As he ducked his head beneath booby trap arrows and leapt over gaps where one slip meant certain death, Remiel Calcifet wondered how Eva Morales was faring. Had it been wise to leave her alone? Something in this tomb (or, perhaps, the tomb itself) was making its visitors disappear, after all. Visitors who all thought they had been capable enough to navigate it and return home safely.[BREAK][BREAK]

Hubris was a habitual plague in his family dynasty. The exiled prince did not plan to fall victim to it simply because he had years of experience spelunking in ancient places. And, despite having proven herself capable on many occasions, he could not help but feel a modicum of worry for the good doctor regardless.[BREAK][BREAK]

Upon reaching the sun-shaped gateway to his prize (and getaway), the sand pouring from the walls and ceiling has almost reached his knees. Trudging through to reach it, Remiel issues a command to his Armarouge. ”Quick! Open it with PSYCHIC!” And quickly TELEPORTS to the shrine holding the golden orb idol the moment the opportunity presents itself.[BREAK][BREAK]

What he has failed to take notice of until right that moment, however, is the sarcophagus seemingly pinned to the ceiling above. He turns up to it just in time to see it open its wild red eyes, spawning a set of ghostly arms before unleashing a ghostly roar. It is the largest and most ornate COFAGRIGUS he has ever seen.[BREAK][BREAK]

The archaeologist wades through the sand filling the main chamber with great effort, his black hair wildly uncombed as he turns to and fro for any sight of Eva. Behind him, the chaotic sound of battle follows close by. Galahad is holding off the pharaoh spirit as long as it can but struggling against its bewildering might.[BREAK][BREAK]

Casting a lightning stiletto at the statue of Horus, Remiel teleports upon it in the blink of an eye, clinging to the Talonflame head with one hand while holding the golden sun totem with the other. ”Eva?! Is that you?!” He calls out, hearing another commotion down the opposite hallway. ”I’m placing my totem on the pedestal! We just need yours!”[BREAK][BREAK]

The archaeologist replies, tracing his fingers over seemingly freshly carved hieroglyphs on a pillar. "Certainly not enough time to restore this site to such a magnitude of excellence..." He adds, equally awed as he is suspicious of their surroundings. Could he be wrong? Was the culprit they were chasing a benefactor of some sort to the temple? Too many questions, too little answers.[BREAK][BREAK]

Reaching to the side of his pack, Remiel pulls out a pick hammer of considerable size and hands it over to Eva. "I take Horus, you take Nephthys?" He suggests with a nod and a bit of daring in his eyes as he acknowledges each path. "You'll be looking for a silver idol— about yay big." The royal adds, forming a spherical shape with his hands no larger than a cantaloupe.[BREAK][BREAK]

"The moon."

[BREAK]

Suddenly, a disgruntled churning begins to reverberate throughout the stone walls of the tomb. It stops for a moment... then, as if determined to shock them, the entire tomb violently quakes before a steady stream of sand pours out of cracks in the ceiling. "Seven hells... looks like we're on a timer, Eva! Let's move it!" He exclaims, breaking off before departing down his hallway.[BREAK][BREAK]

"I'll see you back here in a minute, yeah?!"

"I knew that most of the legends I'd studied in archaeology had been real before that, but... to see one of the CREATION TRIO in our reality. That was something I could never forget. That was when I truly knew there was something special about HOENN." He adds, looking above them now as that primordial silhouette darts overhead.[BREAK][BREAK]

Was it actually the Renegade Pokémon up there or something else? Things worked differently in the Distortion World. That much was apparent. For all he knew, what they perceived as Giratina was simply a manifestation of energy on the other side of the veil. Or, instead, perhaps something ancient and still unknown to the human species.[BREAK][BREAK]

He was as thrilled as he was terrified.[BREAK][BREAK]

"How do we get off this island? The only trail here leads... up."

The shadows for each Calcifet stepped forward and, in the darkness and the dampness of that place, became like living things with sharp-toothed grins and manic eyes. Each was a caricature of the other: the one that approached Elise was a Remiel doppelganger, and the one that approached Remiel looked like Elise. Yet the uncanny valley could not be ignored.[BREAK][BREAK]

The pupils in their supposed 'eyes' did not move. Their very eyes seemed affixed in place as they reached out with claw-like hands to try and grab the royals. A scream rings out throughout the hallowed corridors. Remiel isn't sure if that was Elise or something else further down the hallway. Nevertheless, this prompts him and Saragosa into action.[BREAK][BREAK]

The Garchomp starts by shining an intensely bright SPOTLIGHT onto the doppelganger. However, its eyes shine like rubies and end up momentarily blinding them instead. As the thing that looks like Elise wildly claws out and screeches, the Illumina dragon grabs Remiel and uses its sensors to navigate the archaeological site without needing its vision.[BREAK][BREAK]

Knowing the shape of Saragosa, Remiel blindly mounts his dragon and holds on for dear life as he buries his face against her neck. "Track down Elise! The real Elise! And let's leave this forsaken place for the time being!" He urges.[BREAK][BREAK]

A hasty DRAGON RUSH sends his Dragonair mount slithering swiftly down the corridor to catch up to Eva Morales and the Kabutops she rides. "Did I ignite it too early? You said 'blow it up'!" Remiel responds over the loud rumbling that reverberates all around them. A chaotic roar that, coincidentally, had masked the sound of Eva's disagreement with the idea afterward.[break][break]

"Regardless, at least the explosion bought us some time! We need to barricade the tunnel ahead before the flood breaks through and catches up to us!" Remiel urges his companion, sharply bringing his draconic mount to a stop before sliding off its back. "STEEL or ROCK-type moves should do well." He adds, reaching for another Luxury Ball at his belt before turning to her.[break][break]

"You got anything with that kind of power?"

As they prepare to head off, however, a daunting realization settles in. "Where exactly are we?" He mutters, looking around to see that they are on an impossibly small floating island of some sort. The only path he sees ends in a steep incline where the trees and bushes seem to hang sideways, defying gravity unlike anything he'd ever seen before.[BREAK][BREAK]

Daring to take a few steps toward the edge, the royal peers down at a spiraling abyss filled with fog, more islands scattered throughout, and the debris from said islands. He grimaces at the thought of their Pokémon having fallen but doesn't let Ollie see that. "I can't see any way off thi—"[BREAK][BREAK]

Without warning, a shockingly large shadow streaks by below them. If it had been just that, Remiel might not have been so startled. But, whatever that being was, it seemed to have made contact with their floating island below. The ground beneath their feet quakes as a result, and the Exacting nearly falls off the edge before stumbling backward, wide-eyed and stammering as the island settles down.[BREAK][BREAK]

"I-It can't be... I think I know where we are." He says, shifting his shocked look toward his ranger captain. "The DISTORTION WORLD."[BREAK][BREAK]

"I'm not a cheap man. And I don't work with amateurs. I come to you with an understanding that you're neither of those things." He assures her, nodding toward the aforementioned libation. "If you're a connoisseur of wine, then you're in luck. I happen to be a collector." And a former vintner, too, but she didn't need to know that.[BREAK][BREAK]

Remiel slowly awakens to island birds singing just outside the window. And, just like every morning, he reaches out to caress a woman that isn't there. Only this time the act finds purchase as his arm wraps around Leilani Ka’uhane before she sleepily greets him.[BREAK][BREAK]

"Good morning..."

[BREAK]

The exiled prince mutters, keeping his eyes closed for the moment as he savors their shared warmth beneath the sheets a little longer. The sunlight that filters past the half-closed curtains paints their bodies in a heavenly light as they lay in blissful silence for a moment. Despite not being the woman he'd longed for all this time, his newest liaison had sparked something in him.[BREAK][BREAK]

"Last night was... amazing." The royal finally says with a smile, shifting a bit closer to her and unintentionally burying his nose in her hair. A bit muffled now, he continues. "I suppose this is the part where we part ways and never see each other again?"[BREAK][BREAK]

Not that he wanted that, of course.[BREAK][BREAK]

His playful tone said as much.

Adrenaline pumps in as their mounts propel them down the cavernous depths in a literal rush. Before too long, however, their respective Pokémon begin to lose steam as the flood of purple poison closes in behind them. "Eva! We're not going to make it at this rate!" Remiel warns, looking over his shoulder at the tidal wave threatening to devour them.[break][break]

The woman holds it above her head proudly, beak pointed upwards. While the man holds it at his feet piously, beak pointed downward.[BREAK][BREAK]

At the center of this chamber, a platform awaits them.[BREAK][BREAK]

"As above so below... an Orrenian creation myth." Remiel mutters.

Taking a look around, however, it is clear that a deep confusion has begun to settle in. "This chamber... wasn't here when I last visited." The archaeologist remarks, slowing to a stop beside a stone pillar before gently running a hand across it. "And everything looks so... pristine?"[BREAK][BREAK]

Remiel’s speed remains unmatched within it but seems to diminish further from his planted standard. Nevertheless, he sprints forward to try and close the gap.[BREAK][BREAK]

”Who are you to lecture me on consequences?!” He exclaims, charging a large lightning bolt in his right hand before casting it like a javelin at his opponent. ”Who are you to dictate where my anger should strike?!”[BREAK][BREAK]

Having underestimated the concussive force of a nearby psychic blast, however, he suddenly finds himself flung sideways as a result. But, just before he hits the wall and cracks open his skull, the royal teleports and reappears right in front of Neon.[BREAK][BREAK]

”MY ANGER BURNS FOR YOU!” He roars, gripping the scientist by his collar before charging his arm and casting him upward through a hole in the ceiling.[BREAK][BREAK]

Almost immediately, he spawns another lightning stiletto between his fingers, intending to give Neon chase in the skies above. Only a call from Atalanta gives him pause.[BREAK][BREAK]

"My ADMIN! We need that power source now!"[break][break]

Suddenly, his rage splits with shock at the sound of that title. And, while it serves to redirect his attention to the ultimate purpose at hand, it nonetheless stuns the exiled prince to his core. After all this time… is that still what he was to his loyal ‘defectors’?[BREAK][BREAK]

Was he just TEAM ROCKET rebranded?[BREAK][BREAK]

Would he never truly be free?

He snaps out of it before too long, nods, and casts the stiletto upward. Rather than strike an airborne Neon in the storm above, however, Remiel mounts Zekrom and guides the Black Yin through the gigantic swinging of cable-like limbs.[BREAK][BREAK]

And, when they have a clear shot at the Galarian Articuno, they take it.[BREAK][BREAK]

Remiel almost expected a concrete answer to explain her loyalty to Team Rocket. However, he knew better than most that such reasons were often muddied by a multitude of other factors. Particularly when it concerned inherently good people born into circumstances that compelled them to be otherwise.[BREAK][BREAK]

Had he ever truly come to grips with why Isaac Merlo or bryan delarosa had remained loyal to Team Rocket for so long? No, not completely. And, though he didn’t consider himself inherently good as they used to be, he was still his father’s son. Or, in other words, someone who, in their heart of hearts, should have known better.[BREAK][BREAK]

”I was raised in a world framed by constant expectations. A world where choice was made to seem like an illusion. Ironically, in breaking free from it, I chose to join Team Rocket to try and carve my own path.” He responds beneath the shelter and shade of their shared umbrella.[BREAK][BREAK]

But the venom in her following inquiry does not go unnoticed. He meets her gaze with a nonchalant look. Despite their physical closeness, the royal exudes the impression that he’s more detached than ever.[BREAK][BREAK]

Naia didn’t know anything about his family. Not really. Though it wasn’t her fault either. In the brief time that they’d been close together, Remiel had kept details about his family, its history, and its current dynamic, relatively close to his chest.[BREAK][BREAK]

”Hoenn’s Team Rocket wasn’t exactly what it is today when I first joined. The organization was a beacon to all those who wished to escape their past and make a notable difference in the world. It promised the strength and resources needed to do so.” He explains, pausing to lift his free hand and gently shift some strands of hair away from her angelic face.[BREAK][BREAK]

In the crystals ahead, shadows seem to dance.[BREAK][BREAK]

They take various shapes. Some are rather simple: claws, fangs, and teeth belonging to some indiscriminate figure. Others seem to mimic the dragons etched upon the walls of the ruins. Saragosa growls when she discerns a glimpse of a Garchomp's shadow darting through the crystals.[BREAK][BREAK]

"They're not real," Remiel warns her as she tries to beam the shadows away with her light. But she only manages to nearly blind themselves when the crystals in the cave reflect that light. The crown prince sighs after wincing and shielding his eyes with one hand. "Something is playing tricks with us. Let's keep going and meet up with Elise."[BREAK][BREAK]

His footsteps take him farther down the hallway as Saragosa begrudgingly stands at the cave entrance. However, before too long, she paces off to catch up to her master and continue providing illumination. At the end of the cave corridor, they meet at a junction surrounded by stone pillars and sculptures of Draconid priests long gone.[BREAK][BREAK]

Remiel turns to and fro, squinting at the shadows past Saragosa's light until he recognizes the silhouette of a woman approaching.[BREAK][BREAK]

But something doesn't feel right.[break][break]

"Elise? Is that you?"
