It was refreshing to be paired against someone she hadn’t met before. Her mind immediately began to wonder if he was another type-specialist or a breeder with a specific focus, but there weren’t any features that disclosed such a fact, Katherine had come to decide.

Greyson did seem more excited than alarmed to battle her, etching a sly grin into her visage. If that was a sign of confidence, then surely she was in for quite a battle.

Good.

She didn’t want him to bore her.

“It’s not too different from doubles, really, but it is rarer. I am sure you’ll get the hang of it.” Three capsules are retrieved and from each of them a pokemon escapes.

Greyson is given the opportunity to attack first, it seems.

greyson releases three pokemon as well. a meganium, boltund, and a shiny galarian ponyta.

violet hues assess katherine's pokemon critically, but decides the risk is worth it.

"you three know the drill. set it up!"
[break][break]

all three begin to move, and act, at once. sammy's bud begins to glow a faint hue of green, opening itself further as if it was sunbathing. all three pokemon on his side of the field are surrounded in a thin membrane of amber energy, the LIGHT SCREEN protecting them from special attacks.

to her left, and in the center, the boltund releases a wave of electrical energy that changes the landscape around them. the ground of the entire battlefield shifts into a neon yellow, the ELECTRIC TERRAIN boosting his typing attacks.

lastly, with no prep work of her own, rae summons a DAZZLING GLEAM and fires the marble sized bits of light directly at the froslass.

“Poison all of them.”

Not a hint of hesitation is laced with the woman’s words. Confidence spills past her lips just as she barks out the order, commanding her Salazzle to act first. Poisonous gas is released from the lizard’s maw, intent on swallowing the area whole until none of Greyson’s pokemon can escape its domain.

Despite what little cover it provides and the fact that it masks Katherine’s own pokemon momentarily, the DAZZLING GLEAM shines through and illuminates through the murkiest of smokescreens.

”Hail. Icy wind.”

Each of her pokemon knows which move to execute. The Froslass manifests a HAIL in the middle of the summer effortlessly, blowing a kiss that drops the temperature rapidly. Meanwhile, Sableye breathes an ICY BREATH that covers the immediate area with widespread attack.

Amethyst, Katherine’s signature pokemon, seeks not only to damage all three of its opponents but also slow them down.

The dazzling gleam connects with each of the three targets, leaving slight burns on the skin of Katherine’s pokemon.

notes: poison gas is used in order to hopefully inflict poison upon all three of greyson's pokemon. a hail is set up + sableye uses icy wind to dmg / slow down the enemy. in addition, they are all hit by dazzling gleam since it's an aoe.

"hold your breathes! rae, clear it with your fairy wind!"

the three pokemon respond, each sucking in a mouthful of air before closing them. rae responds immediately after her attack, using her FAIRY WIND to clear her side of the field of the dangerous smoke before any pokemon could be poisoned. as it narrows the space between the two teams, it collides with her opponents ICEY WIND, eliminating 1/3 of it.

unfortunately, the other two weren't as lucky.

both pokemon's LIGHT SCREENS do a good job of blunting the damage, though the way the ice collects around their joints tells greyson their speed would be hindered.

nevertheless, with the HAIL now falling on their heads, he needed to act.

"reflect, sammy. riley, charge up and cover some distance."
[break][break]

the aforementioned pokemon listen, doing as greyson commands. a REFLECT goes over the other psychic barrier, protecting them better against physical attacks, while electricity dances across riley's body in the form of a CHARGE. the boltund begins to close the distance between the two teams, but remains vigilant of any counter attacks.

“Keep at it, Cinder.”

Neutralizing one threat by having her pokemon repeat the same move is something that Katherine is willing to accept, it seems. For as long as Rae will breathe out her FAIRY WIND, Salazzle will unleash her POISON GAS.

“Amethyst, the Meganium, please.”

Like a true PRANKSTER, the Sableye unleashes spectral orbs of WILL O WISP that target the grass-type before it’s able to respond with a move of its own. The nature of the ghost-type’s ability allows it to act first when utilizing moves of this sort - an advantage that they both sought to abuse in battles.

Katherine’s remaining pokemon utilizes her HAIL to set up an AURORA VEIL, greatly reducing any incoming damage regardless of its physical or special attack nature.

The hail continues to strike each and every pokemon - save for the Froslass who had summoned it.

“A fair warning,” The elite four member finally addresses her opponent. “Your pokemon won’t outlast mine. You’ll need to go on the offensive.”

notes: poison gas is used in order to hopefully inflict poison upon all three of greyson's pokemon / clash with a second fairy wind, should one be used. will o wisp on the meganium + boosted by prankster. aurora veil is up. hail is still active.

it occurs to greyson rather quickly that katherine — whoever she might be — was a skilled trainer. furthermore, he couldn't help but regret not organizing his team better. in truth he had simply thrown the three of them together, while it seemed the woman across from him, had planned it out much better.

a lesson learned.

"rae, keep it up!"

seeing no option but to continue to match the POISON GAS, rae continues pushing the FAIRY WIND against it, hoping to act as an appropriate barrier for as long as possible.

riley, taking the initiative granted to him through a temporary lull, releases an empowered SPARK in the direction of the salazzle. with any luck, it would be paralyzed, or even temporarily distracted, to give rae time to breathe.
[break][break]

unfortunately, despite setting up the teams many defenses, they do nothing to stop the WILL-O-WISP that seeks out the meganium. she feels it rend, and BURN her flesh, but is powerless to stop it. instead, she goes on the offensive, releasing a PETAL BLIZZARD around the froslass.

greyson's attention flicks to katherine, a small smile forming.
[break][break]

"thanks for the advice, just slow on the up-take."
[break]

Katherine had indeed planned a strategy for this battle. Although it was more of a passing thought, she still sought to train her pokemon in a style of battle that they don’t often experience.

Trio versus trio battles were quite rare, it seemed.

Both the incoming PETAL BLIZZARD and the frighteningly quick SPARK phase through the shimmering AURORA VEIL Froslass had set up for their team. With their damage reduced, both of Katherine’s pokemon manage to sustain their damage better than they should have.

Salazzle, although momentarily paralyzed, would indeed fire up a third POISON GAS at the first chance she gets, but that isn’t to say that Rae hadn’t been given some breathing time. The opportunity to strike first is there.

Froslass, however, seeks to blend along with the hail, their innate SNOW CLOAK masking their movements. As they float through the battlefield, they seek to find Riley and take them by surprise, attempting to land a DRAINING KISS to recover some of their health at the cost of their enemy’s.

Sableye, calm as ever, merely keeps the pressure up as it breathes an ICY WIND into the air. The frigid squall billows through, carrying the intent of slowing each of their opponents down.

No words escape through the woman's lips this time around.

notes: froslass & salazzle are both struck by the moves used against them. froslass attempts to use DRAINING KISS vs riley. salazzle is paralyzed for a few moments, but uses POISON GAS later. sableye uses ICY WIND. the hail / aurora veil are both still in effect.

greyson knew he was in trouble. he had he known he was fighting an elite four member, he might've felt more nervous than he was. after all, they were the pinnacle of trainers among the region. in a way, looking back, he was glad he didn't. he might've lost sooner.

again greyson's jaw steels, lips turning upwards into a grimace. the AURORA VEIL was an effective defense, one that he had no real counter for short of an all out barrage. furthermore, the HAIL and SNOW CLOAK allowed the froslass to act largely unmolestedly. he sighed, shaking the negative thoughts and doubt from his mind. he was his own worst enemy, after all.

katherine's point from earlier struck a chord with him. he needed to act, not react. it was a risk ⁠— a huge one. but, you didn't become a great trainer by playing safe.

"rae, dazzling gleam!"
[break][break]

that left the smoke to run rampant on their field. a calculated risk. the DAZZLING GLEAM shoots out in a barrage at all three opponent mere moments before the gas begins anew.

"sammy, return the favor."
[break][break]

despite the pain that her BURN causes her, the meganium is more than up to a task at pay-back. beneath the cover of POISON GAS and HAIL, she releases a condensed cloud of POISON POWDER in the direction of her enemies. with any luck, they would soon feel the affliction greyson's pokemon would.

riley, on the other hand, was effectively alone. greyson had difficulty making out the canine through the gas and hail, and thus relied on her to make her own decisions. when the DRANINING KISS saps some of her life force, she responds on instinct, attempting to clamp her jaws on the froslass with a STRONG JAW empowered CRUNCH.

An opportunity to strike where Greyson expects less is presented. The DAZZLING GLEAM paints the battlefield with a myriad of pink shades that blend against one another, clashing against Froslass' very own AURORA VEIL.

But the lack of sight is only temporary, leaving Katherine's pokemon room to react.

The POISON POWDER is released in the form of a purple cloud, indicating its poisonous properties. Katherine snaps her fingers before calling out another order, ”Reflect it, Amethyst.”

The lack of reaction from her Sableye is almost worrying - but they seem to follow her command just in time. Light emits from both the pokemon and an ankle bracelet that the elite four was wearing. Blinding in its own right, it seems to serve the same purpose as Rae’s DAZZLING GLEAM - dissipating a moment afterward.

Now, the Sableye is revealed in its mega-evolved form - wielding a large ruby gem as a shield. It uses its unique properties to send back the POISON POWDER along with Salazzle’s own POISON GAS.

A combined assault is used to secure the status effect, intent on inflicting it upon Greyson’s trio except for the already-burning grass-type. Coupled with the vicious HAIL, it’s bound to whittle their health at a rapid pace.

Having exchanged blows with the canine and sapping some of its health, Froslass flees from close contact shortly after being caught by the CRUNCH. Her SNOW CLOAK covers her tracks as an ICY WIND is released, carried by a summer breeze.

notes: sableye mega evolves. it uses its shield (boosted by MAGIC BOUNCE) to reflect the poison powder just as salazzle releases its POISON GAS. froslass is hit by the crunch after using draining kiss, and escapes shortly afterward. SNOW CLOAK comes to her aid as she attempts to flee while breathing out an ICY WIND against greyson's trio.

beneath the back and forth of both teams, the air is hazy and unclear. but, not even that can shelter the expansive light that signals a mega evolution. from the shift, the wave of POISON POWDER intended for their pokemon, was instead turned back on his. combined with the POISON GAS —— it was inevitable.

a grim outlook turned even more bleak.

blotches of purples form on two-thirds of greyson's team as they're again, buffeted by the HAIL. while meganium is effected by the BURN, the other two are injured by their POISON.

"keep it up, go offensive!"

despite their afflictions, their spirits are fueled by the desire to prove themselves. as the ICY WIND sweeps over them, they retaliate. rae, sticking true to her form (and small moveset), releases another DAZZLING GLEAM while sammy layers her own abilities atop the ponyta, summoning forth a beautiful, but deadly PETAL BLIZZARD to find the hiding froslass. finally, riley approaches the mega-evolved sableye, mouth salviating, hungry to land a CRUNCH.

meanwhile, the terrain once again turns depressing beneath the onslaught of hail, the ELECTRIC TERRAIN crumbling.

Another temporary blind comes in the form of their opponent's DAZZLING GLEAM.

Although brief, it makes reacting to their attacks a slight bit more difficult, hindering the performance of Katherine's team. "Heal yourself again, Frost."

Despite the incoming PETAL BLIZZARD, the order is barked out without any hesitation. The ghost-type will find a way because that's what her pokemon do— they find a way. Despite whatever adversity or difficult challenge Katherine puts them against, they must always find a way to fulfill her wishes.

"Block it, Ameythst."

"Cinder, help her."

Despite the CRUNCH, Amethyst attempts to shield herself and position her large ruby gem between herself and Riley. The clash of teeth against crystal elicits a spark, the mega-evolved pokemon's METAL BURST finally coming into fruition.

As the counter-attack shatters - Cinder spews a stream of a violet, poisonous liquid. Should the VENOSHOCK connect with the already poisoned pokemon, its damage will be doubled, as well.

Froslass, elsewhere on the field, fails to reach any of her opponents in time for a DRAINING KISS. With her health depleted by the overwhelming PETAL BLIZZARD, she seems to be nearing her limit.

. . . Was this the end of the battle for her?

notes: sableye is mega evolved.
it uses metal burst to reflect (and double) the damage of the crunch. cinder uses venoshock on riley; should it land, the damage will be doubled as well. froslass is hit by the petal blizzard and attempts to use DRAINING KISS, but fails to reach anyone in time.

There is no indication that implies that Katherine wasn’t saying that just to lift Greyson’s spirits. Her expression remains neutral, her tone dry. Albeit, a smile does eventually reveal itself, likely due to Greyson’s own.

“If it's any consolation, you were better than most challengers who fought me at my gym.”

Aw.

For a second, she didn’t sound like a complete bitch.
