The breeze was cold.

Jayden had fallen well into Rocket's ranks, by sheer virtue of being a child of Nikolai Cross, one of their esteemed members. Though, it had not been without merit — his missions with other rockets had shown proof of that. Blood had stained the 14-year olds hands on more than one occasion, forcing him to accrue a body count higher than many had in even a lifetime.

it'd open to reveal an eevee, still young and active and curious as it perks its head up and looks around to take in its surroundings. it takes a liking especially to cross as it nuzzles into his legs, then flips over for belly rubs.

Call it out. His thumb brushes over the edge of the sphere, smooth. With a click, the sphere opens to reveal the form of a fox-like feline who some might characterize as cute. Especially as it flicks it's ears about, gazing at it's surroundings with wide, almost comically-large eyes and then purrs as it bounds over to Jayden, rubbing itself against his legs before rolling onto his belly.

[break][break] Instinctively, Jayden softens as he finds himself crouching down onto his knees to give in to the small pokemon's demands for a bellyrub. It is why, for a moment, THEO BECKETT 's words catch him off guard.

[break][break] He blinks. "Tools," he responds without preamble, remembering the words burned into his skull by many before him. "All Pokémon exist for the glory of Team Rocket." The familiar phrase rolls off his tongue, knowing very well the Team Rocket motto that has been branded onto his skin since birth.

The man's record preceded him, and Father had been absolutely clear when assigning him the mission detail. Just because he wasn't Father didn't mean he didn't have to obey.

[break][break] His breath hitches. Eyes widening with surprise, Jayden's gaze snaps to the other — and then the dagger that has flashed it's way into the man's hand. Before him, the steel of the dagger glints powerfully, even more so the pressure that Mr. Beckett seems to undeniably radiate with his presence.

he remembers his first kill — a knife plunged deep into a ponyta's stomach. repeatedly. he hadn't hesitated then, at least not in the way cross does.

Blood pulses in his ears.

[break][break] The hesitation is wrong, Jayden knows it is. How many times has he heard his father repeat the words back to him? His eyes first narrowed into slits of disappointment, something dark and looming in the shadow of his gaze. How many times had his father taught him exactly how not to hesitate — a knife slashed through his skin, held down beneath a water tank —

[break][break] 'Mischa, do you think I hesitate? Do you think your mother would?'

[break][break] It is wrong, and yet Jayden can't help himself.

[break][break] There is a sigh from THEO BECKETT and though quiet, it is enough to make Jayden flinch.

[break][break] The fourteen year old's fingers fold around the knife in the enforcer's hand, taking it from him. Something in him trembles.

[break][break] The young Eevee, who has noticed something was awry, looks up at him. It tilts it's head to the side cutely, confused, pushing itself to his feet and giving a soft whine — why had Jayden stopped petting?
