There was something calming about the ocean.

[break][break] Unova had not been like this. At least not Mistralton, where he'd grown up. There, the chief import were the planes and the cargo inside of them. Flynn had spent much of his childhood staring after the landing pad until his grandmother tugged him away from them, scolding him, telling him that it was dangerous for little boys to be there.

[break][break] Many times, Flynn had wondered what it had been like to fly. Years later, he would learn what it was like to dive.

[break][break] And how glorious it was.

[break][break] The Team Rocket agent broke the water's edge in the middle of Route 124, where his boat rental lay. With the latest uptick in missions, he'd gotten a decently sized paycheck. It was an impulse decision, but one that Flynn thoroughly enjoyed as he swam to the boat's edge and pulled himself to the surface. He sat the boat's edge, grabbing a towel and patting his face dry.

[break][break] There was a squeak, and Flynn looked down to see his Sharpedo swimming circles around his recently caught Dewgong. The latter seemed uncomfortable at the shark's close proximity, and Flynn sighed. "Niles," he said, a warning. "Play nice."

[break][break] The shark turned to his own, blinking, pouting and then dipped his head. He wriggled backwards from the sea lion to give some space.

[break][break] Flynn sighed. Niles was still learning — he was barely a pup.

Flynn blinks. It's not that he didn't expect someone to eventually join him - life had a way of fucking up his peace like that - but to see it is someone else from Rocket is... surprising, to say the least.

[break][break] The man shrugs. "Sure." It isn't like he has a choice, anyways, not with the history the two of them have. Reaching behind him, Flynn pops open a cooler to grab a beer for himself and then inclines his head at the other. "Want one?" he says, offering the icy cold beverage to him.

[break][break] Meanwhile, it seems Niles has once again found a new thing to play with. Tail wagging in the water, the shark swims away only to return with the struggling form of a Larvitar in his jaws. "The fuck?" What was a Larvitar doing in the water? Flynn reaches into his belt to press a pokeball to the Rock Skin pokemon.

something propelling through the water draws his attention away. surprisingly, he doesn't call a pokemon out. he reaches for some bait, dangles it in the water, and waits. the barraskewda swims over eventually, snapping at the bait, then continues to linger by the boat as if expecting more.

He hands the can in his hand over to THEO BECKETT, before retrieving another one for himself. With a pleasant hiss, the bottle cracks open and Flynn dips his head back to take a sip. It is then that he hears his superior's question, teal colored eyes flickering over to the other as he does so.

[break][break] "Often's I can," he says with a shrug. This isn't a lie. Much of his work in Lilycove often involved patrolling not only the borders of the town, but the water routes as well. Still, it was much more comforting to be able to do it on his own time, rather than his job — or Rocket's.

[break][break] "You?" Flynn's not much of a conversationalist, but at least he tries.

[break][break] He gently rolls the captured Larvitar into a bag set up underneath another corner of the boat, making a mental note to collect them all and make a much-needed trip to the pokemon center. He knows Niles well enough that this isn't going to be his first altercation of the afternoon.

[break][break] Sure enough, his eyes catch the shark making friends with a Froakie perched on a nearby rock. At least, Niles certainly thinks so, but the frog... maybe not so much. When Flynn feels it's right, he tosses a ball in the pokemon's general direction, watching as the light shimmer's off the ball and into an arc below.

[break][break] He glances towards a shadow flitting just beneath, not too far from where Theo's caught Barraskewda. He doesn't pay much attention to it. Instead, he asks the other, "You like fish?"

which isn't much, but their upcoming mission in sootopolis has allowed him some leniency to explore other interests. not that there are many to pick from, but still.

he reaches for another bit of bait and drops it into the water for the barraskewda. it's only then that he sees something much slower moving beneath it, swimming up to the surface with such beauty and grace that just demands attention.

so he throws another bit to the other side of the boat, allowing him full view of the feebas. he smiles, then throws it bait of a better quality. top grade stuff. the feebas eats it up with no hesitation.

Flynn nods as the other answers him, wondering when the last time that he had fished was. Much of the time, he ended up simply diving, mostly because Niles appreciated it when he had a partner alongside him. And at least, Flynn was one person that the Sharpedo couldn't accidentally bully.

[break][break] Setting his drink down, Flynn stands up and heads towards the back of the boat. He disappears under the bridge for the moment, shuffling around until he can pop open another box, and then reappear. In his hand, he holds two subways, each six inches apart, wrapped pristinely. He tosses one to Theo — it has roast pork in it, mixed with provolone cheese, mushrooms and steakhouse sauce. It's wrapped carefully and meticulously, just like Flynn's own that he peels open as he sits back down next to the Rocket admin.

[break][break] "It's roast pork," he says, biting around his own sandwich. "If you want something sweeter, mine's a Monte Cristo." The sweetness of the jam and ham mix well as Flynn takes another sip his beer.

[break][break] Meanwhile, swimming in the depths of an ocean, is the shadow of a Tentacruel. This time, unlike Niles, his Dewgong approaches it. Glacier is much gentler in his endeavor, pressing his nose gently in a greeting to the pokemon's glowing scales.

[break][break] At the same time, Flynn turns to him just as Theo laments about his love for the fish. "You should try diving," he says. "There's nothing like it, being up close to them like that." There is a softness in Flynn's eyes as he remembers the first time that he went — one of first dates that he had with Thea that were not already soured by their history.

like is an understatement — it's his favorite kind of sandwich. he wastes little time to peel the wrapping back before raising the sandwich for a hefty bite. provolone cheese and steakhouse sauce leak under the pressure, spilling slightly.

"it's good."

really good.

"and you should try fishing."

in fact — he places the sandwich down for a moment and disappears into the back of the boat. he reappears with two state of the art fishing rods and two boxes of bait. he extends one of each over to flynn.

"let's fish."

meanwhile, something flails in the water off to the side. the wild aron struggles to stay afloat; its four short legs do little to help it. thankfully, both barraskewda and feebas float on over its way, lending their fins.

He tries not to be obvious about it, but Flynn finds him catching a glance at the other out of the corner of his eye. He can't help it; it's been a while since he had someone else try his food — the image of Noah flashes in his mind's eye — and he's curious as to what the other thinks. Even though it's hardly homecooked food, he's spent more than enough afternoons as a kid trying to make fun sandwiches for his mother to come home to.

[break][break] As a kid with a single mother, it was their only source of happiness sometimes.

[break][break] "... thanks," Flynn says and he isn't sure himself what prompts the words that follow, but - "Used to make it for my mom when I was a kid. She..." His voice grows uncharacteristically soft. "She liked 'em a lot too."

[break][break] It's been a while since he thought of Ma. He was glad, therefore, for the change in topic. A laugh leaps out of Flynn's throat as the other throws his comment right back at him. "Fair 'nough," he says, crumpling the sandwich wrapper in one hand and grabbing the fishing pole that was handed to him with the other. Glancing backwards, he tosses the wrapper behind him — it slides across the rim of the plastic trash can, and sinks in.

[break][break] Meanwhile, his hands wrap around the rod and clumsily, he reels out a line. Maybe the fish feel bad for him, or it's pure luck, but by the time he reels the line back, there's a weirdly-shaped rock attached to it. The brow on Flynn's forehead wrinkles.

a line is cast; he watches it drift in the water before sinking into murky depths. a key skill to have when fishing is patience, and as someone who's been doing this for years, theo has endless patience. he'd spend the whole day out on a boat and would return home happy even if nothing bit that day.

the fishing rod is soon lodged in place to free his hands. he reaches back for the sandwich, continuing to munch down on it.

when flynn asks, theo's head turns, curious.

"a good catch, that's what."

he shifts, leaning closer from his boat.

"it's a binacle. you see the two orange arm-like shapes? they're actually two binacle living on the same rock. they work together to hunt."

there's a spark in him when he speaks that's possibly unfamiliar, maybe even out of place.

his own line catches, calling for his attention. he reels something back to the surface: a frillish.

"and this is a frillish."
