the two of them sit underneath the shade of an umbrella of a patio table by the beach. most trainers use the beachside cafe as a place to take breaks, though for kyle, this was the place to prepare for the next battle.

he's supposed to fight the gym leader after they got paired, but there were more important things to consider first before they start the match.

the song plays from an ear bud that kyle lends to melody. it's clean and sanitary and without ear wax, unlike other people's who lend theirs without cleaning their ears, because he's a decent person.

"Yeah it's pretty good. It's peppy, it's got a good tempo, good highs and lows so it doesn't get repetitive. It's electronic but small bits synth in there." she comments as she places her finger underneath her bottom lip as she appeared to be deep in thought and analyzing the music closely. Kyle never saw her like this before, she always took her craft seriously and music was an INTEGRAL part of her image so no song could be picked so willy nilly. "I like it!" [break][break]

Afterwards she stood up suddenly "ALRIGHT!" she said confidently as she shot out both of her fists towards the sky. "I'm feeling PUMPED are you ready Kyle?!" she said as a fire was burning extremely bright in her eyes. "Who are you going to use for our battle?! I feel ready to even take you on!" she roars as energy coursed through her whole body.

kyle can only understand some of the words when used in a string of sentences like that, but he can somewhat get what she was trying to say. she liked it so it means it's good.

he smiles when she says that she's ready. her enthusiasm seeps into him as he gets up and stretches his arms upwards. if she's up for a fight, then he's up for a fight too.

"alright..." kyle plays the track again.

"i heard you like herdier so i'm using this."

he throws his pokeball away from the table they were at and releases a stoutland before them. it's ability is sand rush somehow, so that means it should be at home at the beach... or something. he swears some pokemon have abilities he just doesn't get, like sniper drapion or soundproof abomasnow.

Melody grinned "I love herdiers and soutlands and lilipup's they're really cute!" She said grinning at the big ol stoutland that kyle threw out for the battle. She'd used her own herdier but honestly he was still tuckered out from his encounter with John Sullivan and his meltan so she decided to let him rest. [break][break]

Melody actually really wanted to bond a bit further with one of her newer pokemon! She tossed out a net ball and a clump of sand hit the floor before it reformed and shaped itself into a palossand! "A beach side battle with a sand castle pokemon! Perfect!" she comments "I'm gonna snatch the first move! Fortune favors the bold! Palossand use sand storm!" as she was blissfully unaware of stoutland's hidden ability. [break][break]

The shovel on palossand's head spun around and a blast of sand spread throughout the air and whipped up some harsh winds.

kyle opens his mouth to give the first order for his pokemon when he tastes sand, coughs, and then hears someone else approaching them. a pair of trainers, he supposed.

'hey, you guys seem to know each other. wanna do a tag battle?'

a man approaches them, and on his arm was a girl clinging on his arm. he seemed friendly enough that kyle doesn't feel awkward, though his friend gives him a different vibe.

'yeah, i'm, like, a very good trainer. i specialize in sand pokemon so, like, i'm the best. wanna try me?'

kyle turns to melody and lets her decide for both of them.

Right as melody was about to get into a groove, someone came in and messed it all up! Palossand and Melody both looked at them confused. It was obvious that her and kyle were about to battle and these two just came in and interrupted it. She was a bit confused at first "Uhhhh sure. I'm fine with it." she said looking to kyle for a visual confirmation that he was ok with it to. [break][break]

Once she got confirmation though she smiled and nodded back at the two trainers as they released their pokemon. The duo sent out a sandaconda and a stunfisk "You two can have the first move". [break][break]

Stunfisk shot a mudshot at Herdier and and sandaconda used Brutal swing on palossand. [break][break]

Melody ordered her palossand "Quickly! Iron defense!" she says as palossand's skin turned into a steel colored sand for a few moments as it's body collided with the brutal swing.

"take down. sandaconda."

wet, moist mud clings easily to the stoutland's already long fur, grouping each strand of hair into their own clusters brought together by their ends. his pokemon's also hurt, but the damage on his fur was more worrying.

at least its sand rush makes it go fast when it charges straight at the sandaconda. a full body tackle almost knocks the wind out of the pokemon, stacking yet another layer of sandstorm from its sand spit.

seeing damage being done to their pokemon gets the pair to double up on their offenses. they sent the stunfisk's muddy water and and the sandaconda's bulldoze to regain their footing on the battlefield.

Oh hey! It whipped up sandstorms if it?! Nice! What luck! Melody grinned as this gave her an extra edge in battle for her opponenet's slip up. Oh crap a giant wave of water "Palossand! Block it for herdier!" she calls out as palossand sinks into the sand and reappears in front of herdier and tanks the bulldoze and the muddy water as it's water compaction ability activates as well to give an extra defense boost. [break][break]

"Palossand use shore up and regain some health!" as palossand starts to restore it's health by gather a bunch of the wet sand around him and building up it's body. She was gonna leave attacking to Herdier for the moment.

"thank you," kyle tells melody in the most flat tone.

their opponent sees the quick adjustments by the pair, and kyle swears he can hear the girl click her tongue in frustration. they bark their orders and another round starts.

the sandaconda gets a sand tomb around the pallosand following its stunt, while the stunfisk goes up high in the air with a bounce. at least it makes it easy for kyle since there's only one target in the field left.

"ice fang."

with its frost covered maw, it follows its earlier charge with another. this time, it shifts its attack to include a chomp. the poor pokemon starts to crumple in the cold.

Melody gives kyle a silly thumbs up and sticking her tongue out at him in return "No prob bob." she answers him. She watches as stunfisk somehow begins to ascend into the sky. [break][break]

Melody looks up towards the sky trying to spot it as she quickly sees it descending fast "Pallossand grab him!" she orders as pallossand bursts out from underneath the sand and opens it's maw and grabs onto stuckfisk with it "Now giga drain him!" she orders as the life force of stunfisk slowly starts to be sapped away and there wasn't very much the pokemon could do about him as pallossand had an iron grp on it and eventually it passes out. [break][break]

The trainers clicked their teeth in annoyance that they got absolutely trounced on and sent out two more pokemon in their stead. They sent out a camerupt and an excadrill.

with the power of sand rush, the stoutland just charges straight to the first thing he sees: the camerupt.

it starts charging up its attack when the stoutland takes it down. it tips over like a cow, and like a cow, it can't get up fast enough.

surprised by the sudden turn of events, the charged attack still goes through. the eruption blasts on the other side of the field, burning its team mate with its own attack.

"do you like to tip farm pokemon to their sides too when u were little?" kyle asks the city girl.

Melody visibly cringed at the sight of the camerupt tipping over "Ouch." she said to herself "That look like it hurt.." The excadrill immediately got back up and used dig. Kyle had distracted Melody with a question "Oh? Nah I pretty much stayed in the city or went to littleroot town on vacation with my mom." she says. "When in littleroot though I'd only sneak out at night to sing in the forest when she was fast asleep. No cow tipping though." she giggled a bit to herself remembering that time fondly. [break][break]

However he attention snaps back to the battle when she turns and sees her palossand get caught by a dig attack and then slammed with a metal claw, his iron defense and shore up were destroyed from the vicious attacks and knocked out. [break][break]

"Aww damn. Oh well! Onto the next!" she says as she recalls her sandcastle. "Gardevoir go! Trace your excadrill's ability!" she says tracing sand rush and gardevoir began to move around faster. "Psychic it back into camerupt" she ordered as the pokemon was suddenly flung back at his partner again.

"did pokemon go dance around you when you sang at the forest? maybe you're a disney princess."

when he wasn't looking, the camerupt manages to do an earthquake that affects everyone on the field. the stoutland eventually faints and prompts kyle to replace it with his lopunny.

"bounce."

and with that, the lopunny launches himself way up in the air until no one can see it. kyle still wonders why any pokemon would do that, but he digresses.

Melody stared down at kyle very intensely all of a sudden "How did you know that??" she asked extremely confused as to how he could possibly know that. "Did...Did you do the same thing??" she asked him genuinely as she turned suddenly to give gardevoir her command [break][break]
"Gardevoir, hypnosis so they stay still for the bounce attack" she says as Gardevoir's eyes flash pink for a few moments and cause the opposing Pokémon to sleep for this turn. However the sleep would only really work for a short period of time since gardevoir had to spread it's power on two targets instead of one.

kyle turns his head to melody in a snap, a look of disbelief being flashed at the gym leader. he wants to believe that she was joking, but knowing her demeanor, she most likely is not.

"no, that's just weird," he answers truthfully.

the lopunny eventually drops from the sky from her bounce, crashing on both of the pokemon as they had been grouped up earlier. physics and all says that it dealt a lot of damage because of gravity.

"really? you don't find anything weird with that?" he asks again regarding the previous topic, completely forgetting about the fight.
