Ever so slightly, an eyebrow is raised, but Mars knows this is his own fault and that he deserves these words – joke or not.

He could have said something much sooner. He could have said something at any moment when they had spent last night together, but he had made the conscious effort not to do so. Why? The answer to that is difficult, but perhaps it’s because this day isn’t filled with the same joy it once was; because he no longer feels as if it deserves to be celebrated, and because it comes with memories that are now all too painful.

Perhaps, these are also part of the reasons why he had wanted to spend the night with Cian, and why he had told him it would be okay to stay at the penthouse instead of leaving as he usually would have. Because he likes being with Cian. Because it makes him happy. Because he didn’t want to be alone on that one night...

He’s selfish, and he knows as much.

Still, Mars holds his gaze, even though he sighs.

”It’s my birthday, Cian.”

For a man who never apologizes, today Mars seems to be full of apologies.

Still, just as before, Cian pays this little mind, and instead he smiles.

’I didn't get you a gift.’

He chuckles, shaking his head. ”Nah, don’t worry about it, all this is more than enough.” Coming from someone else these words may have been a polite lie, but from Mars? When Mars says them they’re as true as it gets.

He’s a man that could have most things in the world, and as such he has learned there are things that are of far more value than anything Cian could buy and put in a pretty bow. This morning is full of valuable things; there’s waking up next to Cian, there’s the way he comforted him, his willingness to listen, and also watching do something he truly adores. All these are things Mars will cherish, even if he may never say as much – even if he's yet to realize why he cherishes them so much.

”Don’t let that go to your head though.” A teasing smirk and he reaches up, his hand resting on Cian’s.

He holds his gaze.
[break][break]
”Going out sounds good.”

Mars cares little for celebrating his birthday, but maybe this one time there is an exception to that.

Mars is good at lying, and he’s even better at lying to himself, but he’s no fool, and as he looks at Cian, he knows there’s something that lingers between them. Things that are unsaid.

Exactly what, he’s not sure, but without intending to, as if a trick of his subconscious, he finds himself thinking back to the tournament and what Cian had said then. What had most definitely been a joke, and what Mars has no reason to still be thinking of…

Too bad that this is not the first time he finds himself thinking back to those words.

”I’ll look forward to it.” The smirk remains, his thoughts forever hidden.

What exactly will they do? That doesn’t matter at this very moment, not when he suddenly finds himself distracted by more obvious and immediate offers.

”A shower, huh? We can do that.”

Of course they can.

And, just like that, in a manner that could easily be no more than a gesture made by a close friend but could also mean so much more, he wraps an arm around Cian’s shoulders, grinning. “Come on, let’s head back.”

He’s sweaty and tired, and he doesn’t care much about any of that right now.

And the nightmares? There’s gone from his thoughts.
