It had been weeks since the fire on route 119. While the blaze was minor compared to Hoenn's other troubles. Xander still hadn't been able to forgive himself. Seeing those children trapped inside the fire had triggered painful memories. Painful enough to make him run rather than try to save them.[break][break]

He'd really left them alone and terrified. Xander shuddered to think about what could have happened had Alexei not been there. The gym leader had not only handled the fire but snapped Xander out of his panic. While they saved the kids and the shrine. Xander's attempt at being a Ranger had been a failure.[break][break]

The fuck-up felt so bad that it almost took any thoughts of doing it again and squashed them. If not for Senon's advice, it would have too. Xander didn't want to be stationary anymore. He desired to change, but he'd need strength to make it happen.[break][break]

Maybe Sénon could help him find some? Xander reached out to the ranger via text.[break][break]

"Could you meet me at Mt.Chimney?
I'd like to discuss something with you.

"Hot damn." He wiped his brow for the second time in the last sixty seconds. It seemed he was reaching the peak now.

Finishing his weekly trek along the Fiery Path had a unique twist this time. Rather than going home or engaging in some mission, he'd be meeting someone. By request via quite suggestive message.

Xander Belmont was a young ranger prospect with a familiarity about him Sénon couldn't place. There was something about the guy the older redhead found endearing.

Perhaps it was the way he stumbled along a path he wasn't sure of as Sénon himself had once done. Eventually his steps would become more assured and his back would straighten as he came into knowing that where he was going and what he was doing, was where he was supposed to be going and what he was supposed to be doing.

For now with every unsure step he would reach out to the world around him for stability, to keep him balanced. Quite naturally, Sénon himself had become part of that world.

He didn't know exactly what prompted this meeting but he knew a challenge when he was issued one.

By the time he reached the summit his shirt had sweat through. With an exasperated sigh the hard part was done and the fun part was all that was left. "How you feeling Belmont?" Jūken stood aside his master, arms crossed, and after the walk up the mountain; ready to rumble.

Enduring the heat in silence, Xander toiled with his thoughts. An anxious pressure slowly built in his chest. Was this a mistake? If not, it was starting to feel like one. Xander shook his head, "No." he muttered, this was the right choice. Even if it didn't feel like it at the moment - he knew it would eventually. Or so he hoped.

He'd been pacing when Senon arrived. "I'm alright." Xander answered dryly, stopping in front of the Ranger. "Thanks for meeting me." his lips curled into a mild frown. Hiking here had left Senon drenched in sweat. "Sorry about the location." he rubbed at the nape of his neck.

"I know it's hot, but it felt like a fitting place to make an important decision." Xander swallowed hard. "That can wait, though." his eyes drifted to the Riolu at Senon's side. "I guess I don't have to ask if you brought Pokemon." golden orbs moved from Riolu to his trainer.[break][break]

"Battle me." he said bluntly, "I'd like to see how strong I am, how much I need to grow. So, battle me."

The sweat was nothing Xander had to apologize for, Sénon appreciated it all the same. The downward curl of his lips meant there was probably more going on with the young trainer than he knew.

The battle would be therapeutic for the both of them.

Jūken looked up to gaze at the eyes of his master, his leader. The one he trusted the most.

The Riolu knew they hadn't come all this way for nothing but he'd seen this human before and Sénon seemed interested in him. Like Adrian Malcolm and even Miss Cait it seemed all of Sénon's closest humans challenged him to battle.

"Traditional, Last Mon Standing?" The old way; tried, true, Kanto tested and approved. Two sides exhaust all resources until one side is unable to battle.

"or Point Per Round?" Isolated 1v1 Battles yields (1) one point to the victor; first to a set-point wins the match. A modern Hoenn alternative, less stressful and demanding of the pokémon.

The Ranger drummed his mind over the potential match ups and the Riolu stood-by.

The ranger hadn't turned him down. That was good. Of the two options Senon presented, Xander was only familiar with one. "Traditional." Xander replied. Best to stick with what he knew for something so important.

With a deep breath, he stepped back a couple of feet. Putting just enough distance between him and Senon so that they could battle comfortably. A hand reached for one of the Poke Balls around his waist. Fingers hovered overtop the ball's polished surface.

This was it. The fire inside Xander would either burn brighter or choke down to ash. One way or another, this was the moment everything changed. He gripped the Poke Ball and with a flick of his wrist, released the Pokemon inside.
