route 102 was feeling several degrees colder than it usually was, even in the winter. the hail falling from the sky would usually be cause for concern, even in december.

for mcflurry, it was just a sign that she was doing work.

specifically, practice. her alolan vulpix needed training, being younger and less experienced than her other pokemon, and mcflurry always did do things traditionally.

(and if the hail was a little harder today, it was because her abomasnow stood to her side, as a second supervisor. in case a larger pokemon arose.

and if mcflurry seemed a little more villainous today, causing snow in an otherwise warm route, well.

she'd just exhale icy steam from her teeth, looking every bit like her glalie. a true villain-of-the-week.)

Hendrix felt shivers down his spine as the temperature quickly dropped all around him. He can almost hear his bones creak with each step as he slowly froze over – his teeth ceaselessly chattering like an old novelty toy from the 90’s.

”What the hell is going on in Hoenn lately? I swear it’s like the second coming of the Ice Age…” he mutters begrudgingly to himself, unsure whether to laugh or cry at his predicament.

Regardless, he can’t seem to escape the cold and unfortunately, he doesn’t have his suit or his Heat Rotom equipped to combat it.

The ex-Interpol Officer tugs at his leather jacket, hunching his shoulders together to retain his body heat as he follows the road with only the thought of finding another Rotom to add to his arsenal though he’s unsure whether or not he’ll find with the hail and mist fogging his field of view.

Squinting his eyes, he can make out the silhouette of a feminine figure standing alongside a hulking shadow… He immediately thinks back to his encounter with an Abomasnow and rushes outwards. ”H-Hey, are you alright?” he asks with a tinge of anxiety in his voice.

Yet as he makes his approach – only to see the frightening and twisted visage of the girl’s Glalie-like expression, he can only let out a shrill of a scream like he’s just witnessed a ghost.

mcflurry's alolan vulpix had just gotten done blasting a blizzard at a yamper (making the weather even worse) — and she subtly tossed a poke ball at it underhand before turning to someone talking to her.

just that moment, she decided to exhale. with the frosty breath, the bags under her eyes, and her almost-shimmering blue pupils that had to be the result of some sort of mega-energy runoff, it was no wonder the man screamed.

mcflurry didn't notice any of the above, so she just thought the guy was being rude. a few months ago, she would have apologized. nowadays, though...

"g-g-got a problem? are we having a mc... issue? i do-do-don't appreciate that sort of thing... hhh..."

she grit her teeth, looking angry. her eyes flashed, her brows furled, and a blast of evaporating breath from between her clenched teeth, looking like a steam engine in terms of volume and cloudiness.

her abomasnow behind her cracked its knuckles, letting out a low, intimidating growl as it started stepping up to the man.

Hendrix’s gaze shifts from the ghastly woman and onto the hulking Abomasnow behind her. The sound of ice cracking and the yeti’s display of intimidation grounds him to reality as he realizes that the petite woman in front of him is in no danger at all.

His muscles tense as he shifts backward, flinging both arms up in front of his chest to deescalate the awkward misunderstanding. He chuckles nervously as his expression distorts with a somewhat ugly smile.

”H-hey now, let’s just calm down…” The former officer takes a step back to put some distance between him and the hulking Abomasnow. ”I was just worried that you might be in trouble considering the unexpected snow… and the fact that there’ve been reports of Abomasnow attacks…”

He adverts his eyes away from the girl as his face slightly flushes red from embarrassment. ”I just didn’t expect that you’d look like that one ghost that crawls out of t.v.’s…” he whispers quietly to himself.

mcflurry let out another disgruntled sigh at that second insult, but she didn't feel quite as murderous, given the guy was trying to look out for her. these days, that was rarer than ever.

"hhh... i-i guess. d-don't mind that, it's - the cold just does that to me..."

mcflurry grunted, eyeing another figure popping out from the grass behind hendrix. big, bright, orange - a rotom.

callously, mcflurry pointed it out over hendrix's shoulder, giving a frosty little shit-eating grin, small clouds puffing from the corners of her smile.

"you've got a ghost o-over your mcshoulder, scaredy cat..."

(her vulpix enthusiastically looked for other targets, and her abomasnow watched. the hail was brewing, indeed.)

Both of Hendrix’s ears perk at the mention of a ghost… wait, mc…shoulder? He finally catches onto the woman’s strange speech impediment, but before he can linger and question it, he slowly turns his head around to spot the familiar sight of a Rotom.

His eyes glisten and his expression beams with excitement as he licks his thumb before pulling out a pokeball. ”Thanks! You’re a swell girl, you know that?”

He tosses a pokeball, letting loose an Incineroar who lets out a loud and mighty roar. He points over at the Rotom, and with a quick nod, the wrestling tiger charges forward, stretching out both arms as it lariats straight into the ghost.

Seeing an ample opportunity, the former interpol officer throws a second pokeball at the rotom, letting the ball devour the ghost like some sort of ghost catching camera.

The Incineroar quickly brings Hendrix back a pokeball as he turns back to the woman – the fear no longer lingering in his expression. ”Thanks~ You're like a Delibird delivering presents. I was looking for one of these.

the woman's teeth chattered as she sighed, shoving her hands in her coat in what seemed to be an attempt to keep her body warm. which is a bit of a paradox, given she's the one causing the cold.

"h-h-h-h-hhh. it's f-funny you mcsay that — hm?"

all of a suddenly, mcflurry's head swiveled to see a wild jolteon body checking her alolan vulpix in a quick attack. just like that, the woman's expression hardened, and her abomasnow watched icily as her orders were barked.

"aurora veil! then b-b-blizzard."

after an almost mystical show of lights wrapped around the vulpix's body, the tiny fox yowled as the winds became more frigid, more violent — and the jolteon, caught unaware, was suddenly pelted in a complete snowstorm.

by the time the attack settled and the word was no longer white, the jolteon was revealed to be frozen solid. mcflurry tossed a quick poke ball at it, sighing.

as her vulpix hobbled back looking worse for wear, the dark-clothed trainer released a delibird, who gave a parental squawk before using present.

the gift exploded into a glowing flash of energy, and just like that, the alolan vulpix was fine.

"...t-tell me if your pokemon need healing, too, i guess."

Hendrix’s heart nearly melts hearing the woman’s offer to heal his pokemon, completely forgetting his frightful first encounter with her. He slips his hands into his jackets pocket to keep them warm as he watches Mcflurry make quick work of the Jolteon.

He lets out an impressed whistle. ”You’re pretty solid at battling.” the ex-Interpol officer compliments through chattered teeth, hugging his arms tightly together as the sudden snow storm washes over them.

Desperate to keep himself warm, he casually waddles his way closer to the petite woman. ”I’m Hendrix, by the way. Sorry for before.”

The closet vigilante quietly wallows in regret for not having come in his alter-ego. At least he’d still be warm with the Rotom in his suit…

Seeing his trainer struggle to keep warm, the Incineroar comes in close with both arms spread open as it quickly wraps its large arms around him, giving Hendrix a massive bear hug. Almost feeling the urge to struggle free, the red-head controls himself as the warmth from the fiery tiger manages to slowly heat him up.
