the water balloon feels weighty in his palm as he stares at it. the semi-translucent gleam up plastic swirls with forbidden liquid as he raises it to the light, expression curious.

[break][break] the court is separated into two sides, only separated by a chalky white line in the middle of it. there is a referee sitting on a lifeguard booth not too far away, though the man seems far less interested than what might assume. he is scrolling through his phone amiably, the same soul-sucking expression of any underpaid teenager forced to participate in something because of his parents.

[break][break] the rules are simple — knock out as many pokemon as you are able, as quick as you are able.

[break][break] getting your opponent wet — a consolation prize, of sorts.

prince, from the second they had a water balloon in their hands, was tempted to toss it— but also, they really didn’t want to deal with the aftermath of dropping it and getting wet. that was a job for someone on the other side of the court (like prince wouldn’t take the opportunity to throw balloons at whoever got in their way). the referee doesn’t seem to mind either way, and in the chaos...well, nobody would actually know what’s happening. it’s all in good fun, anyways, and a good break from the battling prince has done all morning.

their attention was drawn to jayden cross fairly quickly, mostly because he was the closest and probably the easiest target right now. with a subconscious grin stretching across their face, prince threw the water balloon towards him, hoping it didn’t hit the ground just before him at the very least.

he's prepared — he always is.

[break][break] of course, his pokemon are even moreso. his inkay who had been hiding with camouflage flickers into view just as his opponent's balloon comes spiraling towards him. a night slash cuts the offending assailant in half, water splashing just before jayden's feet.

[break][break] the boy blinks. his gaze snaps over to the offender — prince garrido — and immediately, his arm flings forward, balloon spiraling through the air.

[break][break] above him, his inkay's body glows with white-hot energy before rings of hypnosis sling through the air towards their competitors.

prince wishes he was half as prepared as jayden and his pokemon had been; as it is, he almost winces when the inkay appears out of nowhere, cutting the balloon in half before it can hit jayden. of course, any reaction that he has is totally lighthearted- and a part of him is tempted to let the balloon hit him as some temporary relief from the heat. cypher, his mawile, moves faster, though, snapping towards the balloon in a lighthearted attempt to use crunch. it pops in its jaws, however, and it's too preoccupied with that to notice the hypnosis beams floating towards it.

the effect is immediate, if the mawile's yawn is any sign. prince just hopes it'll stay awake so he can have a hope of winning this battle. it seems unlikely, but prince is already reaching for another water balloon while keeping an eye on the pokemon in question before tossing it back at jayden cross.

guess this was becoming less of a free-for-all and more of a targeted water balloon fight.

once more, the balloon comes for him.

[break][break] it's not a surprise. after all, when you see a target, it only makes sense to take aim.

[break][break] still, jayden is able to jump to the side just out of the radius of the throw. the water splashes against his shoes and seeps into the sand below.

[break][break] surprise flickers in his eyes when there is a cry from behind him. water splashes against his durant causing the pokemon to faint. it seems that when jayden was distracted, someone else from the opposing team was able to knock his pokemon unconcious.

[break][break] frowning, jayden's arm snaps forward. "sven! superpower!" he hands the filled waterballoon to the malamar, who takes it in it's fin and with white-hot power surging behind him flings it heavily across to their opponent's side.

this time, at least the inkay wasn't a problem- although the balloon had still missed its target, and prince huffs out a lighthearted sigh in response. the mawile at their feet, however, is asleep on its feet, and for a moment prince debates nudging another pokemon over to guard it. but that's a bad idea, they realize just as quickly; either way, unfortunately, the chances of the mawile making it through this battle are slim.

with the water balloon flying heavily to their side, prince snaps their fingers at the swirlix to get their attention- but it's doesn't get up quick enough. the water balloon slams into the mawile, and it faints with a quiet cry. sighing, prince moves to get another water balloon, despite the realization that this is a losing battle.

"scorpio. string shot." the swirlix, now in a more active position, sprays string towards their opponent- right as prince reaches to fling another water balloon, this time towards jayden cross's malamar.

jayden is usually nimble on his feet — but maybe not nimble enough. it's more that he is expecting a water balloon thrown at him, not a tangle of sticky string that gets caught in his skin as he throws his arms up to brace for the contact.

[break][break] meanwhile the water balloon splashes against the malamar, who makes a dramatic groan as it slumps to the ground. jayden's gaze shifts to him, unimpressed.

[break][break] "lampe." the chandelure appears in front of him, and he warms his hands by her flames to burn the sticky string to release himself.

[break][break] meanwhile, his weavile lets out a cackle as she sends an ice shard at her opponent. frozen daggers go flying along with a frozen water balloon, spiraling towards prince garrido 's head.

prince bites back a laugh when he realizes that not only did his swirlix's move hit, but the water balloon finally reached its target. there's a strange bit in pride in knowing he finally managed it, even if one of his pokemon had been taken down beforehand. it doesn't last long, though, because his opponent's weavile is cackling; and sending ice shard, and a frozen water balloon, directly at his head. instinct kicks in long before the balloon even comes close enough to reach, and he ducks down, letting it sail just over his head, spiraling past him to hit the swirlix who had moved back to its spot. the results were near immediate, but prince was still focused on the events of just a few seconds ago to do much about his frozen pokemon.

despite knowing logically he probably wouldn't have, prince can't help from wonder; did he almost fucking die?

the sylveon beside him makes an attempt to use baby-doll eyes, although prince assumes the chances it will do much to jayden cross or his pokemon are slim. but if they have to be back on the offensive, so be it.

it had sure felt like jayden cross had tried to take them out. one less opponent on the other side of the court, they supposed- if the ice daggers had hit their target, of course. survival instincts sure were a miracle.

the sylveon at their feet immediately looks like his pride was hurt at the gothorita's fake tears, and, despite themselves, the humor of it all had prince laughing. between the timing and the genuinely distraught stare from their pokemon- which quickly turned into a glare once the sylveon noticed- who could blame them?

"light screen." it's half-huffed out after that bout of laughter, and the sylveon seems a bit spitefully reluctant to do it. but it's either him or the frozen swirlix left standing- a losing battle either way, considering.

his opponent uses a light screen to buffet the ballons sent from jayden's team to the other side. the water splashes against the translucent screen, dripping down onto the sand below.

[break][break] it just won't be enough.

[break][break] "brick break!" his clobbopus runs forward. the tiny ocotopus surprisingly fast across the sand as he leaps forward high, fists glowing and aims to shatter their opponent's defense. when it's clear, jayden throws a balloon.

the defense works well enough, but prince still flinches back at the impact of the balloon against the shield. it doesn’t last long, though, because their opponent’s clobbopus rushes forward to break it, leaving them open again. this time, though, there’s no ice-dagger danger coming with the water balloon. they still jump out of the way, and it splashes against the swirlix, causing it to faint.

guess it was just prince and their sylveon, now. in a split second decision, prince picks up a water balloon and tosses it, hoping to at least take another pokemon out.

it does more than take one pokemon out — it takes two.

[break][break] link and dimas aren't paying attention. the pancham and riolu are squabbling with each other, grappling in the sand and don't notice anything around them. it isn't a surprise when the water balloon crashes into them both, causing them to faint.

[break][break] he walks over to the supply of water balloon and weighs it considerably in his hands before releasing his gulpin. the small pokemon blinks in confusion. immediately, his clobbopus begins stuffing water balloons in the other's mouth, then holding the pokemon like a gun and chucking out the water balloons with spit up.

it was just prince’s luck that the water balloon took out two pokemon. sure, they were wrestling and not paying attention, but that doesn’t stop the grin from stretching across their face at the realization.

it fades just as fast— first in confusion, and then in an ‘oh shit’ realization at the fact that water balloons are being shot at them. in the midst of trying to avoid the water balloons themselves, they trip over quartz, who had been hit by a stray one- and, in the struggle to right themselves, are hit directly by another.

despite that, they laugh again- this time louder and joyful, despite their obvious loss. it had been fun!
