Perhaps it was the war, or perhaps it was just the mail service being lazy. The boy couldn't figure for the life of him why they would leave him a notification that there was a package present for him at the Slateport branch rather than just delivering it. After taking a train and commuting up town by bus, he finally stood in front of the main postal office.

Normally he would have just flown, but after the wounds she received at Mauville, he didn't want to overwork Ravana any more than he needed to. After getting inside, the clerk informed him that his family back in Galar had sent a pokeball. It couldn't be delivered because there were a copious amount of forms to fill out for pokemon import.

And boy did he enjoy the small booklet of paperwork before finally receiving the little box. Stepping through the sliding doors of the post office, he sat his butt down on the nearest bench by the entrance into tear into the cardboard cage. He was quite intrigued as to why he would be sent a pokemon, and what pokemon it was. The forms hadn't specified, or maybe he just didn't bother reading them.

''Alright, he said, ball in hand. ''Lets see what we got here.'' Beaming the creature out just in front of him, a β unown came into existence. It's eye blinking wildly as it drank in its new surroundings. Andy arched an eyebrow. He had seen this pokemon before. Not just any unown, but this β one specifically, many many years ago when he was but a small child.

[attr="class","rolling-thread"][attr="class,"faction"]Baltoy were interesting pokemon, but they weren't really her style admittedly. She had recently gained one that seemed to enjoy her presence during her attempts to help push away a massive Claydol swarm when they were attempting to fix up many of Meteor Fall's more recent craters and war damage. Still, in her attempts to understand the species more, Ruby allowed it to follow her through town as she went about her daily chores. [break][break]

She had already gathered enough food for the week, packed away in her backpack. Next on her list, was to send a few postcards back home. Her parents were probably wondering what she had been up to lately. There was no way she was going to tell them everything, of course... Especially not participating in the war, they might not exactly approve. "What about you little guy?" Ruby spoke, turning to look at the pokemon floating and spinning behind her as she walked. "Got any family?" [break][break]

Predictably, it didn't really respond. It let out a soft cry of its own, but there was simply no reading the expressions on these pokemon. With a smile, Ruby sighed and gently rubbed his head. "Yeah, I bet. Loads and loads of ancient guys, huh?"[break][break]

As she approached the post office itself, her eyes couldn't help but drift over towards a small boy sitting on a bench. He himself didn't seem all too unusual, although the pokemon he just unleashed immediately caught her eye. An Unown. Ruby's interest was piqued right away, her collection of the pokemon had her develop quite a respect for them. They also didn't really speak much, but perhaps when they could spell out words they'd be more talkative... food for thought. [break][break]

Overhearing the question he asked out loud, Ruby spoke up. "Oh, um, pardon me for interrupting, but that's an Unown. Not unknown like we don't know... Oh, nevermind. It's just called Unown."

Blinking, Andy leaned to look around the pokemon at the stranger and her own little spinning top. The β turned as well, regarding her indifferently with its singular eye. His grandfather had always said answered his query about what type of pokemon with that: it's unkown. The thought had been in his head ever since that the elder Blackadder didn't know what it was either.

Now he realized he looked retroactively stupid. Or did he...? Maybe never asking but once didn't paint him as that ignorant. Chocolate eyes flicked from the unown to the girl and back. It didn't seem to either confirm or deny it through sound or action. It just stared, as it had like any of the other rare times he had seen it. Which made him ponder...

''Okay... So what does it do other than-'' He gestured to the casually floating thing- ''this.'' Rising he moved to stand at its side so he wasn't talking around it to the girl. ''Someone mailed it to me out of grandfather's old shit. But I don't know much about it, not even where he got it. It's not really done a damn thing any time I've seen it.''

She certainly wasn't expecting someone so young to be swearing so casually, but perhaps her rather secluded childhood in the woods simply protected her from a similar fate as a kid. Did livng closer to the main cities do this? She quickly shook her head, none of that was important. [break][break]

"That's, uh, well... debated! Unown are a fairly unique pokemon. After all, it looks like letters! Modern historians aren't really sure whether language, or the Unowns came first." She'd simply smile at the unblinking pokemon, the Baltoy she had been walking with slowly spinning around on the ground beside her. It seemed intrigued by its fellow ancient pokemon, but only just barely. [break][break]

"It's theorized that together, Unowns could potentially be really powerful! They can even sort of talk to each other. But, alone?" She paused, idly rubbing the back of their neck. Even with her collection, she hadn't really noticed any sort of strange power from them. Perhaps it truly was just, nothing more than a theory. "Alone, they can really only Levitate and use Hidden Power, which is admittedly unpredictable at best. They can't evolve, or learn other moves either... But they can stick to walls!"

But that truly was the extent of all that she knew. However, his statement certainly seemed to hold some strange wisdom to it. Not useless, just, well, their purpose really was unknown, just like they were.[break][break]

"Oh, pardon my manners. I should have introduced myself sooner. I'm Ruby, also from Galar! I know my accent isn't as strong as it used to be , I've been here in Hoenn for over a year now. And this-" She paused, turning to look down and point a hand at the Baltoy, who began to spin in place as attention was brought upon him. "Is a Baltoy! Tentatively named Tipsy, until I find a better name for them."[break][break]

Balancing carefully on one foot for a few moments, Tipsy eventually floated up into the air for a few moments, utilizng it's Levitate ability to just spin wildly without gravity slowing it down to pick up speed, before landing back down and zooming around Ruby's feet, which earned quite the giggle from her. "They are ground and psychic type! And have been around since ancient times as well! We even have like, cave paintings of these guys with ancient humans, but unlike Unown, they're pretty capable in combat. They evolve into Claydol too, a stronger Pokemon."[break][break]

"I'd offer a closer look, but, well, this one seems adamant to never stop moving."

[attr="class","rolling-thread"][attr="class,"faction"]It was indeed much like a top, but it was kind of quite cute, in it's own little way. Ancient toys and things like that had such a charm to them. After all, it was what kids played with for thousands of years before more modern toys were invented. It did cause her to wonder, however. There were modern man-made Pokemon, like Porygon... could any of these ancient pokemon have been created a long time ago too? The possibility certainly existed.[break][break]

"Oh, I don't know, honestly! Nobody really knows I guess. It isn't like anyone can just, go and ask, you know?" She'd chuckle quietly to herself, watching the Baltoy continue to spin. "Alright, Tipsy, calm down a bit, will you? Let our new friend get a good look at you." It ignored Ruby for a few seconds before she simply sighed and repeated herself in a firmer tone. "Tipsy. Relax." [break][break]

That certainly seemed to get their attention. The Baltoy would gradually slow down it's rapid spinning, finally turning to face and wobble back and forth on its point for a few seconds before simply levitating into the air. It's silent, unmoving face just looking at the boy for a while before it continues to wobble aloft in the air. [break][break]

Meanwhile, Ruby's attention was on the Unown. Her own gaze filled with intense curiosity, and almost certainly appreciation for the mysterious Pokemon. "You know, I actually collect Unown! I don't know, I think I just love a good mystery."

It seemed this Ruby had to argue with her baltoy as much as he did with his gengar. For how unexciting the unown was, at least it wasn't an untamed terror. The pokemon came to heel however and began to float in front of him. It made no noise, much like the unown. Leaning in, it looked ancient, as if it had been sculpted from clay like a pot.

''Oh?'' As Ruby explained her hobby of unown collecting Andy poked the baltoy gently, rubbing his fingertip across the surface. It felt like it was made of clay too, the cool grainy texture somewhat familiar. Having family that dabbled in archaeology meant he had seen, and despite the fact that he shouldn't have, touched plenty of old pottery.

''You said something powerful happens when you bring them all together? What happens?'' Ceasing his probing he looked up over his shoulder at the elder teen. It made sense that she had spoken to him in the first place. She wanted the unown he bet. To what end though? If she didn't really know, wouldn't it be like giving a toddler a loaded gun?

Sure, it only stared forwards, but there had to be a personality beneath that silent face. Maybe all it needed was a chance to have fun. "I don't know."[break][break]

Turning back to look at him, she witnessed him gently touching the Baltoy. Surprisingly, the Baltoy was remarkably comfortable with being touched. It simply seemed to bounce as if it was excited, attempting to press up against his hand. "All that I do know, is that little guy likes you. Honestly, I haven't seen it this calm since I caught it."[break][break]

Humming softly in thought, Ruby paused to think for a few seconds before she began to dig into her purse. Pulling out Tipsy's Pokeball, she continued. "You know? I consider myself a decent judge of character, and he kind of looks happier with you... I think. Here." She gently tossed him the Pokeball, nodding to herself. [break][break]

"Treat him well, huh? Baltoys can be a handful, but they're genuine little guys."

So she didn't know what happened. What if collecting them all caused the world to end? The nihilist in him would have actually found it amusing to be part of that. But he liked living enough to be adverse to a mystery death. If death came he wanted it to be quick. Old age looked terrifying, as did disease, or something else that was slow.

Turning his thoughts way from the morbid, the baltoy seemed pretty friendly. Different pokemon had varying preferences when it came to interaction with humans and other pokemon. Part of him was pleasantly surprised it didn't recoil away or zap him with some attack. As Ruby spoke again, the Galarian looked up, ceasing his prodding.

''What? You can't be serio-'' And then she tossed the pokeball right into his face. Losing his balance to fall onto his butt, the baltoy hopped back before bouncing in place, apparently amused by the interaction. The pokeball spun slowly on the ground nearby. ''Damn it! Why does no one in this region just hand shit to people!?''

"I'm so, so sorry about that. I guess I misjudged my toss." She'd awkwardly rub the back of her neck, nodding her head. "B-but uh... yeah, I was serious. Consider the little guy yours. I've honestly never seen him this calm."[break][break]

Aaaand now, she simply felt awkward. Ruby would continue to rub the back of her neck embarrassedly, trying not to focus too hard on it. It was one thing to accidentally hit a stranger like this, a whole different deal for it to be a kid. "You, uh, going to be okay?"

Slowly clambering to his feet, a hand rose to rub at his face. It came away to reveal no blood. It was doubtful there would even be a bruise, besides the one inflicted on his pride of course. Reaching to pick up the pokeball, it was tossed into the air and caught a time or two before he looked to the baltoy, who resumed his spinning.

''Yeah. I'll live.'' Pressing the pokeball into a pocket, another was produced and proffered (not thrown!) to the girl. The unown nearby seemed as indifferent as always. Granted, this was a family heirloom he was giving away, but his grandfather wasn't around to gripe ''It would likely never leave the pokeball if it kept it.'' A slight shrug.

''My grandfather would kill me for just handing it over like this, but that fucker's dead. Unless he got yamaskified like my uncle.''
