Though maybe his own lack of faith made him seem cold toward it. "Do you know why people donate, Pryde?" Bill asked, following the other man as they ventured further down the broken halls. The floor was giving way here, leading to open chunks of floor where the ocean was visible below. 

"They want to thank the Church for its work. They want to see it prosper, and grow, and help other people the same way it helped them. And they get what they paid for." A grey and brown fish surfaced, looking at Bill with wet eyes. A Feebas, Bill thought. How appropriate. He caught it, putting the ball back on his hip with the others. 

"I'm not in the Church as a cover story, Pryde. It's the other way around. The Church saved me. And everything I do, every pokedollar I spend, I firmly believe it will better the Church."

"That's a common misconception," Bill answered. "Plenty of religions are puritan and authoritarian, believing in sin and 'original form' and all that nonsense. The Church of Arceus is founded in logic, evolution, and self-improvement. We want the improve the world, not control it."

"Here's a question for you. Imagine that two Pokemon are fighting. For the sake of example let's say they are Durant and Aegislash." Bill said, plucking two Pokemon names out of thin air. "Which one should win. And why?"

“Good to hear that your church seems to be on the more progressive side of things,” Pryde could appreciate that. Though as he ponders about the question the Drifloon on his wrist seems to be pouting over the Misdreavus that tried to give them a MEAN LOOK. She attempts a HEX to knock them back and Pryde uses one of his few remaining pokeballs in an attempt to capture them. [break][break]

“I suppose that depends on the variables, naturally an Aegislash has evolved more and naturally stronger, but evolution has Durant to a point where its weaknesses are limited and it can naturally near moves that Aegislash are weak to,” a bit of a long winded explanation without a definitive answer. “Though I suppose if you were to put two naturally born against one another multiple times over in the end the Aegislash would probably come out on top more times than not.”

Pryde was naturally skeptical, but also ill-informed. His impression of church was common, and wholely natural, though clearly not founded on interactions with the Church of Arceus. "We don't do that sort of thing," Bill said simply, brushing off the barbed remarks. "Other churches only have lies to offer, Pryde. We have tangible proof. Come visit. You'll see."

"As expected you've cut right to the core of the question. There are many elements that would tilt the fight in one way or another," Bill said, stepping around the hulking figure of a Palpitoad. "Evolution, experience, move sets, and weaknesses. These all play a big part in determining who is stronger." Bill visualizing the fight. Like Pryde, he would bet on the Aegislash. That ghostly sword would slice right through the ant's plates. 

"Let's say the Aegislash is winning. Durant is pinned against a tree and the sword is about to fall," Bill slowly mimed delivering the killing blow. "And then a ranger appears." Bill said, halting the downward blow. "She's well meaning, of course. Kind of heart, and hates seeing Pokemon fighting.  She breaks up the fight and, quite without realizing, deprives the Aegislash of food."

"This human has turned the tables. They have deprived the winner of a rightful victory. They have sought to play god and decided the winner for themselves, invariably picking the weaker of the two. Do you see anything wrong with that Pryde?"

"Of course you do," Pryde agrees, though his tone doesn't hide his doubt. Many in religion liked to pretend their gods were real. And claimed to have proof when in the end it all panged on faith. An item he no longer had. [break][break]

For now he listens to the other, ignoring the pokemon around them for now as they posed little interest. "Is this some sort of protest to the natural order that you're getting at?" he decides to question. In some sense seeing this as a trap for if he were to find fault in this, then logically there would be fault in his own work.

"I'm saying that humans overstep their boundaries," Bill said. He bent down, catching a tiny Poliwhirl that was splashing in a puddle. "Conservation and improvement are two very different beasts. Almost opposites."

"If we protect every weak and injured creature, then we eliminate room for competition. We skew the results in favor of the loser. Evolution is cheated and ingenuity is stifled. A true shame, when those are the forces that got us this far."
