the pokeball of the pyroar that his mightyena almost killed remains on his hand. he supposed it wasn't as serious as it could have been since he captured it before any major damage was done. he shrugs and just pockets the pokemon.

he looks at the mightyena beside him, who carried on like nothing happened. it wasn't surprising given the pokemon's behavior in the recent years he's been with him.

"what now?" he asks, certain that they'll probably never go to the ruins now.

the mightyena cannot give kyle an answer because it cannot talk since it's a pokemon. while it can make sounds with its throat, articulate words forming a sentence with one cohesive thought was impossible for them.

perhaps if kyle was on the help desk channel asking if he can directly understand pokemon since he's been interacting with them for majority of his life, maybe then it'd be possible.

unfortunately, this timeline isn't that timeline, and kyle is forced to watch his pokemon fumble around, trying to answer the question of his trainer. kyle ponders if his pokemon gets frustrated sometimes because their communication is a one-way street.

on one hand, capturing the first pokemon he saw was the easy way out of this moment. on another, it would have been a complete waste of resources, and being impractical just wasn't kyle's style.

when he sees the simisear, which is unattractive, doesn't have a niche of its own, and is already redundant with kyle's massive collection of fire-types, the decision to ditch it happens fast. a better fire-type will appear later, he figured.

that, or he'd save money by not actually wasting a pokeball on a pokemon he won't use. that's probably the better outcome.

"at least that bird's cool," he mutters out loud.

the mightyena starts to bark at the talonflame, clearly offended that kyle called it cool but not him. jealousy works differently for his dogs, being able to somehow act out in the worst cases possible. this was one of them.

the talonflame eventually notices the barking and swoops down from the sky. kyle breaks a sweat and starts to step back, only to stop when he realizes that his pokemon was standing on its ground, continuing to bark.

he sighs. "thunder fang," he orders it defeatedly. he supposed he just has to capture another pokemon he won't use.

they meet head-on. the talonflame meets the mightyena with its brave bird at the same moment that it sank its thunder fang on the bird's shoulders, coursing electricity in the talonflame's body. the combination of the recoil and the super effective hit was enough for kyle to swoop in with a pokeball to capture it.
