His knee bounces, restless, as he runs through a collection of coins and scribbled numbers in an old notebook that he’s scattered across a table. [break][break]

Parked in a seat outside of the pokecenter on route 119, under the glow of the artificial lights, Angelo pours over the funds he’d accumulated for the day and the ones he’d had to part with. Taking stock of his finances was always a sobering task. Boring. Frustrating. [break][break]

Letting out a sigh, Angelo leans back in his chair and chews on the end of his pen with a frown, distracting himself from the less than favourable numbers he’s scrawled in handwriting that’s deceptively neat. It doesn’t matter how much he cuts and rearranges; they’re never going to suddenly soar unless he makes drastic changes to his lifestyle.[break][break]

It’s just for a little longer, he thinks… Although it sounds more bitter in his head, in his gut, than it used to be. Not quite able to convince himself it was a reassuring thought. [break][break]

Instead the courier fixes tired blue eyes on his Lycanroc, rolling on her back as she plays and appeases Mini – his Kangaskhan’s baby – while the mother snoozes just behind his chair. It’s nice to see that even after her recent evolution Orion’s still retained her playful spirit… And her goofiness, Angelo notes, as she rolls in the dirt and starts sneezing; startling the baby and herself. A page is turned, lid at the end of a pen mangled with teeth marks; Angelo giving up on his mundane task in favour of a blank sheet, indentations from his calculations pressed through onto the new canvas. Reminders bleeding through. [break][break]

Tip of his pen hovers mindlessly over the lined paper, just about to drag ink over the unspoiled surface, when Orion’s bark rips through the night time quiet. When his gaze falls to her, he takes note of the Lycanroc standing over the baby Kangaskhan, her tail swirling like a helicopter propellor as sky blue eyes point upwards. A Mothim fluttering by, drawn by the artificial glow of the lights in the dark. It drifts away as soon as the sharp woofs start puncturing through the lull. [break][break]

“Good job, Ori. You saved us all,” Angelo muses, lips curling into a wry grin. “But keep it down, alright, hero?” He didn’t need the resident Nurse Joy out here, reprimanding him for causing a commotion in the middle of the night.

His pen doodles over the page of their own occurred – although there’s no creative talent to be found here – drawing and making notes of whatever comes to mind.[break][break]

Orion has abandoned her charge, suddenly more interested in sniffing at a Kakuna that is leaning up against a tree, leaving Mini to stumble back to him and press her little paws against his leg – scratching for attention. His gaze doesn’t break from his "work" when he leans to the side, an arm lowering to scoop up the Kangaskhan’s child so she can sit with him, her claws patting a beat on the table as if she enjoys the sounds. [break][break]

Behind him, Gem lets out a snore.

Elbow on the table, his chin resting in his palm, Angelo looks away from his page of nonsensical doodles and pipedream ideas to let out a yawn. Mini was already asleep on his lap, her tiny snuffles joining her mother’s louder comatose induced rumbles at his back. Only proving to highlight just how late it was and how little progress he'd made. [break][break]

Slowly, feeling dissatisfied with a great many things that he’d scratched in ink into his notebook from his quiet aching for solutions, he flips it shut. Hiding the faint evidence of desperation that lingers in his heart, temporarily leaked out onto the pages. Tomorrow was another day… [break][break]

Fishing in his pocket for his phone to check the time out of pure curiosity, Angelo almost startles when his fingers touch something fuzzy and warm… Tingling against the tips of his digits. He may have been startled a little more than he would have cared to admit, his jolt disturbing Mini on his lap, who lets out a whine at being woken from her slumber. [break][break]

“Shit.. Sorry,” he hisses, like a parent who’d woken their kid up by stepping on the wrong creaky stair, grimacing. “Shhh… Back to sleep.” Angelo quickly pets the Kangaskhan child, soothing her back into her slumber before he takes another dive into his pocket. Carefully, he detaches the creature from his phone – now depleted completely of battery life, he notes – to look at the tiny bug in his palm.[break][break]

“You better not be planning on pulling a dine and dash on me, little guy.” [break][break]

He guesses one more, tiny mouth to feed won’t hurt…
