"Yeah, it was after Fortree. There was that forest fire, and we had to go our separate ways so you all could evade capture."
Giona pinched the Crush so tightly. He looked like he was scared it'd slip from his grasp. Just blasted himself with a vague medley of mint oils, which blended together into one cool taste. A shoelace-thick line of ash fell off, landing between his shoes. There was a pause.
"And... it's nothing personal. I knew I wouldn't win if she actually fought me, I was just so lightheaded after the air got thin. I got mad when she talked down to us, like we were kids and we didn't know exactly what we were doing."
He dropped a kohl-black ball with a red R printed on it to the floor. It fell with a satisfying 'tink', and a crested bird slipped out. It noticed a window just out of reach towards the back, and made a beeline to it, shoving it open. "There are better ways to pick a lock, sure. It's a fun parlor-trick. I'll stop doing it when it stops getting a pop. Anyways, I'm gonna have Unfezant pull the smell out."
Giona balled up his violet scarf, and passed it to Killian in case he needed to cover his face for a minute. He took as long a drag as he could, as if he were chugging a drink. He pinched his own nostrils, as the crested bird whipped up a cool breeze to carry dust particles out of the warehouse. This'd also put his cigarette out, carrying ribbons of smoke out with it.
He then bent over and picked up the pokeball, calling Unfezant back with a red ribbon of light. Giona shrugged his shoulders, turning to face Killian. "My older brother did. He works at the power plant now. He also showed me how to open a beer by hitting a table without leaving a pile of broken glass on the ground."
Giona then paused, and grinned a little. He decided to circle back. To ask an open-ended sort of question that a parent would pose to their adult child. "So, what's your new job like?"Notes:
