Diced Combusken sizzled as it hit the bottom of a cast iron pot, propped and heated over burning coals. A spatula moved it around to even out before a heavy lid was set on top by its steel handle. The smell of butter, pepper and thyme began to waft.

She took a step back and sipped a hoppy beer, looking towards King. “Combusken Pot Pie coming up.” A smile was given before she paced a few steps, briefly eyeing the ground, straight into a pleasant memory between blades of grass.

“Back when I was still in foster care, after Matias went to live with the Silphs, was when I learned how to cook. Then a rich kid named Sénon Game taught me some things when we were like, sixteen.” She wondered what he was up to these days. “He went off to culinary school right about the time I enlisted. Probably some fancy chef, now.”

king sits in one of those fold out chairs,, leaning into back into it as he sips a beer. he smiles, as she announces the meal, and he can't help but gulp as he takes in the intoxicating scent of the upcoming meal.

the compliment gets buried under her tale, and he listens almost as eagerly as he craves her meal.

"if it's as good as it tastes, i'll have to thank 'em. i'm really lookin' forward to this."

“Just Combusken for now. Needs to cook a little first.”

She smiled. Compliments on food gave her more warmth than others kinds. While the military had seemed, perhaps ironically, like the safest decision when thrust out on her own with no family, it was feeding people that gave her real joy. She had lacked the confidence to explore it further.

But this was fine. This was how things had happened, and she didn’t regret anything. She was happy to be here with MATIAS SILPH and others, and even KING WAYLAND , that night. They were her family.

She went to sit in another chair next to him, watching the sun touch the horizon.

“Maybe he’ll pop up one day.”

It would have been nice to see him again, but they’d also had their time. It had been beautiful, and the memories were perfect left closed where they were.

She sipped.

“Well, I learned the basics at the foster home I lived in as a kid. It was kind of essential. They were spread pretty thin, usually.” Especially when she’d kept outgrowing everyone. They’d all leave—even Matias eventually—and she’d still always been there, learning how to feed new faces. By the time she’d been old enough, she’d practically been raising the rest of the foster children herself.

“But I wouldn’t say I learned how to cook well there. Sénon taught me about herbs and spices, and all of the fun stuff.” She smiled and gave a small laugh. “I didn’t even know what good food tasted like, before.”

it wasn't the greatest, nor, perhaps even the worst. they'd grown up without their parents, while king spent everyday of his childhood wishing he had never met his. it was a strange world, this.

he laughs lightly, at her small joke. here he was, a grown ass man, and he still couldn't really tell you what good food tasted like. he'd never really learned to cook; didn't see the need. couldn't place all of that blame on his mother.

"i feel like that i won't know what good food tasted like 'fore this, either. just a guess though."

another sip of the beer, and his eyes turn back onto the horizon.

Had they had it rough? MATIAS SILPH had gotten out, and apparently learned about other things. For Sagira, it hadn’t ever really occurred to her. It had just been how things always were.

“I guess.” She shrugged. “They did the best they could. I feel like I turned out okay—maybe.”

A smile.

She was surprised to hear, again, about what seemed to her a major life experience everyone his age should’ve had by now.

“Seriously?”

Sagira liked camping a lot, and would go often on her own. She enjoyed the peace and quiet, and the immersion into nature. It was rejuvenating.

“Well.” She tipped her beer to her lips. “Now you have.”

Sagira smirked at her friend’s expense. “Must’ve been the Silphs.” Money didn’t equate to sense, after all.

The smell of firewood, as though he hadn’t smelled it before. She looked over at him, hesitating as she brought the beer to her lips again. It was hard to believe he was this… what was it, even?

“You thought I wouldn’t be good at camping?”

Sage had never been jealous, or resentful of anything except for maybe the fact that MATIAS SILPH had been taken from her. Of course, now that they were older, there were no hard feelings left. She’d still laugh about it.

He didn’t know many people who went camping? That seemed somehow odd but she didn’t question it.

[break]while not much of a homebody - he needed his fill of social outings, and liquor, and they just so happened to mix convienantly at a pub - he wasn't exactly seeking the thrill of the great outdoors often.

he contemplates what to say in response, but finds her words to hold a modicum of truth. it was peaceful. but where peace lingered, so too did the thoughts that hid in it's shadow. quiet made the voice in his head clearer, and that in turn led to very bad things in the charge of quieting it.

his lips turn upwards into a devilish grin, eager to turn the somber (he thought) subject to something more his speed. from his pack, he takes out a bottle of the good stuff. hard, brown, and all too bitter.

She didn’t hold on to the same negativity. The quiet was quiet all the way through. Somehow, she could allow the breeze to extract the bad from her very spirit and carry it away, over the hills.

If only that ability would last.

“It’s what you make of it, I guess.”

She looked down when he brought out a bottle. She didn’t drink much, but she knew that liquor was best consumed, not in a pub, but outdoors, around campfire.

“You’re trouble.”

She smiled.

[break]admittedly, part of his attraction to the woman was the peace she exuded; a peace denied from him, no matter how often he sought for it. it made her a beacon, and a calming presence, amidst the hurricane of emotions he usually tempered.

Taking the cup then, she snorted, blunt. “That’s a bad toast.”

Her cup was then raised briefly.

“To us.”

She brought it to her lips, and the taste was bitter and not entirely welcome, but it complimented the fire at her toes like a good recipe.
