[attr="class","cian"]occasionally, the faint sounds of knocking invade the air, and though it's soft enough to not be much of a bother, after a while it does become annoying. after thirty minutes, cian's had enough.

he slides out of bed, walks out of his room, and stops by the one right next to him. he knocks four times but doesn't wait for an answer. he pushes through, stepping in after.

"hey, bestie. tell me i'm not losing my fucking mind. you hear knocking, too, right?"

Jayden didn't often stay at the sub.

[break][break] It was a bit surreal for him, since he had spent much of his life on - well - not a submarine, but on similar arrangements within Rocket databases. But there was still something disconcerting about being surrounded by so much water and besides, there were things to be done at his apartment anyway, since it wasn't like his parents' company issues were entirely wrapped up, even if Cillian Quinn had helped him clean up most of it.

[break][break] And yet, despite all of that, there were still some occasions where it was beneficial to be on the sub. Especially with his injuries still healing, it was important to be nearby the Medbay if necessary.

[break][break] It was with this thought that Jayden preoccupied his room. What he wasn't expecting, however, was an interruption - four knocks, and the door latched. Startled, Jayden turned — not having even finished putting on his t-shirt.

[break][break] 'Bestie?' The word, unfamiliar, struck. He blinked and then finished pulling his bed shirt over his head, only responding when his head popped through. He shook his head and then explained, "I was in the shower."

not caring for his intrusion, he walks over to the nearest chair, plops down on it, and leans back, making himself comfortable.

The sight of someone else's eyes on him is enough to make anyone wonder. Except Jayden. The boy doesn't even notice as he pulls his head through the collar of the shirt, completely ignorant to the plights of the other.

[break][break] A pause, and Jayden asks, blinking. "Are you the creep?"

[break][break] The way that it's said is not sarcastic or even funny. It is simply honest. Curious.

[break][break] His gaze follows the other as he plops himself down onto a chair in the room, and Jayden's curiosity increases — he opens his mouth, then closes it. He presses his lips together, head inclined, listening.

[break][break] Sure enough, there it is.

[break][break] Thump, thump, the sound echoes against the walls of the ship.

bestie. the word itself feels surreal, yet familiar — has someone else called him that before? or maybe something similar?

[break][break] before he can spend too much time on the thought, the walls shake with a resonating thump thump that has even jayden mildly alarmed. the fist that slams on the table as a result of it has jayden's gaze drawn to it — and then to the outstretched hand.

[break][break] jayden blinks.

[break][break] "... okay," he says. the boy stands up, ignoring the proferred hand, and instead makes his way to the doorway, something like curiosity prickling at the back of his mind. what could it be? veles' pokeball is hot at his side, begging to be released, but jayden ignore that too.

the door makes no sound as fingertips brush against it, swinging open into the cool hallway. the walls of the submarine are made alloyed steel, perfect for the sound currently reverberating through the walls of the ship.

as they creep along the subway's interior, silence permeating, jayden finds his thoughts going adrift. he knows the general map of the sub, having spent the last several months here, but the details are foggy. after all, it felt like only yesterday that he was introduced to it's existence.

[break][break] he wonders, briefly, what dmitri would have thought of it.

[break][break] so engrossed in his thoughts, jayden is barely prepared when the other's words catch up with him. as such, the boy blinks, blank-stare abounding. "i - " he says, for once, caught off guard. he had not heard the end of the other's words. "i'm sorry. what did you say..?"

[break][break] just as he says this, however, there is a flicker of shadow out of the corner of his eye. jayden's gaze immediately follows it — CIAN MAHER all but forgotten.

a leg leans forward, shoes pressed against the ground. he means to go after the shadow - it is instinct - but there is something that drags him back, something that feels awfully like a gaze pinned on him. reading him.

[break][break]"a cute snack?" jayden echoes, confusion twisting the lines of his features. he is briefly reminded of aleks, of sharp teeth and red eyes and —

[break][break] a hand touches his shoulder.

[break][break] "i asked if you were single."

[break][break] "i just thought i'd try my luck, you know?"

[break][break] the words hit jayden like a freight train, and it's only then that he realizes. a flush dances across his face, neck red. "i - " no one had ever propositioned him like this before, not in a way that was so direct and without the absence of alcohol.

[break][break] it is then he is reminded of a certain other's face. of softness, of gentleness, of a bright yellow luvdisc floating in a tank somewhere in his room. his voice is soft.

[break][break] "i - don't know, " he admits, eventually. he hasn't asked Chu-e Choi what they are, he doesn't know what they are. but he remembers the flash of a computer screen, a memory of words written.

[break][break] did jayden even know what soulmates were? did chu-e?

the hand on his shoulder squeezes, gently — and something inside of him, his heart maybe, squeezes too.

[break][break] it's uncomfortable. jayden doesn't know how to respond to the inquiry, not when he barely knows his emotions himself. as the memories wash over him — of the coffee shop, of the festival, or the night lit faintly by flickering fireflies — jayden's throat closes up. he thinks of Chu-e Choi 's soft face, his bright eyes, the feeling of their fingertips brushing.

[break][break] "who's the fucker that's toying with your poor heart?"

[break][break] "it's not -" he starts, finding himself feeling defensive. chu-e isn't toying with him. in fact, jayden is fairly sure that it isn't intentional. chu-e doesn't know — "it's not like that," he says, turning away, brushing the other's hand off his shoulder. he clears his throat. "the knocking's stopped."
