The music was loud, the street crowd was wild, and the air was charged up with the energy of a tournament drawing to close.

A young man pushes his way through the crowd after someone's caught his eye amongst them, approaching her like he's inviting her to dance. His sunglasses come off, and those sweet words are thrown her way, louder than the crowd.

"Hey there! M'name's Doug Sullivan!" He says, before flicking a badge seemingly out of his wrist and into his grasp. "Saw one of yer battles earlier! Was quite impressed! Fancy a battle for this 'ere badge? Win or lose, all ya gotta do is yer best!"

The crowd goes wild as they realize a gym leader and a possible challenger are among them.

"Are...a-are you talking to me?" It's pretty obvious that he is. But Luka points at herself anyways, absolutely dumbfounded. Because there's no way he's talking about her, right? Maybe she has a doppelganger amongst the crowd. For there's nothing impressive about her battling skills, at least to her mind. What could he possibly be impressed by?! How quickly she can lose? [break][break] "G-gosh, um... The cheering of the crowd is impossible to ignore. Luka stands there like a deerling in headlights, unsure of what to say. Battling is what she's here for...but to suffer a loss around all these people? It sounds so humiliating! But wouldn't it also embarrass him to turn him down in front of all these people? Oh gosh...[break][break] "I, erm...I-I'm flattered? That is, um! I...s-sure! We can have a match." The words slip out too quickly for her to take them back. "Yeah I am!" Doug said with a bark of laughter, seeing the disbelief in her face. He simply winked as he produced two netballs. "It ain't always about winning, missy!"

Sometimes, it was tactis. Sometimes, it was grit. In her case... It was her connection with her pokemon. There were certain types of trainer Doug wanted to see more of in the pokemon world, and in Hoenn's League- and she was one of them.

The youth spun on his heel, the LEAGUE APPROVED SILPH BATTLEFIELD SYSTEM activating beneath the two and spreading outwards to create their battlefield, the people around them crowding around the barrier with loud hoots and cheers as the battle began.

"Doubles!" He said after a moment, theatrically lifting his arm to the air, badge between pointer and middle finger. "Show me yer link with yer pokemon, missy!"

He turned around, net balls in hand.

"And don'cha worry 'bout this crowd. This slum 'ere is all good people! I know- I lived here!" He said with a cheerful grin, prompting a happy ovation from their onlookers.

Okay, so this is happening. [break][break] Okay, this is happening!! Luka stares after the gym leader as if in a daze, and has to lightly smack her cheeks to snap herself out of it. It's all a little overwhelming...the crowds, the music, the battlefield erupting from nowhere. It's enough to make any rookie start to lose their mettle, and it's not like Luka has much to begin with! [break][break] "R-right! I'll, um...that is, we'll do our best!" Luka carefully chooses two love balls, cradling them gently in her hands. Her heart is hammering so loudly she's afraid it might be heard, but she takes a deep breath and attempts to calm herself. This isn't her first battle. She needs to focus, needs to remember everything she'd learned from her previous losses. What was it that Evette Moreau had said? She's the anchor holding her team together...that's right! They're putting their trust in her, so she can't let them down. [break][break] The noise of the crowd is a dull roar in her ears. Luka smiles nervously as she releases her two Pokemon: a Musharna and Eevee emerge in a shower of hearts from their ball seals, prompting another cheer from the onlookers. "We'll do our best!" She repeats, this time with slightly more conviction. "I promise not to let you down!" [break][break] John Sullivan

"That's the spirit!" He said before swinging both arms skyward, his net balls flying high in the air before releasing a Gliscor and a Parasect into the field. "And I know you won't! Let this battle begin!"

The look in her eye was a good one; she might grow yet in the battle to come. Sweeping his arm dramatically, the youth nodded at Luka.

"My gym challengers get the first move, missy!" He said.

Acknowledging that this is a gym battle almost makes her freeze again. It's definitely not the kind of fight she'd anticipated when joining the tournament- in fact, she'd figured she'd be months into her journey before ever facing a gym leader. Her fingers tremble slightly as they fist into her skirt, but it's too late to back down now. [break][break] "T-that's very kind of you," she says, unable to keep the nerves out of her voice. Luka takes a deep breath as she tries to think of a strategy, putting all of her limited experience to use. "O-okay! Sugar, let's give Plum a helping hand!" Her Eevee immediately springs up, tapping a paw against Musharna's side. The dreamy Pokemon is her best fighter, so boosting her up is probably a good way to start! "And Plum...let's start things off with Moonblast!" A beam of light bursts from her Musharna, aimed towards Doug's Gliscor.[break][break] John Sullivan

Helping hand into Moonblast? That was pretty good!

"No need to sound so shy, Missy! That's a pretty good combo!" He said as he swept his arm, "Sidon, block it! Bio, give 'em the cocktail!"

The Gliscor moved to stand in the way of the blast, crossing his arms in front of himself and gritting his teeth as the beam washed over him, doing his best to stand his ground while his partner prepared her spores.

After a moment, Biollante reeled back before throwing a powdery concoction the enemy's way, the ball exploding into a cloud of spores as it landed!

Sidon tanked the hit for Bio!
Bio used Spore (sleep) and Poison Powder!

These spores do not look good. Luka can't tell exactly what kind of attack this is, but she has a feeling she doesn't want her Pokemon hit by it! But what can she do? They're airborne, almost impossible to avoid at this rate. Think, think...she remembers her fight against jayden cross and how creative some of his tactics had been. Maybe she can try something like that?[break][break] "Sugar! Use sand attack, see if you can blow those away!" Her Eevee doesn't particularly care for this move- she hates getting her paws dirty. But as instructed she blasts up a wave of sand towards the spore ball in the hopes that it might make the cloud dissipate. The sand mixes with the spores, and some of it does seem to float away harmlessly, but it's just not enough. However, it seems to at least prevent her Pokemon from being inflicted with both status ailments at once! Sugar, at the front of it, slumps down as sleep overtakes her, while Plum winces from the poison. However...her opponents are going to get a taste of their own medicine, since Plum's ability is synchronize! [break][break] "Oh goodness...are you okay, Plum?" Luka calls out, squinting to try and make out the forms of her Pokemon through the sand. "Protect...um, protect Sugar while she's sleeping!" As instructed, Plum hovers over her snoozing teammate, bracing for whatever might come next. [break][break] John Sullivan [break] ✓ sustain a poison!

"That was a good idea! Just need to instill a lil' more urgency on yer pokemon next time!" Doug praised the girl, wincing as Biollante flinched and suddenly slumped, looking tired and sick.

"What...? Oh! Synchronize! Right!" It had been a long time since he had fought a Musharna... He had been rather careless! Fortunately, Sidon didn't seem particularly affected, as he was a poison type.

"Gonna have to save 'em for last, at this rate!" He said, "Sidon- Freeze over the Eevee! Bio, rage powder!"

Simple trick; he would divide them by forcing the Musharna to attack Biollante, while Sidon went to deal with the sleeping Eevee!

Bio used Rage Powder on Musharna!
Sidon used Ice Fang (Frozen and Flinch) on Eevee!

Had she caught him off guard? It's only for a moment, and it's not like that was Luka's aim at all. But it makes her feel a little better- that even a gym leader might have a moment of forgetfulness. There's so much to remember- movesets, abilities, typings...Luka can't keep it all straight even on the best of days and though she's sure she'll remember more the longer she trains, it's nice to know that even accomplished trainers are still learning. [break][break] But she doesn't have time to be thinking about that! Luka refocuses and winces at the same time- Doug's tactics to divide and conquer go off without a hitch. Luka doesn't have any idea what a rage powder is...she half expects Plum to go berserk when it hits. But instead, her Musharna just seems laser-focused on the Parasect in front of them, no longer able to protect the sleeping Eevee below her. [break][break] "Ah, oh no, um..." Luka flounders for a moment, suddenly remembering how many eyes are on her. She blanches. "Plum, use...u-use Psychic!" It's the best she can think of in the moment. In the meantime, she's helpless to do anything to help Sugar, who's now been attacked, rendered asleep, and frozen! The poor dear has been through enough... [break][break] "Sugar, come back! You did wonderfully," she says, recalling the Pokemon with a gentle smile. She smooches the top of her Eevee's love ball before grabbing another, sending out her shiny Buneary next. [break][break] John Sullivan [break] ✓ sustain a freeze!

The psychic blast works well, blasting back Biollante back to unconsciousness, drawing a flinch out of the gym leader before he quickly returns her to her net ball.

"Good job, love." He muttered a the net ball, before turning his attention back to Luka, a broad grin on his lips as he palms another net ball. "And good job, challenger! Yer doing great! Having fun?"

He reeled back before before throwing out his own pokeball, releasing his Illumise onto the field. The sassy pokemon looked around with a cheeky grin before winking at Luka, and then putting her game face on.

She immediately reached over and grabbed an unsuspecting Sidon by the tail, spinning him around, much to his panicked screaming, before launching him at the Musharna flying with him scream.

Electricity covered his maw as he attempted to turn the maneuver into something he could use, trying to bite down!

Akua the Illumise used helping hand!
Sidon used thunder Fang (Paralysis and Flinch) on Musharna!

Is she having fun? That's a hard question- Luka's nerves are alight and adrenaline pumps through her veins, but is it fun? It's exhilarating and overwhelming, nerve-wracking and thrilling all at once. It's hard for her to parse her feelings, since this is all so new. Especially a battle like this, spectated and hyped up, with people cheering on all sides. [break][break] But Luka doesn't hate it. She knows that much. A hesitant smile slips onto her face, like the sun coming up on a cloudy day, and she nods. [break][break] But in the meantime, she has to focus! Plum, already poisoned and a little sluggish, takes the full brunt of the thunder fang. Electricity crackles around her and she flinches, unable to move- though her synchronize takes affect once again. Luka readies her Buneary for an attack next, aiming to take on the offensive Gliscor with a double kick! [break][break]The battle goes on. It's a thorough lesson in battling and status ailments from the gym leader, that's for sure. Luka seems to pick up a few tricks here and there, but eventually her team starts to go down, one after the other. Eventually she's left with only her baby Togepi and the newest member of her team, a Clefable. [break][break] "Oh gosh...y-you've really driven us into a corner!" Luka laughs nervously, once again feeling the eyes of the crowd upon her. Might as well go out with a bang, and try to provide some entertainment. "B-battling is mostly about strategy, right? But in a situation like this, I'll um, hope for a little luck! Both of you, use metronome!" It's a gamble. Luka squeezes her eyes shut and hopes for the best. Her Togepi coos and giggles as a sudden barrage of rocks fall from the sky, while Clefable thoroughly surprises her by summoning a wave of water that washes across the entire field! [break][break] John Sullivan [break]Togepi uses rock tomb! [break] Clefable uses surf! [break] ✓ sustain paralysis!

The battle had gone for longer than even Doug had thought it would, and the girl had certainly shown her talent throughout it all. Improving by leaps and bounds over the course of a single battle was pretty impressive!

"It's m'job, missy!" He said with a grin, tugging at his vinnie while his very exhausted Illumise and her partner, a much fresher Volbeat flanked him. "Right on ya are- strategy is often most important... but they say luck is also a skill! Just don't rely too often on it!"

Rocks fall from the sky and powerful waves surge forth with the metronome duo!

"Helping hand and Zen Headbutt!" Ordered the youth as the rocks fell. A sacrificial move that the Illumise was all to willing to take, she suddenly snatched her partners hand before she began to spin wildly, before throwing him forth to the Clefable like a bullet.

Rocks fell upon her before she was washed away by the waves, her trainer returning her to her pokeball before it got too bad- while the Volbeat soared at highspeed just barely over the water, his noggin' making a beeline for the Clefable!

Akua the Illumise used helping hand!
Volbeat used Zen Headbutt!

Honestly, Luka is really astounded she'd gotten this far. She really has everyone she'd battled to thank...they'd never asked to be teachers, and she'd never impose such a title on them, but each still taught her a valuable lesson. For a novice like her, every loss is just a step towards an eventual victory, even though such a thing seems a long, long way off. [break][break] Though their metronomes are successful, it's not enough to pull the tides of battle in their favor. Even though the attack is already aimed towards Clefable, she makes sure to step in front of Toffee and shield the baby from any harm. But that's all she can do- weakened from battling previously, the powerful attack is enough to knock Cupcake out and Luka quickly recalls her. Just like she has with her other downed teammates, Luka whispers a few quick words of praise to the love ball, gives it a smooch, and retires it. [break][break] With this, the battle is all but decided. Though Togepi babbles and coos happily, Luka knows he won't be able to withstand more than one attack. Though disappointed (but not surprised), Luka finds that she's not too upset...she's done her best, and she can finish this with her head held high. "Another metronome...let's see what happens!" This time, Togepi is simply surrounded by a gentle green light, a synthesis that only prolongs the inevitable. [break][break] John Sullivan [break] Togepi uses synthesis!
