The landscape, unsmote by war, trembled beneath the weight of the return of its lord.[break][break]

Bailey Cooper does not pay respect to such outdated mythos; no time to care for the beliefs of long-forgotten ancestors, who once depicted this legendary to long forgotten walls. Fervent in their worship, would their hearts still if they had seen what she had done?[break][break]

Pokeball clenched in her hand, she rode atop Groudon with a hand stilled to his neck; her outline nothing more than a flea to the size of the beast, who's crimson sheen shone bright even as the sky darkened to a blackened sheet.[break][break]

Beneath the labor of their work, they would even char the sky with burnt hues of orange and red; light from basalt-like strength reflecting to the high skies, where clouds roamed low with the threat to burst.[break][break]

It grew late into the evening, and yet there was still work to be done.[break][break]

A canyon, reforged anew, as volcanic springs rose to release its life-blood to the tainted soil. There, the unsmote would be forged again, and the trenches of poison would be expunged through sheer force of heat.[break][break]

Rising cinders illuminated her, rising past as she seemed to lean herself forward; ominous, for the faintest of moments.[break][break]

Her own heat remained unaccounted for; still smoldering, she would tap a hand to the legendary as a request to be returned to a higher perch.[break][break]

“I'll be back. I gotta see where they'll want us, next.”[break][break]

Because they would have to reforge this region anew, and the new Champion had noted that her Legendary did not protested such requests.[break][break]

Thermal light rose up, basking out from the Legendary's work like a distant spotlight.[break][break]

It painted the League camp in its warm hues, where people apart of the reconstruction were stationed.[break][break]

There, she would find the closest stool, take a cup of coffee, and watch Groudon as he worked; the flimsy tarp hoisted by pegs still exposed to the elements, only serving as a temporary roof as the wind still carried its chill.

"wow, look who we have here espeon, gardevoir!" a familiar voice rung out. standing behind the brunette with his bubbly smile, it was an old comrade to the new champion. had she chosen to turn and look toward the familiar face, the champion would notice that he wore a casual long-sleeved red shirt; over that top was a black cardigan sweater. next, his bottom would consist of jet black slim-fitted jeans. lastly, for his footwear, he would have on casual red dress shoes.

"you ready to pay what you owe, hoenn's champion?" a chuckle followed as arian spoke, "you may be the new champion of hoenn, but you'll always be our very patron with the biggest tab in our casino." a hand would find itself acting as a shade upon his forehead, eying the ginormous creature that kept to itself. arian just had to ask, "wow, you explain that to me and i'll talk to big bro about clearing your debt..."

She sipped her coffee, tilting the cup far enough to hide her grimace at Arian's unexpected arrival.[break][break]

“You're still alive, huh?” The champion would dryly state, knowing that the tab was a reference to their gym battle from oh-so long ago. Its memory filtered into her mind like a slow drip, as it had felt like a lifetime ago. “I told you to run the damages through your insurance, alright? I ain't paying outta pocket.”[break][break]

The coffee was black and bitter, jarring to her senses. It had brewed for so long, it was more comparable to battery acid with its sting.[break][break]

“The big guy?” Bailey would turn her head to regard the distant shape of her Legendary. “He's with me.”[break][break]

A pause.[break][break]

“He's not the chatty type, so I'd keep your distance.” She would sip again, wondering how long this arrangement would last—Groudon's capture had come without a fight, without force. If the Legendary listened to her commands, it was only because he was letting her have her way.[break][break]

In other words, temporary.[break][break]

“Heard you moved to Mossdeep. How's that going?”

"haha, but then i lose my leverage to see the, and i quote, 'adorable biker chick'!" a inside joke between him and his eldest sibling. they were fond of the stories he heard of bailey. though, arian didn't see much to call adorable. she could get pretty violent if the situation called for it. "besides, i'm fond of you. it's never a dull moment when you're around." it was then he'd come to throw his attention back toward the groudon.

bailey, afterwards, would inquire about arian's new developments. before answering, he'd look back to gardevoir, "go and help heal some more citizens and pokemon, i'll be alright on my own." once gardevoir departed after receiving her assignment, he'd return his focus back on bailey. "honestly, i've been out of the region for a bit and missed a lot. i'm not sure as to why we moved to mossdeep, but i can only assume it's probably due to some personal assignment from the commissioner herself." what a time to return.

"i took a break for awhile only to return to a mess of things, and then i was informed about your promotion and now..." he'd look back toward the legendary creature, "you're walking around with something unknown. the league's okay with that? something this big with you could only spell trouble in the future."

“What are they going to do? Tell me to put him back?”[break][break]

She spoke flatly, unable to muster a single shred of consideration to the woes of disturbed sycophants.[break][break]

“It's too late for that bullshit,” and she sloshed the contents of her coffee, staring down into its void. So deep, she could barely discern her own reflection. “What can they do? Tell me I'm too negligent to own a Legendary? That people shouldn't?”[break][break]

She knew that strain of fanaticism, and smiled mockingly.[break][break]

“We're far past that.”[break][break]

With one last gulp, she would finish her coffee. Rather than walk to the closest sink, the Champion would touch one foot to the ground, and make the earth bend at her command.[break][break]

A small ledge, where she propped the cup, would rise to meet her hand.

and that was new. it was really new, and very surprising. he'd clap with praise, mesmerized by the sudden earth bending she had done. "well, they wouldn't be wrong about the first or second part," the last thing they needed was a raging drunk walking around with some prehistoric creature.

"considering you're champion, i have faith you'll make the right call!" he said with a smile, but had little belief in his words. whatever she did with the beast wasn't his concern. "besides," he'd examine her face, "something about you is definitely different. can't put my finger on it exactly, you're the old bailey but you're also not." maybe she did mature and just didn't wanna show it.

"i might just be overexaggerating, cause you're still the big headed bruiser," arian said with a shrug. if there's one thing that'll never change about cooper, it's her confidence. he felt sorry for the guy that'll marry that.

with curiosity, arian would ask, "so what are you gonna do next? you're at the top, what's your next goal?"

She side-eyed Arian, feeling the blister of his tease rub the wrong way.[break][break]

“Yeah, guess I'll just have to keep cleaning up messes and saving cities without any credit.” That was an attempt at sarcasm, but it ran too true for Bailey to fully dismiss. There were people in the League that felt that way.[break][break]

Maybe, just maybe, nobody should ever own a Legendary.[break][break]

But it felt too fucking good for her to care.[break][break]

She stared, dead-eyed at his praise. “Only Dahlia gets to butter me up like that. Fuck outta here with that shit,” and despite her words, her tone was more dismissive than combative.[break][break]

The Champion rolled back her shoulders, watching Groudon from afar as he seemed to finalize his work; lava hardening into a black streak, rich with heat and nutrients to canvas the landscape.[break][break]

With time, it would cool and meld.[break][break]

His inspection of her face would only make her scowl; the different Bailey more than aware that there had been a change.[break][break]

Maybe minor. Maybe massive.[break][break]

“My job is to get ready for the next hurdle.” In whatever shape it may take.

"haha, so combative even in the face of a compliment!" there was never a dull moment with her. with something as big as that in her possession, she had more than just herself to back up her words. everything had changed, he wondered how many more of these gigantic beings roamed about.

"just don't go all nicolas free on me, i still have some stuff i wanna do before you break hoenn y'know..." there were many more games he had left to play. he didn't want to brush with death so early. "all eyes are on you 'champion', and if you're gonna play the part..." he'd come snag onto her elbow, "we need to make you look it."

gardevoir had finally returned, done with providing medical care.

"let's take you shopping, my treat. i'll even buy you a beer if you can beat me in a game, you can tell me your new pet's name and what he likes to eat while we're at it." it's not like she had better things to do any--well, considering she's champion that may be an understatement. "besides, i wanna hear all about you and this whole 'pocooper' situation, what's that all about?"

Hoenn was in shambles, and this man was talking about shopping?[break][break]

Maybe, an earlier Bailey would have felt tempted by the offer. The thought that her job was disposable—that her time was her own—were the thoughts of a young cadet, in her early twenties, wanting nothing more than the chance to scrape it back for herself.[break][break]

They were the thoughts of someone that thought that they were replaceable. The thoughts of someone trying to be selfish with their time, acting with the knowledge that someone could easily fill their place.[break][break]

That was no longer the case.[break][break]

She stiffened at the grasp, then, recoiled with her lips parted to bare the white flash of teeth.[break][break]

“Does it look like I have time for that?”[break][break]

For the faintest moment, her breath condensed like steam. Rolling, like a boil, the only surviving Champion stood fast and squared her shoulders.[break][break]

“Listen, all that stuff you just said? Real nice, but there's more pressing bullshit for me to deal with,” she felt the stress, and felt it show. “And I'm not even close to being done. Not here, not anywhere.”[break][break]

“You wanna hear about some half-witted news story from some hack? Go bug the HNN. Ask them how they'll put a colorful twist on the next terrorist attack—how all the chunks of body parts will really worked to accentuate my features the next time I'm in somebody's arms.”[break][break]

A pause.[break][break]

“Or, better yet, when I'm in a coffin. We got a real good track record for that.”

the stress was getting to her. that was clear as day. it didn't take some psychologist to figure that out. arian wasn't the best person in question to serve as some shoulder to lean on. in fact, he could care less because it didn't exactly concern him. but he had respect for bailey, the best he could do was say what any decent person would.

taking a step back to face the angered brunette. arian would don a neutral expression. "considering i know you to be the type able to take the hard truth, i won't sugarcoat anything out of respect," arain started. "there will always be a problem for the league to deal with. same thing, different day." the blonde nonchalantly waved his hand lazily about, as if brushing a nonexistent bug away.

"just because you earned a new title doesn't mean you've taken on anymore responsibility than you've already had." to him bailey was still that same challenger back when she came to his gym. she was the gym person he had met during their first assignment together. she was the same brute that aided him in the battle against guzzlord.

"you've dealt with and worried about bigger things, if you let every situation you find yourself in stress you out. then, if i have to be honest, are you really cut out to be considered champion?" there was more than being good at battling that went into holding a well-respected title. that started with learning to have a cool head, "i'm not saying this to be mean, but you're a strong woman. something like this should bother you, but it shouldn't. you'll never be done with that 'pressing bullshit'."

to finish his longwinded lecture, he'd leave her with this, "anyway, the future's uncertain. you might die, you might not. honestly, i'm a little excited to see how you being champion will turn out. you can't save everyone. it's not your job alone anyway, it's all of ours. so don't think you're the only one dealing with this mess. if it gets too tough, why not come take a load off at the casino? we'll give you some nice drinks on the house." it's the least he could do. it may not be much, but it's something.

“Arian, why the fuck do I keep getting people saying this shit to me, when they don't get what's going on?” They were always missing the mark. It was a honest question—she seemed truly baffled.[break][break]

At least dahlia goode kept it simple. Kept it sweet. Said she could do it, and gave Bailey the keys to drive down a hell path of her own making.[break][break]

"What you said—it was nice, but that's not what's on my mind. It doesn't apply."[break][break]

She would take a step forward; tone low and controlled even if something burned beneath her ribs.[break][break]

“Listen, if I seem stressed, it's because I know damn well what I have to deal with. It's not the little things, Arian Coin. It's the fucking big things that I have to contend with—”[break][break]

A breath.[break][break]

“—And that I'm the most qualified to handle them.”[break][break]

She paused, then frowned.[break][break]

“Well, besides Lopez,” without him, she would be more fucked than she already was.[break][break]

In the distance, she could hear the churning; earth, displaced, scraping against itself as it manually shifted. The aftermath of such movement manifesting as a tremor beneath the very ground, rattling up her spine.[break][break]

“I'm not scared of any of it. I'm not hesitant about any of it. I don't have a single fucking regret about any of it—but I know what I have to do.”[break][break]

And it meant so much more than what loomed behind her.

cerulean orbs became more sharpened. arian neutral expression listened as she spoke. everything else around them was no longer important. he wanted to know.

"then help me understand." what were these ordeals she felt that only her and kyle were able to handle. "what is it that you have to do, champion?" it wasn't his place to pry, but how could he not? whatever she was keeping from him sounded promising. "what exactly are you hiding from me?"

whatever it is, it must be pretty important for her to seem anguished over this.

There was nothing to hide.[break][break]

If there had been anguish, it had already been compartmentalized. Stress could run itself into the emotions of passion; frustration was more true to what she felt, and what she breathed as these days passed.[break][break]

Bailey turned her attention away from Arian, and back to Groudon in the distance; an entire legendary, suddenly commanded by the raise of her pokeball.[break][break]

A single beam, condensing his mountain of might.[break][break]

He was recalled back to the capsule, resting in a vessel that was no different from the others that lined her waist.[break][break]

“I have to win.”
