Rustboro was hosting its annual Chinese new year festival a little early and a lot longer this year. This was partly due to the idea that the people of Hoenn needed such delightful distractions to help them forget the fresh scars the war had left behind. Remiel, of course, had put forward a hefty sum towards the finances needed to host this nearly week-long celebration.[break][break]

The city of stone was decorated all over in hues of gold, red, and white. Banners hung from lampposts and against the edges of rooftops. Red and white confetti rained from the sky as activity tents all over buzzed with commotion and joy. Children crafted paper masks and played games for prizes. Food vendors hollered over one another in an attempt to lure in the most customers. Performers of all kinds graced stages at every end of the block: drumming and dancing and reading poetry to dazzled audiences.[break][break]

Solitary, as usual, Remiel had taken the day off to enjoy the festivities himself. Straight out from the embassy at the fringes of the city, the ambassador made a bee-line for the first dumpling vendor he could find. Now he sat against a brick fence beneath a large oak tree, people-watching as he ate away at the dough-like bun to consume the savory meat inside.[break]

Where the hell was that Magikarp fishing booth?

He’d heard rumors that there were more of them all over the place, and since he’d missed actually catching the little shits, was determined to look for at least one city that had the danged thing.

Since the ‘winter wonderland’ hadn’t been cleared out of Fortree just yet, he’d gone on quite literally a wild goose chase looking for a city that had something similar to that one event he’d been hanging around rather religiously previously.

Lilycove? Nope.

Mauville? Close, but not quite—although there was a huge-ass shiny Gyarados dance there.

Petalburg? Too quiet!

His last guess was Rustboro.

Hoping he didn’t look too out of place, he was eating some dumplings out of a paper tray—not too spicy, not too sweet, just the right amount of soy sauce—where the hell was that stupid booth?!

Earl Grey, returning from his successful quest for more dumplings, was the first to take notice of the familiar gym leader. It encircled the lad in a swift twirl, chiming out with a clinking of laughter like teacups being gently tapped against one another. Behind it, a white bag full of dumplings sagged in tow, kept aloft by the pink Sinistea's ghostly telekinesis.[break][break]

It was the familiar chime of laughter that drew Remiel's attention instantly, looking at them from a mere nine meters away. Somewhat happy to find a familiar face in the sea of strangers, Remiel finishes the last of the dumpling in his hands before rising from his seat and walking over. He tosses his trash in a nearby bin, then claps his hands clean as he greets his friend.[break][break]

"Alexei, pleasure seeing you here." He remarks, extending his hand for a shake afterwards. "I see you've partaken in the dumplings as well. Delicious, aren't they?" The young man continues, taking the bag from his Sinistea as he eyes Alexei's own.[break]

Thank fuck he was tall enough to peek over the head of the crowd—in what general direction did he have to go, just to find that stupid fishing booth?!

After popping another dumpling into his mouth, he heard something—and then saw it. A pink-tinged tea cup—although there was something that threw him off, hairs standing up on the back of his neck. Thankfully, he was busy with the dumpling in his mouth he didn’t notice the Ghost-type until after he heard a familiar voice.

“Fancy seeing you here,” he remarked, extending his free hand to return the gesture. “Also, surprised—Miss Isra isn’t with you?” he teased a few moments later. Surely she was out there, somewhere—probably creeping behind someone and chasing them down, kind of like how they did in the Ren Faire previously.

“One of the vendors tried to pile enough chili to make me breathe fire when I was handed this. Thank hell I managed to stop them from doing so,” he chuckled as he speared another dumpling and popped it into his mouth. Mmm, salty deliciousness.

“Have you seen the Magikarp fishing booth around here? I heard there was a booth, but out of all the cities I’ve checked so far I haven’t found it yet.”

Earl Grey seems insulted that Alexei doesn't notice him... or perhaps even remember him? He's not as rude to press on the topic, though, and simply takes his place hovering over his master's shoulder as the two talk. Alexei's mention of Lady Isra, however, prompts the possessed teacup to cast a solemn look at his master.[break][break]

"She's... away. Business with her family, I believe." He answers, though in all honesty he does not know. In fact, he was hoping to ask Alexei after her whereabouts. But the conversation moves on, and he finds himself comfortable with following it.[break][break]

"Chili? Hm... you and I must have gone to different vendors..." The royal remarks, peeking into his bag to find no chili or soy sauce. He only returns his gaze to Alexei when inquires after the whereabouts of a certain game. "Oh? I believe I have, yes... it's right beside the lion dancing stage. Come, I'll walk with you." He offers, gesturing for him to follow.[break][break]

"Did you really travel all this way for a Magikarp game, Alexei? How quaint."[break]

“Aww, I know she wouldn’t want to miss any of this for the world,” he gestured with the toothpick he was holding. There was only one dumpling left, and it was dealt with a few moments later.

“Yeah,” he muttered around the last mouthful before swallowing, “I got this at the edge of the city. Seemed to hawk everything that can breathe fire,” he snickered before finding a trash can and dropping the empty paper tray within its depths.

As for the Magikarp fishing booth—

He let out a guffaw.

“See, I’ve been to three other cities already, looking for the damned thing. You’d expect Lilycove to have it since they’re closest to the water, but they have fire dancers over there instead. Mauville had a huge-ass Gyarados-dancing conga line running through the streets. Petalburg is more on the quieter side—visiting nearby shrines and all that.”

Yes, he was basically itching to fish again. Could anyone blame him? He had a score to settle with that fucking golden ‘karp.

“I have—unfinished business with a certain elusive golden Magikarp that has evaded me for far too long,” he explained.

A year ago, the two had met on a lonely street in Lilycove. And, shortly after that, Isra had attended the Northern Lights Festival with him. So Alexei's remark had a great deal of truth in it. And, in a way, seeing this celebration flourishing so well was a rather bittersweet thing for Remiel to see. Particularly because she wasn't here to enjoy it with him.[break][break]

He doesn't respond to the remark, however, and instead uses the excuse of eating another bare dumpling as Alexei moves on. "I'll have to visit this chili cook before the celebrations are over, then. That sounds most appetizing."[break][break]

As they walk and talk, the young royal takes modest and neat bites of his dumpling while listening to the blonde's journey for this Magikarp game. He's forgotten how free and loose Alexei is with his vocabulary. He finds it ever so refreshing, to the point where he smiles a little wider than he has in a long while.[break][break]

"Oh, really? A certain golden Magikarp, you say? Should I be worried? Is this the 'white whale' to your 'Captain Ahab', hm?" He jokingly inquiries, briefly turning away to regard the puppet show they pass.[break]

“I swear, some of the hawkers love piling chili flakes and chili oil on everything they sell. I barely got away with the soy sauce as it is,” he chuckled.

At the mention of the Magikarp fishing booth, he snickered.

“You could say that, yes. I’ve had a score to settle with that stupid fish. It’s been going on for some years now, because they said if one reels in a golden Magikarp, good luck and fortune will shine down upon that person for the next year.”

It was a tradition that had started exactly two years ago—no, even more at that point. Ever since he’d arrived in Hoenn all those years ago, he’d always attended these New Year celebrations. And never seemed to catch that stupid golden ‘karp.

"You're speaking about... an actual fish? And not just some plastic toy?" The prince asks as they navigate their way through the crowd. "I know Magikarp can live for years, but I've never heard of one holding a personal grudge for an individual person."[break][break]

Remiel wasn't a superstitious man either... at least, not without good reason. And he found it somewhat difficult to believe Alexei had been marred by a lack of good fortune for so long. Surely, he thought, there had been plenty of good in the man's life as well. Or was he the type to focus and amplify the bad rather than count his blessings?[break][break]

Before long, they came upon the fishing game in question and Remiel made away to allow the man to take a step forward. Eating his dumpling once more, the ambassador would watch and see what transpired next with great scrutiny. Perhaps the golden Magikarp wouldn't prove so elusive today. Perhaps there had never been a golden Magikarp in the pool at all.

“Yes. It’s an actual fish—and there are also others who have tried catching it whenever the festival booth would appear. Only, no luck. There’s also other kinds of colored Magikarp as well… I saw a pink-spotted one last year, along with a white-flecked one. There’s more than the usual standard orange kind of Magikarp that exist, apparently.”

Yes, it was time to settle the score once and for all with that stupid fish.

Seeing a familiar face headed towards the booth, Alexei, chuckled.

“See that girl with the fishing rod? She’s one of the regulars who frequents the booth whenever it appears during these celebrations. She’s been trying her hardest to catch the damned thing, too. Closest she got was the blue-tinged ‘Karp that had a white spot on its forehead,” he explained.

Ohh, that golden Magikarp had so many connotations for those frequent fishers who sought out the booth on a yearly basis. In his case it was a secret wish for his personal health as well.

“You should see the crowd when we get there. I’ll introduce you to some of the frequent fishers, too.”
