mr. Scientist, you wouldn't have a Corsola we could use... would you?"

The man finally broke down, admitting that periodically along the journey, it was standard procedure to net a specimen or two for general examination and tagging. One such specimen was already on the research vessel behind him, awaiting release. It was likely that the predator would chase stragglers rather than taking on the full colony at once, even this close to the breeding grounds.

"But I won't let you use it as bait," he added in a rush. It was noticeably unconvincing.

Chryssa leaned over to look at the GPS pad in Priam's hands again, noting the dark patch growing closer. "So! Decoy it is," she said brightly, clasping her hands together. "Marvelous. Fetch the Corsola here, please." She turned away from the researcher, who, torn, finally moved to do as she'd said. "Do you have any water Pokemon, Priam?" she asked, looking out across the water with one hand on the rail. "I'd rather not actually sacrifice the Corsola once we catch this beast's attention."

"hell yeah, i do!"

he takes out a pokeball as soon as he's asked about a water-type and releases his samurott on board. he pats it on the shoulder to acclimate it to the people around it, but the stoic expression of the samurott makes it seem like it doesn't need it.

"don't worry. samurott got this!" he punches the air as if shadow boxing. "my boy goes pap pap pow at those baddies underwater, whatever they are."

he settles and peers on the water. from the surface, he cannot see much to make a proper judgement. he whips his head at the scientist with a mischievous grin. "come on! you can trust my sammy. he's strong, he's tough, he's dependable. what else are ya worried about?"

while still reluctant at doing so, the scientist complies with priam, if only because he doesn't show any signs of stopping from being insistent. he releases his corsola into the water, before priam follows it up by placing a foot on one of the railings and pointing at the water afterwards.

the samurott quickly rushes in and dives after the corsola. as soon as both are underwater, priam turns to chryssa. "ya got water-types too?" he asks.

“Just the one,” Chryssa answered with a sunny smile, waiting for the dependable-looking Samurott to join the “bait” Corsola in the water. She aimed her own capsule carefully at the ocean and released Ness. The Lapras formed already half-submerged and the boat rocked slightly at the sudden displacement of water, causing Chryssa to teeter slightly into Priam. Her smile disappeared for a moment before she righted herself. ”Ah, my apologies,” she said, easing herself back into one of the padded seats on the boat. ”I must not have my sea legs yet… so they say.”

There was a sharp twinge of pain in Chryssa’s legs, but the girl ignored it. She would not show weakness here, at the peak of their mission. Things were just about to start getting good.

The smart thing to do would be to split up - send the Pokemon off as a fortified diversion, while the humans finished escorting the Corsola colony to their breeding grounds. I can’t exactly let a mystery like this go unsolved, though, can I? She wanted to see more than a shadowy blob on a GPS screen.

“Mr. Researcher,” she said clearly, not caring to know his actual name, “I think you’re capable of handling the Corsola school from here, aren’t you?” The man sputtered something half heartedly and Chryssa went on sunnily as if he hadn’t spoken, ”Mr. Priam and I will be carrying on ahead. Fear not, we’ll return your Corsola in one piece. For now… the danger in the deep calls!”

The man returned to his speedboat and slowly motored off, leaving the two of them and their water Pokemon bobbing in his wake. ”Let’s get moving. Where’s the... thing?” Chryssa asked Priam, who still had the GPS. ”More importantly, what should we call it? The Creature? The Beast?” This was what was really on her mind. ”I suppose The Monster is overambitious...”

Well, she’d had enough of waiting. From her seat on the back of the boat, she pulled the throttle and heard the motor roar to life, chugging water. She had no fear the Pokemon could keep up. ”One last question: who’s driving?”

"they say that?" priam asks, having genuinely not be educated in certain things.

priam actually spaces out when chryssa starts to elaborate her plan, only coming to his senses when he hears his name again. too excited for a fight, his mind is muddled with such thoughts that he forgot that they're not supposed to head in blind.

"y-yeah, we will!" he echoes, unsure of what's happening.

he hastily gives the device to chryssa when she asks for it since he doesn't want to hurt himself from the confusion of using such device. naming the unknown pokemon does get his attention, as he starts comparing each example with each other.

"let's go with... the creature. sounds mysterious enough, like straight from a horror film!"

when asked on who's driving, priam quickly jumps on the driver's seat and takes initiative. "i got my license earlier this year! i got it! just point the way and i'll get you there!"

jokes on her since driving with a car is way different with boats. he'd manage to move the boat to their destination most likely, but at the expense of comfort and smoothness of the ride.

Chryssa wasn’t sure what qualified one to get a boating license, but at least Priam had enthusiasm. She’d been hoping to stand at the prow, laughing victoriously as they sped towards danger, but the ride was so bumpy she’d been forced to stay in the back of the boat near the motor instead. There was no way her legs could take that much stress.

Ness kept pace with the boat as it drove, long neck outstretched. He opened his beak in a wide grin as he made eye contact with her, then dipped it again to scoop up the researcher’s Corsola by one horn. It squeaked, stumpy legs wriggling, as Ness swished it around it in the water before tossing it playfully at Priam’s Samurott like a game of water polo. Oh, well. I’m sure it’s fine.

Chryssa looked away, squeezing her watering eyes half-shut as the boat skipped across the water like a stone. The balmy ocean air suddenly seemed stinging, and her cheeks were turning rosy from the cold. The book she’d been reading earlier slid off the seat beside her. She made a halfhearted grab for it, but movement on-screen of the GPS caught her attention instead.

“It’s changed course towards us, ten o’clock!”
She pointed ahead and to the left, wind whipping at her hair. “ONWARD, BRAVE PRIAM! Ness, dive down and see if you can flush it out. I wish to see this fiendish creature with mine own eyes!” The Lapras’ blue head dipped and the creature submerged, disappearing down below. On the GPS, Chryssa watched him swimming towards the dark, amorphous shape.

A moment later, a flash of blue light lanced from beneath the water. Ice Beam? Chryssa had time to think before the waves surged and a long, crackling sheet of ice broke the surface like a hidden iceberg, sending a wave of water rolling towards them.

"i'm brave priam! i'm onwards-ing!"

priam steers the boat with a sharp turn to get them to their target the fastest way possible, albeit not the safest way nor the most comfortable one. he follows the visible signs of the pokemon they're chasing after, his samurott closely following beside them.

when the huge wave threatens to swallow the ship and capsize it, the samurott matches the ice beam with another of his own. it freezes the surge of water as the iceberg disturbs it, preventing their boat from sinking.

"hell yeah, sammy!" he cheers with a bark.

he attempts to drive the boat closer to the target, but with it underwater, there's nothing much else to be done by those at the surface. "my samurott's gonna be protecting this boat. it's up to your lapras to get it now," priam points out.

his shoulders start to rise and fall excitedly, triggered by the instance of action moments earlier. priam's restless, but he does his best to remain on the driver's seat instead of getting in on the action as well.

Involuntarily, Chryssa cried out when the surging wave was reduced to a sheet of ice, one hand thrown up to shield her face. She lowered it and immediately seized the rail as the boat turned, Priam driving them beyond the ice and closer to the Creature.

Her stomach lurched. Funny. I didn’t think motion sickness would be a problem on this mission. She turned her head to look back behind them. What had that Ice Beam been before? Had it been Ness, or had it been the Creature?

Speaking of which, she didn’t see the researcher’s Corsola. Oh, well. It was bound to happen. Last she’d seen, Ness had been playing with it in the water. Had the Lapras taken it down to the depths with him?

Chryssa shivered. The warm, balmy ocean had taken on a strange chill, and not just from the dual sheets of ice now floating behind them. She checked the GPS and blinked in surprise. The dark core seemed to have spread, and a multitude of tendrils were branching out from its center. “Something’s happening,” she murmured, then louder, “I think it’s coming to the surface—”

The waves shuddered, then bristled suddenly with what Chryssa could only describe as spines. Moving on thick, jagged branches, they broke the surface of the water like the tentacles of some enormous monster, blindly grasping for its prey.

The strangest part was that they were translucent— like it wasn’t quite there. They looked like they were made of mist, risen and given sentience from the depths. And worse, the boat would soon be surrounded.

the frozen tidal wave only lasts for a moment longer as cracks from the ice formation starts to form. priam steers the ship with a sharp turn with one hand, and then grabbing onto chryssa's shirt from her back with the other, pulling her away from the railings.

"hold on!"

a chunk of ice disturbs the waters as it finally collapses from a certain height. priam manages to get the boat out of the way, although the boat still manages to get thrown wildly around.

priam tries to brace himself from the boat's steering wheel, mostly acclimated to the harsh movements from previous jobs. he tries his best to keep chyrssa from being flying out too, finally noticing that she wasn't as fit as him for a thrashing like this.

once the waters subside, priam peers over the edge. his samurott already notices the dangers below, but remains above the water.

"wait, what was that again?" priam asks, unable to pick up what she had said when he was concentrating on stabilizing the boat earlier, unaware of what's happening next.

The boat was buffeted like a leaf in a gale, its hull shuddering as the waves rocked it. Chryssa was only narrowly saved by Priam as she fell and slid along the floor of the boat, sliding towards the opposite railing. She seized the back of the driver’s seat with both hands, the GPS gone, bruises already forming under her sensitive skin.

She had a habit of putting her life into other people’s hands.

“I said, it’s coming,” Chryssa repeated herself, dazed. She couldn’t take her eyes off the sight as the misty, translucent branches streamed up from the water, joining and braiding together. At long last, a ghostly visage rose up at the heart of them. It was not so much a face as a mask, a piece of white coral mosaic whose vessel had been broken. Something else was floating inside the main mass of the creature’s body as well: a small, pink shape that looked somehow... familiar.

“Oh dear. It appears to have captured the researcher’s Corsola,” Chryssa said, trying to sound sympathetic. Well, they had been using it as bait, so it wasn’t entirely unexpected.

Ten other hazy, ectoplasmic antlers bristled from the water, each bearing another trapped and paralyzed Corsola. Their pink color seemed dull, faded, and some had turned an ashy gray. “Aha! Yes! I’ve got it!” Chryssa exclaimed, tone entirely inappropriate for the scenario. She snapped her fingers. “A vengeful spirit crawls along the sea floor, looking for vestiges of its lost life. For some reason it is drawn to these creatures. Its family? Its friends?” Her eyes blazed as she kept narrating. “But everything it touches fades, and its attempts only hurt them more!”

Taking advantage of the momentarily stable boat, she stood up despite her bruises, pointing gleefully at the Cursola. “You who trawl the sea for memory, and feed on the living to take back what you’ve lost! The Corsola breeding grounds are a place for new life, not for those who cling to life long passed.”

Chryssa paused dramatically. “You will never be with them. So begone!”

Unsurprisingly, the floating face didn’t seem to like that. It scowled, hollow mouth twisting bitterly. Whatever its real motivation was, Chryssa certainly had not endeared herself to it. More horns bristled out of the waves, shooting towards the boat.

The blue-white light of Ice Beam flickered across the water as Ness resurfaced, the Lapras sweeping the incoming rush of spikes with the beam of crackling cold. Frozen, the ectoplasmic tendrils no longer seemed so insubstantial. Perhaps, they could be broken...

"oh shit! we're doing this?!"

priam quickly stops the boat once he heard chryssa's monologue to join her on her final standoff for the boss battle. he stands at the edge of the boat, rocking it slightly when he places his foot on top of the rails.

"i'm initiating the ghost busting protocol, boss!" he yells, whistling for his samurott to come over. a finger dramatically sweeps from his side and points towards the cursola. "hydro pump!"

the samurott readies its attack, hitting the frozen bits of off the cursola with pressurized jets of water. the force is enough to immediately break off brittle segments of ice, snipping them off from the main body as the move connects.

"this is penance for your sins, evildoer. you will never be forgiven for disturbing peace in this world."

priam continues to laugh as he roleplays, getting too absorbed to the part he's given himself. it stops when he sees the tentacle holding the corsola falls as well, dropping the water-type into the depths.

"oh." he pauses for a moment. "can it, like, swim?" he asks.

Immediately envious of Priam's ability to strike such a dynamic pose on the rails, Chryssa wrestled down her disappointment and seized for a handrail of her own as the boat lurched, trying to steady her legs underneath her. The TWONGG of ghostly branches hammering against the steel hull reverberated through the vessel. "Yes! Get it!" she shouted back to her partner, feeling dizzy. I guess it didn't like my monologue. Villains were always such bad sports...

The Samurott's Hydro Pump sheaved through the frozen ectoplasm, littering the water with floating chunks of ice. She saw the researcher's Corsola fall with a plonk as well. Could Corsola swim? Probably not while frozen, she thought, but never mind that.

"I'm sure it's fine!" Chryssa called, more anxious to quell the creature she'd inadvertently angered. "Bust that ghost, brave Priam! You have the power to banish this creature from the oceans once and for all!"

The Cursola's pale mask gaped soundlessly, eyes stretching wide and burning black. A dark aura surrounded its remaining tendrils as it used HEX, grasping for both Ness and Priam's Samurott. The Lapras dove underwater to try and avoid it, but through the swirling bubbles he could see again the main body of the cursed coral was far larger underneath--more dark tendrils waited to grasp him, his flippers growing numb and dead as the attack did its work.

Focusing at close range, the Lapras stretched his neck and used Water Pulse. The globe of seawater shot up out of the surface and burst on the creature's face, leaving it blinking and confused.

Separated from the main body, the freed (yet frozen) Corsola began to regain color, bobbing half-above and half-below the churning surface. Chryssa spied a large fishing net that had slid across the ground and scooted towards it on her knees. It would take some timing, but she could probably scoop up the researcher's Corsola when it came close...

cursola used hex! lapras used water pulse. cursola is confused...
