he wonders how long it was since he last spent his time in the wilds of littleroot. slateport was still occupied, he was still under the radar, and his house wasn't full of canine pokemon just yet.

"you see, ike, this place is my second most visited route," he tells his urshifu.

the pokemon looks at kyle, bewildered. he wonders why the trainer would suddenly talk about the tragic backstory™ and fails to recognize that his trainer just randomly talks about topics that no other people would care about if he's alone with his pokemon.

"i spent a bajillion weekly refreshes trying to get a single snubull before i had to pray to the gods and explicitly mention that i need one for my collection."

the urshifu sees a target. being too used to just being told to beat up whatever wild pokemon looks at him funny, it starts to march towards it. kyle stops his pokemon with a hand on its shoulder.

"you should pick your own fights, preferably those you can win," he warns his urshifu.

it nods in response, understanding his trainer's advice. as soon as kyle lets go of his pokemon to look for another one, it quickly turns to the gardevoir again, rushing at it with aqua jet.

powered up with a jet of water, it rushes at the fairy-type with a headbutt. an iron head knocks it down to the ground before it tries to get up and get away from the urshifu.

"oh."

eventually, the urshifu gets back to kyle. unlike the other ones of the same species, he finds the one he has to be much more childish and immature. maybe he really should spend more time with his pokemon that require special attention.

"i guess today can be a free day," he tells his urshifu.

it smiles and then goes to the nearest patch of flower. plucking one of them, it returns back to kyle to present it as a gift. it seems proud of it, forcing kyle to take it from him out of appreciation of a good gesture.

"thanks?"

he notices the flabebe on it and then lets it go when he hears it squeak.

the urshifu finds another pokemon that resembles a plant. it tries to take it for kyle, escaping his trainer's eyes when he got distracted by the previous gift.

"oi, ike," he hears his trainer call.

the urshifu decides that the time is now. he looks the maractus in the eye, and with a swift movement, jumps at it with an aerial ace. it cuts through the maractus' defenses easily and takes it out in one hit.

he looks back to kyle when the trainer finally catches up to it, handing it the unconscious body of the grass-type.

"oh, uh, sure."

kyle feels obligated to capture the maractus this time. part of him blames himself for getting the urshifu along with him during trips to catch pokemon during pp99 since he just knocks out pokemon immediately for captures.
