Silence followed, an unsettling silence that made Lex tense under the black coat and shift her weight to her heels, ready to run. From the shadows came a pair of two golden eyes. The creature moved forward into the light, an emaciated Shieldon longingly looking at her for any scrapes she could spare. Lex frowned, the worry dissipating as her shoulder relaxed. She turned, continuing down the dark street towards her temporary home in Slateport.

The walk continued, dark and quiet, with only the soft shuffle of her feet against the cold, wet pavement to keep her company. It was times like these she missed Killian Decker; When she was alone, and the heavy weight of paranoia rested on her shoulders instead of his arm. Perhaps it was time to move out of Slateport and settle on the Rocket sub, at least there she wouldn’t feel as vulnerable. But her stomach turned at the thought of living on a fucking submarine. No thanks. Talk about being trapped. She’d much rather be on land and run to the submarine should anything from her past come back to haunt her.

The low hum of the Magnezone caught her attention. The pokemon was high above, floating slowly between rooftops. Even if she wanted to engage, there wasn’t the opportunity. She watched it float out of sight, the gentle hum of its magnetized body fading with it.

As the humming faded, Lex was left in silence. For a moment, she stood still on the empty street. A light fog pushed in from the sea had settled under the dim streetlamps, making the lonely night grow even more eerie. She looked ahead at the empty darkness between the lights. She could see her building now, tucked up to the left around a small corner.

A surprising pop made her jump. The most distant streetlamp seemed to explode with small sparks puttering out of the light. Odd.

The next closest followed suit, a surprising pop followed by darkness beneath it.

And the next.

Lex’s stomach twisted into a knot, hand reaching for the closest pokeball on her belt. The lamp just before the one she stood under popped and sputtered into nothing. Hers was next.

Looking up she could see a small figure glide from the previous lamp towards hers. The small pokemon scurried to end of the lamp, rubbing it vigorously until the light popped and static sparked from its cheeks. The Emolga let out a cheerful coo when it spotted Lex. He jumped off the lamp, floating down slowly to the dark street. Fresh electric popped from his fur, light sparkling in the darkness around her. The pokemon continued, more electricity sparking across his body. It seemed intentional, as if he wanted to show off the energy he had just collected.

Lex smiled. The light danced in front of her as she pokemon jumped about, cooing happily with his display. Lex took an empty pokeball from the pocket and tossed it lightly at the Emolga.

Then the light disappeared, and darkness settled in, once again; A darkness she couldn’t escape.
