On the other side of a heavy-duty containment chamber, Gavin can barely hear the Corviknight's shriek of rage, but he takes an instinctive step back as a row of razor-sharp steel projectiles clatter against the chamber wall. A white-hot glow fades slow from the discarded feathers.[break][break]

In the blink of an eye, with unnatural speed, Corviknight slams itself against the barrier. Its beak glances off the sturdy material and Gavin dictates notes to his Rotom as the avian glowers at him.[break][break]

"Subject displays heightened aggression and exhibits incredible bursts of speed undocumented in its species..."[break][break]

Footsteps on the basement stairs lead Gavin to turn his head, a cold and analytic gaze softening as it settles upon her silhouette. He moves to close the distance between them, leaning in to brush his lips against hers. This close, she's bound to notice the dark bags accenting his amber eyes; he'd been up all night, again. His gaze smolders with the suppressed excitement of his research.[break][break]
"Morning, love. How'd you sleep?"

From upstairs, she can't hear the goings-on from the basement. There is a malicious energy, however, in the silence that seeps up the stairs. And there is a heaviness in her footstep and at her hip that seems to attract her to that silence. It is engulfing in its magnetism and she feels bile in the back of her throat that hadn't been there before.[break][break]

What light from the top of the stairs trickles in slowly, falling over each step slowly like a delicate woman's step.[break][break]

And his eyes turn to her as she makes her way down. She watches his expression turn from cold and calculating to soft and affectionate. She exhales silently through her nose, her attention peeling away from him to the chamber behind him. There is evidence of anger and pain in the scratches on the glass, in the fallen feathers on the other side of their barrier. [break][break]

Where she is solemn and perhaps a little strained by the darkness that extends behind him, he meets her halfway with barely-suppressed excitement. He hides it well, too well, and so she doesn't draw attention to it. She merely studies his face briefly as he speaks, this time to her.[break][break]

At times, Gavin feels he can read her like a book. Otherwise, as now, she is a mystery, and he cannot pierce beyond the golden veil of her gaze.

There's a stirring of anxiety in his gut, a callback to the last time she'd gifted him with something. He forces it aside. They have grown, since then, or so he likes to believe. His demeanor reflects curiosity rather than caution.

"Oh? Just a moment, then."[break][break]

He crosses the room in a few swift strides, palming an ordinary pokeball. Such an innocent thing to hold such an abhorrent creature as the one who shrieks at him from beyond a bulletproof barrier. There's something strange in his gaze as he presses the button on the capsule. The shadowed bird vanishes in a haze of light, and with it the conflict in Gavin's expression.[break][break]

He gestures to his Rotom, a silent command for it to wrap up and shut down, then turns his full attention to Emma.[break][break]

"What is it?"

Unlike the last time she had given him something, this one wasn't truly a gift. For her, it had been a burden, a heavy stone in her belly that she couldn't digest. The Pokeball is ice cold when she pulls it out. Her thumb brushes against the seal, though she makes a point not to press it.[break][break]

"One of my Pokemon turned into one of those beasts you study. I wanted you to have it, instead of me."[break][break]

She holds out the ball for him to take, and her expression is conflicted.[break][break]

There's something in the way she says it, beasts, that makes Gavin hesitate. It's not an inaccurate description for the savagery they often display. He's certain Lugia would kill him if it could. Yet it doesn't sit right.[break][break]

"Are you sure?" His brow furrows. He's quickly adapting to the knowledge that this something had not been something good, not to Emma. "Which of them was it? I know the bond is often severed, but they're still—" He stops himself short, realising that he's said too much already. He's given away that secret softness. Then, he relaxes, because it's her. "They're still Pokemon, Em."[break][break]

She looks so uncomfortable; it's her admission of trust that makes him reach out his hand, an invitation if she were certain to relinquish her burden.[break][break]

"I'll look after it, of course I will." He cants his head. "How did it...?"

Her response is sharp, sharper than intended, and she forces herself to relax and to hang her head aside in order to compensate, to appear less agitated. She knows he's trying to reason with her, provide her with a different perspective. [break][break]

She had seen what had come as a result of her hunger for power. What Mephisto had become, what beast, what horror, what demon.[break][break]

When he reaches for the Cryogonal's Pokeball she releases it immediately, pulling her hand back and away almost as if burned.[break][break]

"It was attacked by a Nihilego while I was running from it. Other Pokemon - and people - were not so lucky."[break][break]

It had protected her and she had been grateful, but her own fears clouded her judgment. She would be no good for the tainted creature now.[break][break]

He doesn't torture Emma with his thoughts; he's surely mentioned them many a time in his fervent ramblings of research.[break][break]

"Nihilego..." There's a morbid fascination in his tone as it clicks. "That's what happened to Lugia, as well. I wonder how similar—"[break][break]

But he's getting ahead of himself.[break][break]

"Have you discerned much of its new abilities, if any? Its change in temperament?"[break][break]

He's not familiar with Cryogonal as a species. When he releases it into the chamber, it surprises him when it doesn't lash out. Frost creeps along the barrier, reminding him of Sandslash. Of all of them, of the ones who hadn't survived.

The twitch of his lip is not missed, but it is not returned. There is a swath of unspoken words that she's already heard him speak that lay dormant on his face. Things he wishes to reassure her, and things she cannot let herself believe.[break][break]
But there is no mistaking the giddy excitement that slips from his mouth. He puts together pieces of a puzzle she hadn't even really known about, mentioning Lugia and lingering on the mention of this Nihilego. She stiffens as he cuts himself off, interjecting with a slew of questions that she can't possibly know the answers to.[break][break]

"No. It still listens, if that's what you're worried about."[break][break]

He releases it into the chamber and the Pokemon lingers at the glass, eyes on Emma. There is almost a mournful expression on its face, but she can't say it ever looked any different.[break][break]

Stuck fast between his distress at Emma's discomfort and his own lust for knowledge, Gavin's expression remains in conflict as he shakes his head. "I'm not worried. I was able to pacify even my Sandslash, and it's one of the more aggressive ones I've encountered. It is unusual that you've have no trouble with it at all..."[break][break]

Was it Emma, or the Cryogonal itself? He remembers, then, that this was not her only shadow Pokemon.[break][break]

"Did you have a similar experience with — Mephisto?" There's a brief pause as he recalls its name. He's never named his own Pokemon. His barrage of questions continues. "Did this one have a name?"[break][break]

It's watching Emma, he realises, and there's something in it's expression that tugs in Gavin's gut like sorrow.

Emma doesn't respond, instead choosing to avoid eye-contact. Her attention is drawn by the Crygonal's fixed gaze. It chills her to her core, and she takes a step back and away from the both of them with a subtle half-step. [break][break]

But then Gavin brings up Mephisto, and Emma feels her jaw clench. She puts her hands into her jacket pockets to hide the way her fists clench, fingers digging into soft skin. [break][break]

"No. This one doesn't have a name."[break][break]

Her Pokemon didn't have names - only the few that she chose to keep close to her. Naming them had been a necessity in order to keep them under control, differentiate them from others of their species.[break][break]

She refused to see it as anything deeper than that.[break][break]

Why name some, but not others? The confusion presents itself in the furrow of his brow, but Gavin does not voice it. She's upset, tense, and he finally detaches enough from his own excitement to be cautious in his approach.[break][break]

He signals to his Rotom phone. "Pokedex." It rattles off a few entries, including something about their inability to handle warm climate. "Adjust the temperature in the chamber accordingly."[break][break]

Frost forms thick across the barrier as the interior turns frigid. Though Cryogonal were one of the harder Pokemon species to read, Gavin hopes it's less agitated without the threat of vaporizing. His hypothesis that it's docile state had anything to do with the conditions inside the testing chamber is disproven, however, when it continues to drift impassively with its gaze on Emma.

Exasperation is thick on her tongue, and she glances away, away even from the chamber as the glass frosts. She can hear it, even through the thick glass layers separating them. She can hear it's mournful whistling, so soft, so quiet.[break][break]

The agitated swaying as a result of the heat subsides, but the Pokemon remains quiet and unassuming. It's attention never strays from the woman, though it seems that that attention is unwelcome.[break][break]

Though the glass is too thick for the chill to bleed into the lab itself, gooseflesh rises along Gavin's arms at the sharpness of her tone. She looks away from him and it's everything he can do not to sigh. It's as if he can sense the fracture before it happens.[break][break]

Emma returns her gaze to his, but her expression is far-away, nearly unreadable. There is conflict in her eyes, in the sharp line of her lips. Gavin repeats his promise to look after it, and she knows what he says is true, but that truth is not reflected in her heart. [break][break]

He presses the issue beyond what she's comfortable with, and her response is to step away from him, from the Cryogonal.[break][break]

"I'm fine, Gavin. Leave it be."[break][break]

She does not hesitate to move away and back to the stairs, to take a breath and separate herself from a conversation she wasn't ready to have.[break][break]
