For an island boy, Sénon took to the cold better than most. His raging inner fire seemed to balance well with colder climates. It was the tropical life here in Hoenn with all its sun and humidity that made the Head Ranger unable to sit in one place for too long.

The heat kept his pores open and the yielding sweat annoyed him into action, like how actual microwaves agitated food particles until they heated up to explosive levels.

"Are Sinnoh Summers hotter than the ones here in Hoenn?" He wondered if Adrian could relate.

Choosing a pokéball and expanding its size from collapsed to handheld he waited for Adrian to do the same.

"No, Hoenn is Hell's armpit compared to summer in Sinnoh." They had a very temperate climate that varied by location. Snowpoint and Mt. Coronet had persistent boreal biomes, whereas the rest of the country had very mild summers by comparison.

It made him miss home, but enough of that.

"What kind of battle is this?" Hoenn's Star Tournament featured many different kinds of battles, challenges and opponents. Having been through them all, he wondered in what way Senon would now choose to challenge him. Did they have a preference of format or style? Were they going to be taking it casually, or was it meant to be serious?

It was nice to know his internal whining wasn't off base.

Kantonian summers were dry heats and chilled winds carried in by the sea. Cinnabar in particular was quite breezy in the summer.

Even living under a damn volcano wasn't as sweltering as this place. Of course, Mt. Cinnabar was inactive back then.

"Ehhh. Let's not break any sweats or friendships over this one." Of all the friends he'd made in Hoenn it always felt like Adrian was the one he was destined to duel with the most. Likely, because Adrian was the first.

With so many hypothetical historical matches in their overlapping futures, they could take it easy on each other once or twice.

"Best two out of three?" He scrunched up his face, unsure of if his pitch was the right speed for his peer.

Meanwhile, he called out his first of three.

"I was planning on it. I've been running them all ragged," he said with equal parts pride and guilt. "They earned a break, so I'm using some new ones." Delving through the scores of pokemon he owned, he found the one that made the most sense and sent it out. A jack-o'-lantern pokemon of a sorts, its appearances were vastly misleading.

"Works for me, I need to hit up the Pokemon Center soon." With their pokemon settling into the arena as they conversed, he felt the impulse to start firing off orders, before reining himself in just a smidge. "Make your move." Anticipation left him tense.

No point in wasting time. Why not make the match a bit of a speed blitz.

"Toge, Rollout!" Curling into a ball everyone's second favorite Alolan Electric Rodent propelled himself forward aiming to crash into the face of the pumpkin-thing.

Togedemaru used Rollout!

Anticipating only one of a few responses from Adrian the ranger carefully watching and waited to make his next move.

"Worry Seed," he mouths it calmly for the Gourgeist to heed. Although its plump exterior is rocked by the rollout, its utilizes the point of contact to fulfill its task, leaving seeds on the rodent that quickly spring to life before making their target INSOMNIATIC by nature, overriding their previous ability's function. It was a start, if nothing else.

Once the Rolly-Poly started that forceful spinroll there wasn't much stopping it.

The best you could do was let it roll its own inertia away but Togedemaru were terribly skilled at controlling their rolls.

Crossing his arms Sénon merely continued to watch Adrian's pokémon carefully for now.

Togedemaru used 2nd Rollout!

It would lose him two whole turns, but he felt it was worth it.

"Trick-or-Treat." As the gyrating steel rodent came for another pass, Gourgeist would bestow upon it the Ghost-typing for the duration of the battle before being struck by a more forceful blow than the last. And all the while Togedemaru kept building up momentum, circling back around for yet another pass, Adrian expected.

He would have to pick up the slack in order to close this gap.

Softer bodied than his brother the Togedemaru in play currently lacked for the ability to properly tense his body as a proper DEFENSE CURL required.

That inability would be rectified soon but each pokémon's development was to be handled with care.

Togedemaru used 3rd Rollout!
^{Rollout's power is quadrupled!}

Its steering while rolled was so smooth it looks almost automated. Sénon suspected something about the pokémon's electric capabilities allowed it to detect magnetic fields without having to see them directly allowing for them to roll at accelerated speed with such grace.

The same way birds in low-flight avoided cars.

It didn't seem as though Togedemaru was going to miss.

Roll-slamming into the pumpkin the second time seemed to really hit with some force. If it tanked the third blow he doubted it would be able to walk off the fourth, even with Togedemaru's Iron Barbs neutralized.

Whatever Adrian was up to he was running out of time to do it.

"Phantom Force." Gourgeist would shadowmeld just as Togedemaru came in for its third consecutive pass, fading into its own shadow as the pokemon came blitzing past, stitching itself to the opposing pokemon's shadow in so doing. From the safety of this recluse, it could monitor the pokemon, poising itself for the next round.

Their offense was reset, and their defense had been undermined by the measures he'd already taken. Though the tone of the match was less serious, they were still fiercely competitive even when forced to use mediocre means.

Hmph. If only it could be so simple.

Just when he began to let in the hope the third rollout would end things fast it fell through. Rather than Togedemaru missing on his own he was made to miss via ghosthole.

Clever girl. In Sénon's psychological profiling of other trainer's 'battle styles' Adrian was proven more tact than attack.

If the ghost was hiding somewhere it was picking a good vantage point to attack or prep an attack. The Roly-Poly's imperfect moveset made the next call easy to make. "Spikey Shield!" He wasn't supposed to be getting worked up, but for a random one on one it was getting spicy.

Togedemaru used Spiky Shield!

"Oh, well crap." Adrian didn't know Togedemaru knew that move. He'd only ever known Maractus and Cacturne to learn it, and had overlooked the possibility. Gourgeist would blindly attack from the shadows in a furor before gourding itself on the bristled backside of their SPIKY SHIELD. Gourgeist took a few staggered steps backwards, oozing a neon secretion from a few mild wounds. "You aight there?"

Gourgeist seemed determined to continue battling from its posture. Atta boy.

"I honestly wasn't expecting that, Game." He liked to use last names when he was irritated, perhaps it wasn't easy to sneer with the name of a friend leaving one's mouth. Due to their little blunder Adrian and Gourgeist would lose their momentum, and Adrian began to consider the battle more critically. We can't use Phantom Force anymore, they'll just shore up... Adrian had avoided blind aggression, and it may have cost him.

A force he could only describe as "apparitional" slapped his formerly-spiky little white battle ball. Almost hard to watch.

If Togedemaru wasn't quite battled hardened yet, he'd be a notch closer after this.

For Sénon himself, it was a thrill to have the battlefield hammer home that he still had gaps in knowledge of pokémon and their movesets. Not only did he not know the species Adrian was battling with he'd never heard of a move called Trick-Or-Treat before.

He was familiar with Phantom Force however, and noticed the ghost type attack doing more damage than it should have.

Adrian gave him kudos and Sénon made a clarifying point.

"You turned my rolling victory into an uphill battle." He was making the ranger earn his victory, no doubt. "I'm not counting you out yet."

With most of his pokémon's moves and ability neutralized he would need luck to Paralyze and 'Flinchlock' his way to victory. In truth Adrian had the battle won, it was on Sénon to turn the tables around. "Toge, use Spark!"

But Senon was right, he shouldn't count him out just yet.

Charged with arc energy, Togedemaru afflicted Gourgeist with paralysis, crippling their advantages. "Gourgeist, Shadow Ball!" But it would be wracked with debilitating spasms from the SPARK that had marred its gourd hide, spelling disaster for Adrian.

"Well shit." Biting his lip, he wasn't sure he could come back from this.
