Her hand crept towards his again. “Yeah? Well, I’m glad you decided to stay.”

Time to put up a small chase—small enough to be a bluff anyone would call at this point.

The bartender would return with two stemmed cocktail gasses, full of candy hot pink and two pretty twists of lemon skin. It was sweet. It wasn’t her favorite, and by the look of what he’d had in his hand before, maybe it wouldn’t be his either.

She took a bet that maybe he had a sense of humor.

This time, when their hands met, the way her finger ran along his was obvious. Gentle still, but slow, and more deliberate. She coordinated it with something suggestive in her eyes, cast over the top of her drink as she took a sip.

“No?” She set her glass back down, laughing a little, and flashing another smile through the sugar on her tongue. “Why's that?”

“Oh, it’s still strong,” she assured. “You just can't taste it as much.”

Her body turned towards him more in the stool, the open toe of her heeled foot lightly brushing his leg as her arm pressed against the side of the bar.

He was already making assumptions about her. That was a pretty good sign.

Her eyes hung on him a moment in an appreciative way she was 110% confident looked genuine.

“Good.”

It was a great sign.

He looked sort of cute holding his drink—another thing she noted briefly and then tossed out the proverbial window. Don’t need that.

“Yep. Lived in Lilycove my whole life.” The accent matched. Unova who? “What about you, Lance?”

She maneuvered to take another sip of her drink, hand leaving him briefly again.

Luckily, Nina liked Lilycove, and knew at least a decent amount about where things were. Still, she was no expert. No worries, as she was, however, an expert in bullshit.

Her confidence didn’t waver outwardly. “Okay. Sure, I’d love to.”

To keep contact as she held her glass, her knee brushed against his. “Busy man, then. What do you do?”

It would hopefully be enough conversation not to down their drinks and leave immediately. Something else to think about and latch onto later—besides the obvious.

“That sounds so dangerous and action-packed. I bet you have a lot of interesting stories.”

Her knee shifted to the outside to let his brush on her inner thigh a moment.

“I do some housekeeping. Babysit sometimes. I love kids.” She reached for her drink again, giving a light sigh, almost as though she was disappointed about the next part. “None of my own, though. Not yet.”

he thinks of what could've been.

in the end, all he can do is feign a smile, a facade, and drown the rest with another sip.

Kids were great, he said. That was sad, and she knew why.

He finished his drink before her. Was he in a hurry? His eyes said yes, as they led to the exit—and some other things, maybe, that she didn’t care enough to wonder about. Couldn’t care.

She simply adjusted her tempo to fit.

“Depends.” Her hand reached to pick up to her glass again and she leaned in, hair falling to the as if to make the moment all the more intimate. “Do you want to take me home, yet?”
