it is only after the fourth match that the crowd finally gets characteristically rowdy, howling and clapping reverberate throughout the caged pit of the battle tent's nightly exploits. underground fight clubs are not valerio's cup of tea but he has been recently involved since most of the guys and gals participating are either rockets or social outcasts—a bunch of misfits uninterested with his true identity. and with his dragapult winning his bid every night he comes to play, what can possible go wrong?[break][break]

“can anyone do better than that?” above the blood drenched arena stands the rocket redhead with his ghost dragon, mask covering his face from the audience's recognition. as he taunts the people for another challenge, they erupt to an even more noisier crowd until he hears footsteps approaching the gates.[break][break]

“are you sure you're up to the challenge?” valerio gibes as hazel eyes fixate on their fifth opponent of the night.[break][break]

Well, here he was.

Novak did not think he'd find himself out here in an underground Pokemon battling ring, of all things. But someone had pointed out to him that they would be an excellent way to spectate a full-force fight, which was difficult to see most of the time. So he'd come with a mask, as an appropriate precaution to avoid recognition.

What he didn't expect was some rowdy, probably drunk fellow pushing him forward into the ring with an eager yell. Novak stumbled a little, surprised. He hadn't foreseen the possibility of fighting himself, but he supposed that hands-on experience was often the best teacher, and he would be glad to test the limits of his own Pokemon.

Pumpkin, his Gourgeist, floated cheerfully alongside him. Novak didn't know how well she'd do against the opponent's Dragapult. It was a strong specimen, having just won several bouts in a row, so the match surely be hard-fought. But Novak knew that Pumpkin was never to be underestimated, either.

Novak nodded in response to Valerio's gibe. "Well, I didn't expect to fight, honestly. But I'm sure Pumpkin and I will give you a challenge you'll remember." The Gourgeist cackled eerily beside him, sizing up the enemy Dragapult. She waited for no instruction before moving around to the side, launching a volley of Leech Seeds at the dragon and hoping to snare its ghostly form in them.

“hah, you speak too much, kid.” when the masked guy enters the battlefield with his leech seeding gourgeist, valerio's dragapult slips easily into the phantasmal realm using phantom force to avoid the exploitative grass-move. “tricks like that won't work on my dragon.”[break][break]

of course, dragapult's escape is met by the booings of the crowd even when he's practically a patron in the establishment. the people of the underground battle tent wants blood.[break][break]

they just have to wait for him to make to make it happen, though.[break][break]

Novak nodded as the Dragapult he was facing vanished. Yep, that was a trick rather typical of ghost types. In fact, Pumpkin could imitate it herself. The command was on the tip of his tongue before he reconsidered; maybe Phantom Force would be of more value as a surprise, when his opponent wasn't expecting it. For now, he could capitalize on the opportunity he was given.

"Nice vanishing act," Novak stated dryly. "Pumpkin, give our opponent a warm welcome back when they reappear."

The Gourgeist snickered, pink light enveloping her as she prepared up a Moonblast. The light increased in intensity as Pumpkin waited for the Dragapult to reappear.

It would be so worth it, when she released the attack right in that vanishing scrub's face.

the dragapult rematerializes into the arena with a glistening dome, a light screen cocooning from its phantasmal form just before the pumpkin's moonblast sizzles into the psychic barrier. the impact throws off darty into the metal rails of the ring as the crowd's noise drowns its whining. “looks like you have tricks up your sleeves, too.”[break][break]

the ghost dragon cranes forward and hovers back into the stadium as if telling his trainer it is still good to fight.[break][break]

“he says bring it on.” he snickers, darty copying valerio's exact expression. “the real showdown is about to start.”[break][break]

Novak smiled as Pumpkin's attack struck the Dragapult head-on. The Light Screen mitigated some of the damage, but that was no problem. Especially considering that Pumpkin, so far, had not taken a single hit.

"Tricks are Pumpkin's whole thing," he replied to Valerio. He shrugged as he said that the real showdown was about to start. As far as Novak was concerned, it had already started, and he was winning.

Pumpkin needed no instruction. The Light Screen would be a problem, but she decided to strike while the iron was still hot, preparing and launching another Moonblast at the shadowy dragon.

as his defenses are finally erected, the dragapult meets the incoming moonblast headon. the dragon winces from the pain, thankful for the significant contraction of the impact as he launches his own fire blast into the unsuspecting pumpkaboo.[break][break]

“i can see that.” he sneers with contempt. “but i hope it has other weapons in its arsenal.”[break][break]

Pumpkin squealed angrily as the Fire Blast struck her side, the dragon's attack scorching her and leaving a lingering burn. The smell of smoke came from the battlefield.

Novak pursed his lips. "Heal up," he directed Pumpkin.

The Gourgeist resumed with a volley of Leech Seeds flung at the Dragapult once again, hoping to drain some of its health and restore her own. Hopefully it wouldn't try to avoid the attack with Shadow Force again, now that it knew she had Moonblast to deal with it.

darty observes the gourgeist writhe in pain as fire blast hits it: an attack it prides itself with assurance. however, when its trainer begins ordering it to launch another blast of leech seed, the dragapult immediately checks on valerio who sternly shakes his head. his trainer has a plan, he thinks.[break][break]

the seeds land before him then it erupts with a blast of live vines enveloping the dragon. appendages latch on his limbs, his neck, and his tail, digging into his flesh as they siphon life out of him just as when valerio shouts in haste, “phantom force!”[break][break]

taking advantage of what probably is Novak Manchester's bliss with the attack's initial impact, dragapult shifts his focus towards the ghost pumpkin before slipping back into the phantasmal plane. with much more speed than his first attempt, the ghost dragon will lunge itself into his opponent the moment he returns to the battleground.[break][break]

And, finally, Pumpkin managed to land a Leech Seed.

The battle wasn't looking too good for him and Pumpkin, overall. The Dragapult's Fire Blast had done a disproportionately large amount of damage, and the Light Screen had weakened any other Moonblasts. But at least they had gotten a couple of hits in.

The Dragapult vanished again, but Novak and Pumpkin had one last trick up their sleeve.

"You too," said Novak, and Pumpkin followed his opponent into the void, vanishing as well.

The Dragapult reappeared again to find Pumpkin gone as well.

"Now! called Novak, and Pumpkin appeared once again, rushing forward and cloaked with ghostly energy. If they weren't going to win, they'd give it one last hurrah before calling it quits.

valerio grits in annoyance when the gourgeist decides to immitate their strategy. dragapult returns to the physical realm with his target missing, then reappearing in-front of the dragon as a ghostly surprise, lunging forward.[break][break]

the attack takes darty a few feet backwards, enduring the writhing pain before rushing forward with another fire blast, going full force in order to decimate the pumpkin pokemon.[break][break]

“take my dragapult's full force!”[break][break]
