It was with a calm yet almost illegible expression that the man read the magazine article, his gaze diligently wandering from word to word and all too rarely allowing himself to break this pace with a pause. Usually, he wouldn’t have bothered with something like this, especially not when he could have found the very same article online, but it was nice to have some light reading to do when spending a whole day at the beach, under the sun. And really, there was also always something kind of amusing about a desperate attempt at a hit piece (this Laurence Anderson guy probably only had himself to blame for that one though, if we’re being honest here).

There was a light breeze, and for a few seconds, the man closed his eyes – allowing himself to enjoy it from where he lay in the shade of tall palms. Except that, for some reason, the enjoyable chill of the air was gone as soon as it came, and in its disappearance it was replaced by the scalding heat of Lilycove’s summer. When he opened his eyes once again, there was no longer any shade, as if he had been lying down in the middle of the beach all along. The Glaceon that had been napping by his side didn’t look pleased at all.

”What the hell…” Using the magazine to shield his gaze from the rays of the sun, he looked up, confirming what should have been obvious by now: the palm trees were gone. In fact, he could even see them running away! A dozen or more Alolan Exeggutor heading inland, some of them with their treetops (leaves? hair?) on fire.

Oh, hell no! Those things weren’t just going to take away his shade like that! It was unacceptable.

He at least allowed himself to retrieve a couple of pokéballs and his sunglasses, and clad in no more than swim trunks and designer slides (magazine still in hand), Mars headed in the direction the trees had gone – all of his other possessions left behind under the watchful eye of his trusty Glaceon.

Meanwhile, not too far away…

There was someone hobbling along, swinging a sunflower-decorated umbrella with his left hand at the incoming Volcarona that were cackling, mocking him even.

“Why did you do that?!” he exclaimed at the flock of Volcarona—the ones who had decided to set the Exeggutor herd’s heads on fire.

“Are you that heartless?!”

What made this harder was the fact that he was still hobbling around with a crutch, as he couldn’t fully place weight on his right foot just yet. Ouch.

“Go away!” he shrieked, swinging the umbrella fruitlessly at the cackling horde of Volcarona.

Gee, what a time to be caught without a single Pokémon that was a Water-type…

Mars had hurried, but he hadn’t run, because honestly he didn’t care much if the Exeggutor were doing okay or if they destroyed anything in their path. He just wanted his shade back. Was that really too much to ask? Was he being unreasonable? Probably, since the poor Exeggutor had their heads on fire and all that, but of course Mars didn’t even bother thinking about that.

When seeing some pale and arguably kind of strange guy swatting a bunch of Volcarona with an umbrella, he paused, allowing himself to just watch for a second. What the hell was he doing? Did he really think he would achieve anything with that? An eyebrow was raised, but it came with a smirk, because the brunette couldn’t help but think that there was something stupidly funny about it. Yeah, definitely one hell of a sight.

With the click of a pokéball, a Milotic appeared onto the field, Mars nodding at it before the pokémon rose up to the skies. It traced circles, dancing, and with its dance came clouds of rain – a light drizzle falling upon them and beginning to douse the flames. At the same time, a water gun was shot from the ground at a couple of Volcarona, the Slowking responsible looking calm and unimpressed.

”Need a hand?” Was all Mars said, smirking at the stranger.

Just as he was about to take another swing at the cackling Volcarona—the skies above him darkened.

He had 0.5 seconds to look up before he realized that the weather outside the area was still perfectly sunny, thank you very much, and that a localized Rain Dance had began pouring around him.

The Volcarona were now hissing in displeasure—even more so when another Water-type attack came splashing all over them.

He wondered who this mysterious ‘savior’ was.

“Yes, please,” he wailed as he leaned on the crutch. “I don’t have a single Water-type with me.”

The hand holding the umbrella lowered, before he remembered—

“Have you seen a bunch of trees running away pretty recently?”

Water fell on him. It drenched his hair, dripping down his face and then his chest. It was no more than a drizzle: light, gentle, and pleasing in nature. But, it was water nevertheless, and most people probably wouldn’t have been very happy to suddenly be getting their clothes wet. Not him though. For starters, it didn’t really matter if his swim trunks got wet, and also… how could he complain when it was such a nice relief from the heat that consumed Lilycove’s beach that day?

He just stood there, under the light-rain, warm gaze fixed on the stranger. ”Yeah? Guess I came at just the right time then, huh? No worries,” he laughed, his expression marked by a confident smile. So this guy was looking for the Exeggutor too, huh? Had they also taken his shade? As Mars saw it, the guy looked like he could use a tan, but maybe he was one of those weird people who hated the sun.

”Pretty sure they went that way. I’ve been looking for them too.” Mars pointed in the direction with his thumb, then calling the Milotic and Slowking back to their respective pokéballs before beginning to walk as if nothing had just happened here. And yet, a grin was shot at the stranger. ”Come on, we don’t wanna lose them!”

”Martín del Mar, by the way, nice to meet ya.” A hand was offered for the other to shake.

“Yeah, those trees,” he confirmed with a nod, finally lowering the sunflower-patterned umbrella down beyond smacking distance as the Volcarona were finally driven away by the gathered rain that was pouring over the area.

As they moved away from the area where there was a bunch of clouds pouring out water despite the rest of the beach being bathed in sunshine, he nodded again.

“They don’t like fire, obviously, although why do they have exaggerated necks? The Exeggutor I’m familiar with are literal stubby sentient coconut trees,” he added before the other introduced themselves.

“You can call me Alex,” he introduced himself, shifting the umbrella so it was resting on his shoulder before shaking the other man’s hand. “Uhh… how do you pronounce your first name again?”

He was embarrassed, okay.

Did this guy really not know? Ah, well, it wasn’t like everyone went on Summer vacations to resorts at Poni Island, right? Maybe the Alolan variants of pokémon weren’t all that common in Hoenn, just like Galarians...

”I hear that aside from grass, they’re even dragon type instead of psychic.” Mars kept chatting casually as they walked, and for a second there, he considered actually bothering with catching those Exeggutor. But, what was the point if they were ugly and weren’t even Psychic type? A waste of a perfectly good pokéball.

On the other hand, it wasn’t as if they were hard at all to track down; the destruction they left in their wake was impossible to miss, with occasional falling ash, broken branches, and giant footsteps being left on the ground. ”Martín.” The man repeated, even though he knew it wasn’t likely this Alex guy would get it right with just saying it one more time, and he really didn’t feel like having a back and forth where he corrected him on that. ”You can just call me Mars though.”

“They’ve got really long necks, don’t they?” he quipped quietly in Mars’s direction.

Okay, Mars—that was something much easier to pronounce.

“They used to be an uncommon sight around here—at least until the Alolans started showing up en masse. However the native trees here are still the stubby Exeggutor you find around here,” he remarked as they passed ash-strewn sand marked by large, deep footprints.

“Just have to put the fire out and they’ll calm down—hopefully,” he continued as he wielded the sunflower-patterned umbrella like a sword, in case more of the cackling Volcarona decided to show up and be ultimate shit heads.

Alex was a bit of a strange man. First he seemed confused as to why the Exeggutor looked different, but then gave his reasoning as to the sudden influx of Alolan species in the region. And was he really assuming Mars was a foreigner because of his name and accent? He wasn’t wrong, of course, but just because he was a foreigner, that didn’t mean he knew nothing about Hoenn...

”Yeah, they should be pretty close. Do you have any pokémon on you? You could help with trying to keep the Volcarona at bay if they come. I doubt that’ll do much.” By ‘that’ he meant the umbrella, which he nodded towards with a smirk just as he said those words.

He was right though, the Exeggutor were close, as they only had to walk a few more steps for the sound of their distress to be audible. They stood at a clearing a few metres away, distressed and shaking their heads in pitiful attempts to get rid of the fire.

This time, Mars called out a Drizzile, because his presence would probably be less concerning or obvious to the Coconut Pokémon than that of his large Milotic.

”Go over there, then use Rain Dance and Water Pulse.” The man calmly said, and so the little water lizard did.

“Well…”

Shuffling around made him pull out a faded, banged-up and scuffed Friend Ball, before popping the shrunken marble to full size and then sending out its occupant—a blue-plumed Braviary.

“I don’t have anything that has a Water-type move, however I got him,” he gestured as the avian shook himself and ruffled his feathers for a bit.

“Keep an eye out behind us, will you? If you see any Volcarona… drive them away,” he remarked, leaning over and giving the Braviary a head pat before the avian took off in the opposite direction.

“At least we have our backs covered. Hopefully those trees will calm down!” he added with a chuckle as the cool, refreshing rain began to pour around the area.
