She stared back at the head ranger, unabashed with her newly broken and bandaged nose. Of course, she recognized him, as he was on shirts everywhere. But she also vaguely remembered running into him at the bar, as well, a couple of nights prior; right before her brief scuffle with had broken out.

“Ah. Hello, Lars. We meet again.”

Reaching for two pokeballs at her side, she then released Tyranitar and Onix to the field between them.

“What happened to—oh. So it was you she was talking about,” he remarked the moment he saw the broken nose.

“Yeah… don’t mess around with her especially after several rounds of tequila,” he added with a chuckle.

An Onix and a Tyranitar awaited on the opposite side of the battle grounds—here’s to hoping he could handle this.

Two red beams of light revealed a Gyarados and a Flygon. While admittedly the Flygon was an unusual choice, there was a reason he chose Javert to fight alongside Kali today.

“Go,” was all he said to the two, and the Gyarados bellowed at the heavens, before dark clouds surrounded the arena and a torrential downpour started—Rain Dance having come into play.

A loud Screeching noise came from the Flygon right afterward.


Gyarados used Rain Dance (1 / 5), and Flygon used Screech!

So, the captain was talking about her now. Lulu snorted lightly. Then, she realized. Tequila? Didn’t drink rum? Her head twisted at an angle curiously for a moment.

“Maybe.” She said back simply at first.

“That’s probably for the best, mate.” Never mind that Lulu was probably just as much trouble, clear by the bandages on her face.

Some people just couldn’t hang. Maybe Lars was one of them.

The flying types were released.

Immediately, the Onix sent a DRAGON BREATH towards the Gyarados. The terrible SCREECH let out by the Flygon was enough to rattle the Tyranitar—so much that it went 0 to 100, letting loose an impressive HYPER BEAM straight towards the noisy bug-type with monstrous irritation.

“I’ll take note of that,” was all he managed to say before the whistle signifying the start of the tournament blared throughout the arena.

The incoming blast of draconic energy was met with a sudden gale-force burst of Hurricane winds; the better to dispel the incoming attack.

Over on the Flygon’s end, the beam of light headed its way was a sign that he should get out of the way—but well, flying lower and closer to the ground allowed Javert to slap his tail on the ground to cause a powerful Earthquake that shook the area.

Whoops.


Torrential rain is pouring on the battlefield! (2 / 5)

Gyarados used Hurricane to block the Dragon Breath, and Flygon flew low to avoid the Hyper Beam before using Earthquake!

Onix’s DRAGON BREATH was evaded by the force of HURRICANE winds, sending the ongoing TERRENTIAL RAIN pummeling its rocky body. It gave a cry of pain, and Lulu winced a little, knowing they were at clear disadvantage there.

Angered, the serpent retaliated with a DOUBLE EDGE.

Tyranitar, still RECHARGING from the previous HYPER BEAM, ended up simply falling over from the shaking of the EARTHQUAKE. It gave a startled cry as it did so. Whoops, indeed.

Due to the nature of Hyper Beam, this left the Tyranitar wide open—and while the Flygon reacted quickly, moving in to block the incoming Double-Edge, the Flygon this time moved forward, coasting in with a Rock Slide shield; an attempt to block the incoming Onix.

The Gyarados then switched targets—going for the Tyranitar with a full-force blast of powerful Waterfall waves of aquatic energy.

Gyarados used Waterfall on Tyranitar, and Flygon attempted to block the incoming Onix with Rock Slide!

The DOUBLE EDGE was blocked by the ROCK SLIDE, sending the Onix off course and roaring with pain and frustration. The RECOIL damage it took meant that it had done more harm for itself than good. That was unfortunate.

Gyarados was then incoming with a WATERFALL, which hit the Tyranitar squarely and knocked it over.

Lulu was wide-eyed at the turn of events. “Tyranitar! DARK PULSE!”

It was sent towards the Gyarados in spiraling rings—one the ranger would soon be witness to again from another, much more powerful being on her team.

Meanwhile, the Onix used DIG to disappear into the ground.

Thank fuck the Onix threat was quelled—for now. The incoming Double-Edge was blocked; and the serpentine rock Pokémon sent off-course.

However there was something else—coming!

The Gyarados roared angrily as the serpentine Pokémon had made to go underground, however another blast of Waterfall energy soared through the air towards the Tyranitar.

Tanking the Dark Pulse, the giant tempura wasn’t going to go down easily.

“Javert! Careful!” he called out, before the Flygon decided ‘fuck this, let’s go,” and then slapped his tail on the ground, causing another Earthquake without realizing it.

Gyarados used Waterfall on Tyranitar once more, and Flygon slapped the ground with an Earthquake!

The second WATERFALL was enough to topple the Tyranitar—and leave it FAINTED on the ground. Lulu sighed and returned it to its pokeball, almost resigned to their loss at this point. This had been a bit ambitious with two monsters she had never quite trained before.

For a moment, she had no Pokemon on the field. Awkward. The scientist stared over at Lars for only a moment, before he commanded his team, and an EARTHQUAKE rattled the ground.

Onix promptly shot up out of it with a pained roar, and Lulu followed it up into the air before it came back down again—diving straight for the Flygon with another DRAGON BREATH.

The rain was going out soon; therefore he knew that he had to seize the chance to attack.

The Onix re-emerged soon afterward, trying to take down the Gyarados; however the gigantic maw of the angry tempura monster serpentine Pokémon opened up wide, tanking the Dragon Breath and attempting to Crunch at the Onix.

Flygon provided covering fire with another Rock Slide.

Gyarados used Crunch on Onix once more, and Flygon supported from the side with a Rock Slide

The powerful CRUNCH of the blue dragon might’ve been enough to bring it down all on its own, but then another ROCK SLIDE came, and dragged it to the ground, securing its fate decisively. It FAINTED, curling motionless between jagged ground and sand.

Lulu returned the rock monster with a sigh.

“Well. Strong team you've got. Thanks for the battle!”

She was about to walk off when she paused a moment.

“Hey, I didn’t get to ask you at the bar. What’s it like being an Avatar?”

He was surprised at the win; but secretly pleased nonetheless.

The question caught him off-guard, though.

"Wait, why that particular question?" he inquired back.

People normally don't just come out of nowhere and ask certain questions; this being one of them. It threw him off for a few moments.

"There are ups and downs. Not everything is as glamorous as it's made out to be. Why do you want to know?"

Her head tilted to the side with what might’ve looked like curiosity. Maybe it was genuine, somewhere beneath her own secret joke.

Glamorous. Oh, the fame of the ones that could stand in the light. For , , Lulu… for those of them that couldn’t, all that awaited them was infamy.

In that moment, there was the twinge of resentment, but it didn’t show in her smile.

“Just curious.”

She remained, seeming not to be quite satisfied with his answers yet. Maybe she was crazy, or drunk? Her bandaged face and the one time he’d met her might’ve made it a solid guess.

“Do you ever feel cold?”

Lulu gave a small laugh, smiling, and waving it off. She wouldn’t press with any more questions that afternoon. And, with the way things would go, probably not ever. Time would tell!
