Standing before Slateport gym Noelani gave a small stretch before speaking to his partner “I know we talked about it but you ready for today Wikolia?”

The Vulpix immediately responded with an offended bark prompting him to only chuckle, yeah she was ready. Ever since coming to Hoenn the gym circuit had been on his mind and after getting acquainted with the city he decided it was time to try and challenge the local gym. He heard rumors it had been closed for period of time but after a call Noelani had been able to sign up well enough so maybe that period had ended or at least they were open to some challenges.

Deciding he had wasted enough time with stray thoughts the alolan just gave a nod to his pokemon before entering the gym proper. Looking around the lobby his eyes quickly zeroed onto the receptionist desk and the woman standing behind it. Seeing as the gym required proper identification, he had come without gumming it up with weird disguises and eye-catching clothes. He was even using his proper name and id, which was squeaky clean despite his past.

Walking confidently Noelani removed the sunglasses from his face before leaning on the counter and smiling at the woman behind it. “Hi there, I’m here for the gym challenge. My sign up should be under Noelani Kekoa.” He finished by taking out his id so she would be able to check it. All that was left was to get a confirmation and then get on to the challenge proper. Anticipation was already starting to build inside him at the prospect.

[attr="class","spiral"]"Hello, Mister Kekoa." The receptionist greets him with a warm smile befitting of the position. When prompted, she takes his ID, running it in the USB card slider beside her keyboard and presenting it back to him. When his identification clears, she nods before announcing his appointment.

"Just beyond here will be the main battlefield. If you don't have the Pokemon you need feels free to stop by the PC to withdraw whichever ones you need. When you're ready, just summon your Pokemon onto the field and the challenge will start."

Up ahead, a plain hall leads deeper into the building. The lack of paintings, posters, or any decor help highlight that a distraction should be the last thing on the challenger's mind. When the doors part, they reveal a basic, plain battlefield, common place in most battle-based facilities.

A lack of presence bleeds through the silence as Noelani is left to his own devices. On one end of the field, a PC sits there, just as promised. Otherwise, there's nothing of note, leaving him to follow prior instructions.

Thankfully Noelani had already came prepared and with him were the pokemon he was planning to use so to there would be no need to use the PC. Still, he made sure to listen attentively to the receptionist and after she was done the alolan just nodded in understanding before speaking “Thank you sweetheart.”

Giving her a parting wink and small salute Noelani turned on his heel and walked towards the hall with his Vulpix hot on his heels. He gave his surroundings a glance but they appeared rather bland so there wasn’t much to see or get distracted with. The battlefield he found himself on was also very much the same. Maybe the gym leader just liked the sort of style.

Not caring too much about that Noelani gestured with his head towards the field. Giving a bark of confirmation Wikolia moved towards the center of it. She wasn’t left alone there and just as she arrived another pokemon materialized next to her from the pokeball the alolan had thrown. Stretching Makani looked around before turning to give Noelani a grin.

Rolling his eyes good naturally trainer could only say “Yeah, Yeah. I did promise after all.” making the Dragapult release a rasping chuckle before settling in. They were ready and now was left was for the challenge to start.

[attr="class","spiral"]Only after both Pokemon are present does the Gym come alive. A static voice booms over the PA system:

"Welcome to the Battle Frontier! Today's challenge will be the Sword and Shield challenge! The rules for the challenge are as follows: this will be a double battle format consisting of two Pokemon each."

A mechanical column sprouts out from the other end of the field. Numerous gears shift in accordance with the constant clicking until two Pokeball are ejected from its nozzle. Both release Fernando's two Pokemon and they take the stage without consequence.

"Silph has chosen Aegislash and Golurk!"

The automation Pokemon shows no emotion, merely standing there. His Aegislash however twirls in place, blade shining against the light, a testament to its edge.

"Battle routine set."

Despite not being here, Fernando's voice calls out the last command. His Pokemon know the line by heart, etched into their training, a call to action to act to the best of their ability. Nothing changes but their awareness of what comes next bubble inside of them.

"Execute!"

And with that, the battle starts.

Noelani rose an eyebrow when he was greeted by an intercom rather then someone standing against him and facing him. When he saw a mechanical pillar rise and dispense the pokemon he would fight the alolan decided to chalk it up to the gym’s gimmick or style. There could be other reasons for it as well but it didn’t really matter currently and this was just stray thoughts that came while waiting for the battle to start.

As soon as the signal to begin was given Noelani wasted no time to give out his orders “Will-o-Wisp and contain. Makani set up for bombardment.”

Being his probably most battle oriented pokemon and already having psych themselves up for combat they carried out his orders without delay. Blue ghastly wisps of fire formed around the Vulpix hovering above her tails and growing in number before launching themselves towards their two opponents in attempt to hit them. While she was doing that the Dragapult had turned incorporeal and sank into the ground only to appear below Wikolia while turning solid and lifting her up on his head before rapidly gaining altitude.

The vulpix paws slid a bit as she righted herself and adjusted to the new position on to of the Dragon type’s head but still managed to open her maw and spit out an intense column of fire. The Fire Spin would attempt to land and attempt to entrap their opponents in a fiery tornado. Regardless if the attack succeeded the Dragapult would also attempt to use Lock On on the Aegislash.

[attr="class","spiral"]The sight of blue fire is a sight for sore eyes. In tandem, Fernando's ghost Pokemon work together. It's not like the two have prepared for every situation. In fact, they've only seen a glimpse of what the world of Pokemon has to offer. What they do know however is their practiced routine. Aegislash parts held by the Golurk which remains unaffected by the ghost's Pokemon's earthly pull.

Repeated pangs sound off as the WILL-O-WISP collides with Aegislash's KING'S SHIELD. It's barrier renders the both of them impervious, Golurk purposefully extending the shield forward to tank the attack. While the Aegislash remains strong, the Golurk starts to charge forward, becoming a living battering ram as it surges into its HIGH HORSEPOWER. All that force is sent barreling toward the much smaller Vulpix.

Noelani clicked his tongue in displeasure as he watched the Will-O-Wisp get blocked though he had to be quick on his feet as his pokemon weren’t allowed to fully pull of the rest of the routine he had ordered. The sight of charging Golurk might have intimidated other pokemon and even some members of his team but his Vulpix had experience and knew to keep a cool head so he instead focused on directing his other pokemon trusting her to evade.

Falling back on her usual tactic of blast first and try to evade while doing that the Vulpix tensed her legs and leaped to the side while simultaneously firing off a Fire Blast using it to not only try and attack the Golurk speeding towards her but also to augment her jump to side by using the moment she would have gained by firing off her attack while in the air.

Noelani wasn’t idle and quickly barked out an order to his Dragapult “Use Hex Makani and then pick up Wikolia for another try and bombardment.”

Obeying the order, the dragon used to his advantage having used Lock On previously on Aegislash and simply gathered ghostly energy and cast Hex on the steel type ghost without even looking at it directly. Instead, he focused on flying to where the Vulpix was an attempting to pick her up and carry her in his arms.

[attr="class","spiral"]The FIRE BLAST cannot stand against the concussive force of Golurk’s velocity. Flames flicker against the golem’s frame, but they don’t have the power to push it back. Brief singes line the Golurk’s armor but it seems otherwise unfazed.

Dragapult’s HEX has no problem seeking out the Aegislash. It’s LOCK-ON allows the ghastly burst of energy to home in on it. However, the Aegislash is already aglow with its own power. The HEX starts to seep in only to be discharged by its SACRED SWORD.

Akin to a javelin, the Golurk tosses the Aegislash toward the Vulpix. SACRED SWORD may not affect the Dragapult but that should allow the Aegislash to bypass its intangibility and look straight for the more solid and organic Vulpix.

A purple outline emanates from the Golurk.

Well at least Wikolia had managed to evade the Golurk’s charge though sadly the Fire Blast the Vulpix had used hadn’t been effective as an attack as they had hoped. Seeing the Hex also get repulsed meant that there wasn’t much they could do so instead Noelani ordered “Dragon Dance then target the Golurk.”

That was the direction he gave to his Dragapult though the only thing that he said to the Vulpix was “Disable then Inferno.” knowing that that there wasn’t time for anything else considering that the Aegislash was about to slam into her. It made him wince but also glad she understood his meaning with that order because as soon as the Steel type pokemon collided with her after a cry of pain the Vulpix would attempt to use Disable before trying to clamp down on the Aegislash and bite down it’s edge while unleashing Inferno.

Noelani’s eye wearily darted to the Golurk that was glowing with energy but there wasn’t much he could do to distract him beyond what he had given to Makani. Said dragon type was enveloped with the distinctive energy of Dragon Dance. The draconic energy continued to flow through him but instead of unleashing an attack he floated up and prepared while tracking the movements of the Golurk.

[attr="class","spiral"]DISABLE prevents the Aegislash from using SACRED SWORD anymore. With the Pokemon trapped between its clamped maw, the INFERNO trickles against the ghost’s steel body, leaving several singed marks from the BURN. The pain is undoubtedly one that takes its toll but the Pokemon doesn’t let up.

A sharp anger hones its attention to dealing damage in return, pent up frustrating lashing out in revenge. With the Vulpix still in physical reach, the Aegislash whirls in a vertical spin, looking to repeat the stabbing motion with a pointed HEAD SMASH.

Dragapult’s DRAGON DANCE goes uncontested as does Golurk’s PHANTOM FORCE. The purple hues turn the Pokemon transparent as it travels through the elseworld in preparation for its next attack.

Clenching a fist Noelani disliked the approach he was taking but he also knew his pokemon well enough to know they would object should he falter once he had chosen a path. Gritting his teeth as he watched the Aegislash collide with Wikolia he was glad to see that at least the Vulpix’s attack landed effectively. Lips twitching between a smirk and a grimace the alolan allowed the rising adrenalin to do its works as his focus sharpened and he gave out an order “Fire Blast.”

Facing the oncoming Head Smash with a glint of challenge in her eyes the Vulpix released a Fire Blast in an attempt to bath both her and the Aegislash in an intense blast of all-consuming fire. Either the attack would interrupt the impact or lessen it and if not but it still managed to hit at the very least would cause damage to the ghost type.

Makani wasn’t idle as well though and while the Dragapult knew there was nothing to do while the Golurk disappeared in a Phantom Force he could try to aid his partner in the fight before the hit from the ground type came. With that in mind ghostly energy surged once more around Makani before directing it towards the Aegislash in another try to land Hex on it.

[attr="class","spiral"]The FIRE BLAST does little to dissuade the Aegislash from committing to the HEAD SMASH. Should the Pokemon show any hesitance, momentum from its charge would force the ghost type to come full circle. And it does so with a punishing effect. However, close combat opens it up to retaliation, especially from such an expansive attack such as FIRE BLAST.

The flame implode at point blank, coating its steel in ashes. The constant back and forth start to accrue very real and very pressing injures but the Gym Pokemon is used to being bruised and battered. It comes with the job.

Suddenly, the Golurk reappears slightly behind the Aegislash and facing the Vulpix. It's already in flight in a HIGH HORSEPOWER charge, grabbing the Aegislash for a reinforced NIGHT SLASH using its own weight, inertia, and speed.
