They lean across the table to create a private bubble, folding in towards each other as they whisper about rumoured Avatar killers over pungent coffee and sweet baked goods under a backdrop of unsuspecting patron chatter. [break][break]

Somehow, Angelo thinks, it’s not the strangest thing that's happened to him today.[break][break]

“Right, you've got a point. I’ll keep it in mind,” another thing to add to the growing pile on his shoulders. [break][break]

If it bothers Angelo that Latias’s companionship and his possession of Latios’s vital force could attract murderous eyes his way, he doesn’t show it. The tiny crease in the middle of his brow could easily be passed off as a general, impersonal concern - like reading another sob story on the front page of the news - or honest uneasiness for affected friends. [break][break]

“Glad you’ve got my back, Ky. Thanks.”[break][break]

Angelo leans back into his seat at the same time Kyle does his, stretching his legs out to from beneath the table and to the side, so he doesn’t kick the other man’s shins when he extends. He lets a small curl pull the corner of his lips as he picks at the crumbling remains of his muffin, picking up what pieces still want to stick together without disintegrating. [break][break]

“Yeah, it’ll be fine. You never know, she might not even show up again,” he lies with a casual shrug, licking bits of zesty morsels off his thumb. “Maybe she just has a thing for brunette guys and thought she'd check out the goods.” His grin sharpens, slightly - defusing with sly humour. “You think she might've seen you first and looked the other way?”

kyle sighs of depression when angelo lays out the hard truth. it was something he has considered, but knowing the facts about it, it's hard to argue otherwise.

"probably. it's hard to keep her attention if you're in the same area after all."

the straight face remains before he breaks down to soft laughter. he has to compose himself before he asks the next question.

"wanna head back now and meet up with the rest of them?" he asks him. "we can pick up coffee for them too."

whether or not avatar hunters are around, or if angelo was considered one in their eyes, kyle thinks what he does was enough for now given the very vague information they have. even if it was true, he'll live.

“Careful,” he quickly puts in after Kyle’s defeatist remark, the champion’s straight face met with an equally deadpan expression from the courier. “Don’t you know? Flattery will get you anywhere.” [break][break]

Lips crack into a smile as the faux seriousness breaks, Angelo letting out the first proper laugh he’d had in what felt like a good while. It becomes tainted with hisses and curse words almost immediately however, with him clutching his injured chest as agony spreads from his convulsions like wildfire. [break][break]

“Ah – fuck… Shit. Not funny.” He laughs anyway for a few more agonising bursts until he somehow manages to find calm; breathless and hissing with a sharp grin.[break][break]

“Yeah, sounds good. Get something strong for me too, Champ? I'm a dead man walking over here.” [break][break]

With that, they make to stand, leaving traces of cake crumbs and coffee rings on the tabletop. Angelo carries part of the mess they’d made within him, weight of this new information sitting heavy on his weary chest that’s not so easily wiped away. [break][break]

Avatars. AQUA Initiative. The Soul Dew and Latias. Supposing avatar hunters on the loose. All things he’d never expected to become involved in when he’d arrived on Hoenn’s shores those few years back.[break][break]

There was a lot of thinking - reconsidering of plans he'd thought were absolute - to be done…
