She snaps, aggravating the remainder of her still-healing concussion. Though he doesn't see it, she can feel her temple jumping with the blood pumping furiously beneath her pale skin. Despite her rage, she's in denial. She is hardly more than a paperweight, a mere fraction of what she once had been.[break][break]

And there is fear in that denial, fear that she'll never come back.[break][break]

"Anything is better than here."[break][break]

She forces herself not to fight him off, to shrug off his offer to stay at his place. It doesn't help that he, like everyone else, is too absorbed in whether or not the place is up to snuff.[break][break]

"It isn't like I can see, anyway."[break][break]

Emma is bitter when she says this, swallowing that lump of rage, maybe grief.[break][break]

It is the quiet that she notices first, and her relief is reflected in the droop of her shoulders. Emma exhales, tension leaving her body in the span of a breath; but replaced with soreness and exhaustion from holding herself up to an impossible standard. Shadows dance through her peripheral. She winces, the lights hindering more than helping.[break][break]

A cold nose sniffs near her fingers, and although it doesn't ever touch her, Hades makes absolute sure it never does. The Lycanroc steps in between them, teeth bared. Emma recoils, sucking in a breath at the window of animosity. It snaps Hades out of it and he retreats, allowing kris flynn-edwards to step in with the glass of water. [break][break]

Hades bares his teeth aggressively, and the Mightyena finds herself reacting in turn, teeth snapping, lips curled. Hackles raise on her shoulders, muscles tense. She's like a missile, prepared to react at just one more move by the other, when Flynn steps forward. A foot catches her forepaw, forcing her back with his body as he shifts into the space between the two canines to hand Emma a glass of water.

[break][break] "Take it," he says. "The water'll help you relax."

[break][break] With that, he sends a warning look at Blue to keep her distance. The Mightyena abides, if only subtly, and finds herself curling up on the floor as Flynn takes the spot on teh sofa next to her. Leaning forward, he reaches for the remote and flips through the channels, lookign for something that is mundane enough to keep them distracted but not something so boring she'll fall asleep. He flits through the news channels, the radio stations — until he sets on a nature documentary with newborn ravens.

[break][break] "Could order food for us if you're hungry," he says, reaching for his phone. Regardless of what she says, he scrolls through the various food options. Likely, probably nothing too heavy. Chinese doesn't sound bad, neither does mexican.

[break][break] It's oddly domestic — it makes Flynn uncomfortable, not having been in this position in what felt like years, but he pushes through regardless.

Flynn startles her, eliciting a sharp intake of breath as the cold glass presses against the back of her knuckles. [break][break]

"Take it," he says.[break][break]

But she doesn't. At least, not right now. Instead, the woman recoils from him just enough that its clear his advance is not welcome, evidently still rattled by the way the Pokemon had responded. Instead of posing strength, Emma seems to shrink.[break][break]

Only when Blue retreats to the corner of the room next to the couch does she relax. She fumbles the glass where Flynn chooses to retreat as well, settling into the cushions. She can perceive the glow of his phone screen, though nothing on it. Even now, all she can see are shadows and shapes, nothing distinct, nothing real.[break][break]

Her stomach growls at the prospect of food, but she says nothing. Instead, Emma remains stiff as a statue in the middle of the living room, nudged forward only by the encouragement of her midnight-form Lycanroc. He guides her toward the couch and she slowly, gingerly sets herself down on the opposite side of Flynn.[break][break]

"I'm not hungry."[break][break]

She continues to hold onto the glass of water, but she doesn't lift it to her lips either. It smells different, and she had never been good at change.

Flynn isn't the type to push — so he says nothing as he scrolls through the different food options on the app. Ugh. Delivery is really a killer. People say that Rocket are the criminals - it's really the corporations on these apps.

[break][break] "S'fine," he says, closing his phone with a click. "I'll go get somethin' for us, 'case you're hungry later." He stands up, clicking under his tongue. Blue stands up obediently, following. Flynn pauses briefly, looking between Emma Wolfe who seems the picture child of unease, and waits for her, just in case she wants to add anything.

[break][break] He doesn't expect to her.

[break][break] "I'll be back in an hour. Try not to - break anything."

[break][break] With a click of the door, Flynn has left, leaving Emma Wolfe in his apartment, all on his own. Nothing except the flickering light of the tv, a stuttering hum in the distance.

Hades, ever since that night where all he had seen was blood and smoke and fear, hadn't settled. He was agitated, afraid, reactive. Emma was the only person in the entire world that he trusted, and he had failed her. She blamed him, he knew, blamed him for the pain she had gone through and the teeth marks that scar her skin.[break][break]

He hadn't been the one that had bit her, but it didn't matter.[break][break]

So when Blue reacts, all teeth and surprise, Hades just sees red.[break][break]

It is fortunate for everyone involved that Flynn steps in, even if it catches Emma by surprise. Her breath catches in her throat at how close he stands, the hair along the back of her neck standing stiff. She can smell him and it is disorienting. Nothing in this room is familiar, not even the frothing werewolf at her heels.[break][break]

Something cold is pressed to her fingers and she numbly reacts, skin brushing skin, to hold onto the glass that is offered. She lets out the breath she's been holding, and the angle of her nose follows Flynn as he retreats. She can hear him sit down onto the couch even if she can't see it, aware of the noise the cushions make as they conform to his shape.[break][break]

But she hesitates even still, skin jumping again when the television turns on. Its static into voices is momentarily alarming, and her cheek tilts to face it briefly, like a nervous twitch.[break][break]

Flynn's voice pervades the white noise of the ravenson the screen behind her. Nudged forward by Hades, Emma approaches the couch to lower herself into it. Every movement she makes is slow and nervous, like she is second-guessing herself, like she is out of place.[break][break]

The woman's stubbornness in the face of food prompts Flynn to get up and leave, as she isn't really listening to him. Only after he's left does she force herself to relax. Her fingers smooth over the arm of the couch, she takes a deep breath, holds itm lets it out slow.[break][break]

And then, when the room is quiet other than the raspy breathing of her Lycanroc and the soft noises from the television, Emma falls asleep on the couch.

[break][break] it's why he picks kung fu pan among all the other shitty chinese restaurants nearby. though their egg rolls were sometimes questionable, they could always be trusted to have effective service. they almost never made him wait, with the exception of that one time their water boiler was broken.

[breka][break] the key is inserted in the door and it clicks, and flynn's half-expecting her to be gone. after all, it's not like she's required to stay... she's not a prisoner in his home, even though she might feel like one. his other expectation is that she has torn his room to shambles, out of sheer pettiness that he'd yelled at her before.

[break][break] none of those things happen.

[break][break] instead... she's asleep.

[break][break] flynn blinks with surprise, setting the still-hot food on the countertop before turning to disappear into his bedroom. blue, sitting up from the spot where she was dozing, follows him. in his hands are some blankets, one of which he drapes carefully over a sleeping @emma without waking her. he then grabs a take-out container from the counter, not even bothering to grab a plate, and sits on the far-end of the couch, scooping up some noodles clumsily with chopsticks.

[break][break] the tv show is mundane at best, a documentary about sealio.

Exhaustion from holding herself together so tightly has forced her to succumb to sleep.[break][break]

She doesn't hear him enter the home, doesn't hear the soft, agitated growl of her Lycanroc curled up where her fingertips dangle from the couch. In fact, she's snoring softly, having found a position on the soft cushions to be nearly painless. [break][break]

More than that, she is warm and secure, to be able to fall asleep as she had.[break][break]

Only when the smell of food reaches her nose and the uneven pressure at the end of the couch gets too much does she begin to stir. Her stomach growls in protest. She hasn't eaten a proper meal in days, grief, confusion, and pain lending to a loss of appetite. [break][break]

The woman's fingers twitch and she instinctively pulls her hand back, violent, as a warm tongue rasps against skin. It is alarming, and she pulls herself into a seated position. The movement forces her to suck in air, pain forcing her to clench her jaw.

[attr="class","textbox"] the noodles are halfway to his mouth when she stirs, waking up from what was probably a peaceful slumber. it's probably a rude awakening to wake up to the delicious aroma of chinese takeout, even though most of is probably just soysauce and a copious amount of msg.

[break][break] he's surprised that she's awake, so much so that one of the noodles falls into his lap. he looks down. "ah, shit, uh, wait a sec." he places the chopsticks and noodles on the coffee table in front of her, before standing up and walking over to the kitchen. the faucet turns on as he runs a cloth underneath it and dabs the wet cloth onto his jeans. when he's done, he decides to grab the rest of the takeout containers and place them in front of her, utensils and all.

[break][break] "not sure what you wanted - i mean, if you wanted something. got a little bit of everything. egg rolls are pretty good," he says, gesturing. "i like them with the hot sauce."

[break][break] he pauses, and then rubs his neck. "i mean, if you want something. if not, that's fine too."

Her hand claps to her face, fingers pressing hard into her temple to quell the agonizing throb. Hades, upon her violent reaction, has withdrawn back to a ball on the floor at her feet. He is clearly distressed by her discomfort, but he does not dare come closer again.[break][break]

She hardly notices even when Flynn stands up that he's gone. His mumbling goes unanswered and he returns seconds later with food and utensils for her to eat and use. She glances between him or where she assumes he might be, and the smell of food coming from the boxes on the table in front of her.[break][break]

"You are.. insufferable."[break][break]

Emma whispers under her breath. The rumble of her belly is louder, however, and she sighs. Movement from her side encourages her to tilt her chin to catch it. He's rubbing his neck, and she can feel how awkward and tense he is. [break][break]

"Can you.. help me..?"[break][break]

She sounds exasperated and irritated, but helpless without knowing what is in each box or how to hold her utensils without looking like a blind fool.

[break][break] flynn can't help it, he huffs a laugh. the sound is short and airy — an exale of air. "not the first time i've been told that." there's something that softens in his expression as he sits next to Emma Wolfe, the sofa creaking gently as his weight is put onto it.

[break][break] "sure." his teal-colored gaze shifts over to the platter of food, wondering which she would like to eat. the memory is brief — a sense of deja vu overwhelms him, as he's reminded of his mother in the hospital. him, heartbroken and distressed, unable to know how to make her feel better.

[break][break] it's the same here too — he doesn't know how to make emma feel better either.

[break][break] "how 'bout some dumplings?" he grabs a fork and drives it into the dumpling, dipping it slightly in some soy sauce before letting it hover in front of her face. "say aaah."

Emma tilts her head toward him, agitated. Most of her pinched expression stems from the throb in her temple, and she exhales softly, exhibiting weakness. [break][break]

"Don't make it weird."[break][break]

But he makes it weird.[break][break]

First he sits next to her, so close that she can feel the warmth of his thigh near her own. It makes her stiffen, but she doesn't pull away. There is no where to go, and she knows, deep down, that he isn't trying to be weird.[break][break]

Okay, well maybe he is. The whole 'say aaah' thing makes Emma stare at him beneath her bandages. There are no words she can use to describe how much she does not appreciate that. Instead, she reaches for the fork and holds out the palm of her hand.[break][break]

"Just pass me it."

She'd meant 'hand me the food and utensil' not 'please spoon feed me like I'm a child.'[break][break]

But that was on her for the splitting migraine and lack of clear instruction and description. Regardless, he does as asked and the box and fork is pressed into her hands. It is warm and smells heavenly, and she pulls it close to her to sit quietly and think for a moment. It is enough, in the moment, to merely hold onto the food, as weird as that is.[break][break]

"Mmm... soup."[break][break]

She feels the man lean back into the couch and she slowly brings a forkful of food to her mouth. Emma chews slowly, savoring it.[break][break]

"I can't see, so it doesn't matter."

[attr="class","textbox"] he's leaning over, halfway about to grab his own cup of noodles, when she speaks again. he blinks. "uh, kay. one sec." he places the chopsticks down and instead reaches for the plastic container that holds the wontop soup. "actually, one more second. this is kind of hot."

[break][break] flynn stands up from the sofa again and head over to the kitchen. there's a bit of cling-clang as he shuffles around for a small bowl, as well as a soup spoon. the one that he chooses is light purple with tiny mightyena engraved in the edges. the paint is chipping, but otherwise in good condition.

[break][break] he pours the soup into the bowl and then gingerly places it in her lap, paying close attention to make sure she can hold it properly before handing it over. "careful," he warns. "it's hot."

[break][break] flynn walks over to the same spot on the sofa again, this top grabbing his noodles and scooping them ravenously down. he settles on the pokemon planet channel — watching the way small poochyena and shinx run across the screen.

[break][break] the words puppy bowl flash across the screen, as the commentator gives adorable names to the various puppies. one of them is named "kibbles".
