her attention still hung on her shame, even as she beheld the great beauty of the sky and nature. she might as well dig a hole and lie in it.

the distraction was very welcome, and she turned with eagerness to leave the moment behind them. at the sight of brownies, she grinned, the corners of her mouth hitched up by creeping intoxication.

she took the container and promptly held it up to her nose, taking a whiff and eyeing him as though a judgment was already being formed. she looked them over, plucking out one that looked particularly substantial. then, she took a second, and handed them back to him.

”smells like this should be enough,” she said, before taking a large bite.

she took a bite as well, humming. ”pretty good,” she agreed after swallowing it down. ”didn’t know you were a baker.” a pause. ”or a stoner.”

sage wasn’t exactly obvious on the surface, herself—too collected and alert, but it made sense.

"just a matter of followin' directions, idn't it?" it wasn't like baking was a difficult thing to do, nor emasculating. a man that knew how to cook was a man worthy to be sought after. now, he wasn't the best at it, of course, but still. he was honestly not sure he'd ever be able to flip an egg well enough.

the thought of him partaking in such an activity to ’clear his mind’ made her smile. she had seen him more in action, rather than at ease. there were drinks, of course, with MATIAS SILPH , but those nights were livelier than what they might experience together now, just the two of them.

”same, i think. i feel like i slow down and think about things more.” another sip, which oddly didn’t taste terrible with the herbal taste of brownie. ”plus it’s relaxing.”

it was true. matias had a tendency to pick on king—but king could take it, or seemed to. it was all in good fun, and king was just as good as dealing shit back.

she smiled, ”yeah, okay. your secret’s safe with me.”

being able to clear the mind, to exist and not dive into thoughts, to become free of the negativity that always accompanied so many of them… it was a blessing, especially for them, who had seen so much.

”really?” she glanced down at her own. ”guess i haven’t tried it much either. not much of a drinker, to be honest.”

she’d go out for beers with them, but she’d always been a light sipper. she preferred to have her wits about her.

he hesitated. was he lying? she smiled wider. ”it’s okay if you are.”

she wasn’t quite feeling it yet, but maybe it was creeping. maybe it was a difference in metabolism. who knew?

”nah, not yet.” but her smile pinched even higher before she hid it behind the mouth of the beer bottle, downing the last of it. maybe she was feeling that a little. a warmth in her chest.

she set the bottle down and sat further back in her chair. the sun was nearly down now. dark began to settle in. after a long moment of quiet, she asked, ”is there more beer?”
