Suzu is breathless, staring at him with both suspicion and surprise. Heat continues to rise in her face, lending colour to her otherwise pale face. It blends in with the blue and black of her bruising, painting her canvas a kaleidoscope of colour.[break][break]

".... why?"[break][break]

Why had he kissed her? Why was he saying that she'd liked it- how could he possibly know that? And why did he want to do it again? What did he want from her?[break][break]

And why did she feel the same? [break][break]

Her eyes linger on the outline of his lips, on the rise and fall of his chest, on the way his feet point toward her and his attention remains focused wholly on her. It makes her sick: like she's no longer in control. Like whatever grasp she'd had on her emotions had just been lost.[break][break]

Xander frowns. Was she seriously going to pull away again? Pretend like she hadn't felt what he felt.

"Because I felt like it." there was more to it than simply want. He knew that, but saying it aloud was hard. Xander wanted to choke the words back down his throat. Prevent something else from happening that had a chance to ruin things.

"Because..."

[break][break]

He trailed off, all the different colors on her face a distraction. The high from their kiss still ran through his veins. Fueling his thoughts and his desires. It kept the world bright, and his attention focused solely on her. That's where it needed to be. She calmed and excited him at the same time. Made him nervous and confident and every other colorfully verbose adjective he could think of.

"I don't want to say it because it'll scare you away."

Xander can hear his heart pounding in his ears. Any second now, it could burst right out and stop him. He almost wants it too. A swift death would save him from saying or doing anything that could end things before they started.

She scoffs, shaking her head and dropping her gaze. Of course that's what he'd say, rather than say what he was really thinking. He was good at that, even as kids. Putting on a brave face, saying whatever it was he thought was what the other wanted to hear.[break][break]

But this wasn't what she wanted to hear.[break][break]

Scare her away? What was he talking about? And why was her stomach so upset, why was it clenching with such a ferocity, her heart beating so loud in her chest. She felt breathless, nauseous, a little bit sore on the mouth. And yet she craved something, the sweetness of his breath, the smell of whatever cologne he wore.[break][break]

And you left me as kids, shook me off like dead weight, like I didn't matter.[break][break]

She was going to make him say it, wasn't she? Of all the times for her to be dense, Suzu had to pick now. He wanted to frown, but her words from early kept it from his face. She would think he was lying the second he did.[break][break]

"Forgot about the bus. I -I didn't know what I wanted then, but I do know."[break][break]

There was a moment of hesitation. A second where Xander could take it all back and laugh before the next set of words came out. It blew past like the wind.[break][break]

Forced steps carry him closer, and he reaches for her hand - longing to feel her touch. If she lets him, he'll clasp it tightly and look into her eyes. Xander needs her to see that he's serious. That deep within his golden hues swims confidence in the words he's about to say.[break][break]

"Suzume, I have...feelings for you. Strong feelings. I don't know exactly how to describe it because I've never felt them before."[break][break]

He pauses, struggling to think of the words that properly articulate his point.[break][break]

"You make the world brighter when I'm with you. It has...color."[break][break]

He's drunk, clearly, because it sounds like poetic nonsense even to him. Yet, that doesn't stop it from being true.

Suzu frowns, but her brows tremble where they come together. Any attempts shes making to seem strong, to seem defiant, are lost in her child-like expression. She's weak. He makes her weak. [break][break]

"And what do you want, Xander? Because.."[break][break]

Fortunately, he continues. She jumps where his hand reaches for hers, rough skin brushing her soft fingers. He squeezes, desperate to hold onto her, but she remains motionless and unresponsive. What was she supposed to do? What was she supposed to say?[break][break]

This was foreign territory. This was emotion bubbling to the surface that she's never encountered before. Suzume Amemiya, a fully-fledged woman, but unable to come to terms with the butterflies in her chest. She had been built on lies and deceit, taught how to steal, to distract, to remain detached.[break][break]

But here she was now, attached to him by her fingertips, Xander's hand squeezing hers.[break][break]

"I've heard these words before, Xan..."[break][break]

And she has- they've just never come from someone so close to her.[break][break]

The alcohol on his breath seems to wake her up from whatever trance she was in. Some part of her knows that he's telling her the truth- that this instance, this interaction, is real. But denial, fear, desperation to cling to what she knows prevents her from accepting it, from accepting him.[break][break]

To do that would be to betray Rocket, wouldn't it?[break][break]

"You're drunk. Chances are, you'll go home and fall asleep and you won't even remember any of this."[break][break]

He's come too far to back away now. Not even the fear of rejection is going to stop him from continuing forward. That's what waiting on the other end of all this, right? Rejection. Xander swears he sees it written on her face. It's so stoic, the opposite of what someone delighted by a confession would wear.

Yet she doesn't retreat, doesn't pull back her hands, and step away from him furious.

Suzu's right, he is drunk, but she's wrong that he won't remember. Their kiss will be etched into his memory until the day he dies now. A permanent reminder of what it was like to reach for something you wanted.

"Forget kissing you? Never."

That doesn't seem like it'll be enough to convince her. So, Xander takes a risk. What's left of his rationality is screaming at him not too, but it's too late. His tongue has already begun to form the words.

"If you don't believe me, then come home with me. See for yourself that I'm serious when we wake up tomorrow. Together."

Suzu sighs, shaking her head. She should be pulling away, turning him down, disallowing this sort of interaction. But she isn't, she wasn't, and she couldn't.[break][break]

"You don't really mean that. This is just temporary. You're drunk, you're not thinking."[break][break]

She, too, could see colours and feel deeper emotions than she ever had while drunk. It was the reason she refrained.[break][break]

It's a start. Better than the nowhere Xander was standing currently.

A breath he didn't know he was holding escapes. This is what it felt like to be nervous. He'd forgotten all about it.

They walk, and if Suzu doesn't pull her hand away, Xander won't either. It feels too good to hold hers inside his own. He leads them along, and it's a good thing they weren't too far from his apartment.

The building is small, one bedroom and one bath. Xander has the money to afford better, but not the desire to upgrade. They stop at the front door, and he turns to look at her.

It remains clasped in his, warm, secure, a constant reminder of their shared kiss. But even still, she holds onto that nugget of doubt, that belief that this was temporary like a dream. She does her best to focus on her footsteps against the pavement, on the elongated shadows that grow and shrink as they pass beneath every street light. It doesn't take very long to get to their destination and she swallows hard, realizing just how close he happens to live to her place with ryuuzaki amemiya. [break][break]

"Xander.."[break][break]

He's inviting her inside and she hesitates, studying him closely. There is a part of her that wants to cross that line, but the other is whispering to her, encouraging her to cut it off before this feeling could grow too big. But her hand remains in his and she squeezes.

The squeeze is a beacon that draws his eyes towards their hands. Still connected. He'd smile if he had it in him. Suzu will have to settle for a nod and the gentle tug that comes as he leads her inside.

Before Hoenn, Xander never had a place to call his own. He'd spent more time in tents next to the noise of excavation sites than in bedrooms or houses. You might assume that meant he wouldn't care how it looked, but it's quite the opposite. The place is meticulously neat. Not obsessively so, as things are sitting about on the coffee table and couch, but the apartment's overall neatness still might come as a surprise.

It's Xander, however. So aside from the overabundance of art supplies stashed next to the living room window. The apartment's furnishings are bland. Absent of the personality and expression that you'd expect from someone with Xander's artistic talents.

He leads her to the living room and reluctantly lets go of her hand. "Sorry it's not that impressive." why did he even care?

"Have a seat, and I'll get something for your face."

Xander heads to the kitchen, leaving Suzu alone to look around - to explore....to turn and walk away.

[attr="class","textbox"]He tugs her. It takes her breath away with a quiet exhale. She is lead inside, warmth wrapping around her like a comforting coccoon. But that comfort leaves her nervous, leaves her second-guessing.[break][break]

It was as if no time had passed. Everything in her immediate line of sight reminded her, almost painfully, of Xander. Her chest burns with the threat of bittersweet tears, as though she is looking at this through the eyes of grief or loss.[break][break]

But he's right here.[break][break]

"You've never been impressive."[break][break]

Awkwardly, Suzume drops down onto the couch as if her legs had finally given out on her. She sinks, leaning back slowly into softness, into a false sense of security. Her eyes scan the room, looking for escapes at the same time she's looking for a reason to stay. This wasn't right- but this was exactly right.[break][break]

Xander turns the other cheek, heading into another room to look for something. His words are lost in the clamor of her thoughts. And that is when she sees it: something sparkly, something out of place, something worth a lot more than Xander probably gave it credit for.[break][break]

Her fingers itch and it spreads like wildfire beneath her skin. It tasted like anticipation.

Fortunately, Xander's no stranger to injuries, so there's an icepack inside his freezer. He grabs it, holding it tightly in his hands as nerves root him to the floor. Tension fills his shoulder and stiffens his neck.

What if she left? Lips purse. Could he handle it if Suzu wasn't there? Would he chase her or let her go? The uncertainty weighs down his chest. He can't stand here forever, that he does know. Before he leaves the kitchen, Xander grabs the rum inside the fridge.

Just in case.

Relief washes over as he enters the living room.

"You're still here."

[break][break]

Xander joins Suzu on the couch, sitting close enough for their legs to brush against each other. He rests the rum on the coffee table and reaches out to place the ice pack against her lip. She could do it herself, but it's an excuse to be close to her.

"I'm glad you didn't leave."

Her eyes keep coming back to the meteorite shard sitting on the shelf. It's out of the way, hardly noticable, and yet she'd been drawn to it immediately. She felt nauseous, agitated, unsure what to do. Her instincts begged her to take it and run- to make a convincing excuse and get out of there with the fragment in her hand.[break][break]

And yet, her ass remains rooted in the couch and she exhales as Xander re-enters the room. If he'd hesitated too long in the kitchen overthinking, she was none-the-wiser.[break][break]

"Yeah.. yeah, I'm still here."[break][break]

Suzu does not really smile, however, perhaps a weak twitch of her lip. It hurts to do even that, now, at this point. Her cheek is sore and her lip is swollen and aching, and even still she chews the inside of her cheek to redirect the pain.[break][break]

"Oww.."[break][break]

She sucks in her breath as coldness is pressed to her lip. One hand instinctively rises to grab his, holding his wrist tightly, acting defensively. Suzume loosens her grip after a moment when she realizes the pressure against her face doesn't increase.[break][break]

"You need me here."

She grabs his wrist and Xander's silent. He can feel the pressure, the tightening of her grip that's begging him to ask why she's so on edge. It's an active choice to ignore it. He focuses on how her touch makes his heart race.[break][break]

"Sorry, I'll be more careful." [break][break]

Xander can't take his eyes off her. He's looking past the bruises and swollen lip to the woman underneath. [break][break]

"More than you realize." [break][break]

Though the distance between them is already small, he inches closer, desperate for another taste of her. [break][break]

"I want you. Do you want me?" [break][break]

Gold eyes smoldering with an intense desire stare deeply into emerald hues. His lips move closer, ice pack slowly sliding away.
