It’s a familiar setting, sitting with his legs dangling in the cool ocean as Nereid paddles them out into deeper water, @chloe and Jett at their side. [break][break]

It had become somewhat of a tradition for their Mantine Surfing outings to be accompanied by the ranger. So, it was only fitting with the tournament in full swing and a crowd spectating on the beach, that all of their combined practice was put to the test. Together. [break][break]

A Mantine Surf Off that had been months in the making between Angelo and Chloe was officially here. [break][break]

“Oakley better cheer for me or I’ll be heartbroken,” he muses with a good-natured jest as he turns to peer over his shoulder. The Drampa that had once belonged to Chloe had been left sitting on the beach, snuggled in a nest of their belongings and entertaining some of Angelo’s younger pokemon. She seems to be watching, too; apparently she’s a brilliant multitasker. [break][break]

“Ready to get this show on the road, Chlo?” Angelo asks, picking his legs from out of the water to stand upon Nereid’s back with ease. [break][break]

Chloe had been looking forward to this day, where she and Angelo would be facing off in a surfing showdown. At first she wasn't aware that this type of format was allowed in the tournament but that didn't stop her from eagerly accepting the challenge. Dressed in a simple black wet-suit, Chloe cocked her head at Angelo's comment. "Sorry Angelo, but she'll be rooting for me mainly!" A eased smile made it's way onto her lips, giving the drampa a wave while jett followed after nereid.

The gathering crowd did make her feel nervous, however reminding herself who she was with helped calm her down. "I'm ready Angelo! Let's give them a great show." She speaks with easy going laughter, perking up when she notices a decent sized wave approaching them.

Giving Jett an encouraging pat, she stands and prepares to face the wave.

"Here we go!"

“You’re trying to sabotage me before we start, aren’t you?” Chloe’s grin and teasing remark is met with one of his own, their pre-battle trash talk taking the form of a petty ‘squabble’ for a certain Drampa’s love and affection. “Using Oakley against me. For shame.” [break][break]

He counters Chloe’s cute wave by blowing a kiss back to the dragon on the beach. [break][break]

“Alright! Let’s show 'em what we've got, Nereid!” [break][break]

Ignoring the wetsuit clinging to the sensitive parts of his back, Angelo braces himself expertly as the Mantine surges forward towards a wave; knees bent and arms loosely positioned outwards naturally. He’d long grown accustomed to balancing atop floats in the water, having grown up with the Tour De Alto Mare every year. [break][break]

Leaning into Nereid, he encourages the Mantine to pick up speed as they begin ascending up the wall of roaring water… Preparing for their first trick: Lanturn 360! [break][break]

"..well" words trail as lips form a smirk. There was no point in hiding it, Angelo saw right through her. Shoulders roll backwards and she laughs softly "Caught me" Chloe states her tongue stuck out in a playful manner.

The joking ends swiftly, as the first wave is in sights. Much like how Angelo braces himself, Chloe also gets into position. She gives Jett a quick tap, resulting in a increase of speed.

"Let's do this Jett!" She shouts out quick words of encouragement, legs spreading out evenly and knees bending.
Riding the wave successfully, they also attempt their first trick: Mantine 180!

Nereid twirls in an arc in mid-air, gliding back towards the ocean blue with fluttering fins and Angelo maintaining his footing on her back. It’s a smooth landing and they skim along the perfect temperament waves with salt spray splashing. [break][break]

“That’s one down,” he calls over his shoulder, watching Chloe for the briefest heartbeat as she clears the wave, too. “Who’d you reckon will fall off first?” Angelo’s smile flashes, taking note of his surfing companion not far behind; it motivates him to push a little harder, to go a little faster, with her nipping at his heels. [break][break]

Leaning down, he gives Nereid an encouraging pat before returning back to his balanced stance, guiding her towards the next wall of crashing blue.[break][break]

Warmed up and daring to be a little bolder, Starmie 720 seems like the next best choice…

The moment they catch air, Chloe grins. Her heartbeat accelerating with excitement. Jett gracefully flies in the air for a few moments, her large wing span like fins allowing the team to stay airborn and do a small spin. When they land, water sprays over them and Chloe exhales a hand tucking away some hair that got loose.

"Great job, jett." Chloe gives her mantine a stroke well done before looking over towards Angelo, based on his expression he also managed to pull of a trick - a shame she wasn't able to witness it. She's taken back by his comment, a playful chuckle before answering it.

"My bet is that you will." She winks teasingly, glancing back too notice another fairly sized wave was heading towards them. "Here comes the second one Jett!" Once again the two of them swim towards the wave, trying to catch up to ride the waters.

Chloe settles on doing a simple trick for now, just to keep things safe.

Chloe is right. Angelo is the first one to fall off. [break][break]

After tumbling through the water at the current’s mercy, he breaks through the surface with a spray of salt droplets and a determined set to his jaw. “Had to open my mouth…” He utters under his breath, although the small curve of his lips gives away that he doesn’t mind too much. [break][break]

Especially when Chloe also appears to have pushed her luck…[break][break]

Nereid dives underwater to scoop him back up and they cut across the sea surface to meet the brunette, a laugh filling the space between them. “C’mon loser, the next wave's coming.” Angelo encourages her with a competitive jab, picking himself back up onto his feet as Nereid pushes onwards. [break][break]

Third time’s the charm… Or so someone once said.

Chloe loses her balance mid surf and ends up falling off Jett's back, water splashing up wildly when she fell. She resurfaces rather quickly, Jett was ready for her and Chloe situates herself on her back again. Laughing loudly at Angelo's playful tease "Karma isn't nice at all"

She states with a smile, balancing herself on Jett as she noticed another wave was coming.

"We'll see who the true loser is by the end of this match!" Chloe challenges Angelo, and has Jett swim towards the oncoming wave. "We got it this time, Jett!"

“Damn, the ocean's got it in for me today, huh,” he says, shifting the blame as another dunking leaves Angelo pulling himself back up onto Nereid. [break][break]

Was this payback for kicking a particular sailor’s ass in their own race the other day? Maybe. Angelo wouldn’t have put it past his ‘roommate’ to convince her fishie friends to sabotage him. [break][break]

Shaking his head, saltwater droplets flying off brunette strands, he takes to his feet to tackle another wave. “C’mon, Nereid. It’s not over yet.”

Wahh!!" Chloe cries out as she once again loses her balance, crashing into the ocean face-first. The impact a lot more painful compared to her previous failure. She really called upon karma by talking so much trash to Angelo earlier..

Jett is quick to come to Chloe's aid, worried that the fall may have caused an injury - luckily it didn't.

"Thanks Jett..!" Chloe says slightly out of breath as she resurfaces, struggling to get back on her mantine's back after the fall.

After a moment to catch her breath, she climbs onto Jett, watching as Angelo pulls of a successful trick. "Cmon Jett! We can't let him win so easily!" Her mantine cries out in agreement, swimming after their competition and prepares to ride the next wave.

After the last two failed attempts, Angelo had concentrated his efforts into tackling the waves, rather than pulling off a gravity defying trick. [break][break]

This time however, after managing to finally sail over to the other side of a large swell of water without being plunged into the ocean’s mercies, felt right. This was it.[break][break]

“Now or never.” Speaking less to Nereid and more to himself, Angelo braces himself with a sharp flash of teeth, relishing the sensation of salt on the breeze rushing over his wet skin. Adrenaline thrumming as they begin the ascent. [break][break]

This time, he’d perform a successful Over the Gyarados!

After failing the last few waves, the pair finally managed to get it together.

Staying perfectly balanced ontop of Jett, they ride the side of the wave gaining more speed, jett accelerating faster and faster until they reach max speed. Chloe felt confident, that they could pull this one off. Bending her knees Jett leaps from the wave, spinning left and right in the air and the two preform the starmie 360 in a splendid manner.

Fate is a cruel mistress but the waves are even crueller. [break][break]

And on top of that list sits Angelo’s stubborn competitiveness. He’d perform an Over the Gyarados, even if it kills him.[break][break]

“Okay, now it’s now or never,” he amends ~~repeats~~ before climbing back onto Nereid. Underneath the water, where Angelo can’t see, his Mantine rolls her eyes but guides them after Chloe all the same. [break][break]

Noticing that things weren't going well on Angelo's end, Chloe's confidence builds even more. Wanting to keep their momentum going Jett speeds towards the next wave, swimming along side smoothly to prepare for the next stunt.

It was a risky trick which Angelo failed to do the last two times, but Chloe was willing to risk it. Victory was close and if they nailed this trick it would taste even sweeter.

Swimming at her top speed, Chloe and Jett take flight: Soaring through the air and attempt to spin while landing back into the waters.
