FERNANDO’S TEXT MESSAGES ARE AS CURT AS HE IS.

An animated emoji sits in her messages. It doesn’t quite explain why, nor answer her question, but it should stave off any apprehension that he’ll stand her up. Not that he would dare without good reason.

A woman like Katherine Fairburne is not one to be undermined or underappreciated.

Hence the prompt bellow his of Salamence as he cuts through the skyline. Wrinkled sleeve tense as Fernando digs his fingers into the dragon’s scales. He holds on for dear life but without much of an expression, his worry is easily mistaken for his notable monotone neutral.

And why would she? What kind of response even was that? The animated emoji earns an honest eye-roll before she fishes for a capsule and releases a pokemon from the first Pokeball she could reach for.

It happened to be Pheromosa, a pokemon FERNANDO SILPH hasn’t yet seen with Katherine. How fun. If only he was here to watch her in action, huh? Instead, the Ultra Beast puts on a show for absolutely no one except for her owner. Her SPEED is swapped with that of the Kirlia before a feint attack is executed, putting the psychic type to sleep.

THE DAMNED BEAST KNOWS NO BOUNDS. The way it descends with its ZEN HEADBUTT is more reminiscent of a meteor than any type of flying mount. A PROTECTIVE barrier is casted moments before impact but the inertia leaves him both nauseous and resentful.

So much for well behaved. He almost has the mind to reprimand freya morningstar via text on the spot but foregoes it when he lands in a pool of sand. The remnants of a collapsed Palossand sink his every step, displaced by the Pokemon’s harsh landing.

A spare Pokeball serves as a vacuum, cleaning up his landing spot and securing his footing. When it bounces back into his hand, he pockets it, turning to stare at Katherine from a few meters out.

“Fairburne,” he greets in monotone, unfazed as the Salamence cranes its neck over his shoulder.

Both the beast and Freya's Salamence make one hell of a show out of their landing. Naturally, Katherine's attention is drawn to the familiar Silph, but her Pheromosa appears more reluctant to grace the councilman with a glance.

Instead, she batters an emerging Misdreavus with her feet, committing a foul play. A Pokeball is thrown in the direction of the ghost-type at some point.

”Fernando,” she can't help it, a smile stretches her lips thin as her dark eyes move to rest upon him. ”Aren't you just a sight for sore eyes? I missed you,” enough time's passed since their last meeting for her to show some uncanny affection. It might cause the man to consider if there's some ulterior motive that she'd been hiding, but having such suspicion arise in him doesn't seem to phase her.

THE THRILL OF THE HUNT REEKS FROM THE DRAGON’S MAW. With a brush of his hand, he dismisses the dragon to do as it likes. A pointed glare it thrown toward the Ultra Beast but watching it make short work out of the Misdreavus deters the dragon from lashing out.

Instead, it looks to divert their challenge elsewhere. A mumbled snarl is its only warning before it takes off, preying on a roosting Swoobat. Leathery wings are punctured as the greater dragon delivers a bone crushing CRUNCH. Like kyle lopez’s dogs, the Pokemon seems proud to bring back its new chewtoy.

Disgust fills the crinkles of his frown. He disappears the sight with an empty Pokeball, pocketing it as his attention turns. That same distaste seems to evolve when his eyes trace the outline of her figure, glowering more toward disapproval rather than outright loathing.

“I could say the same, Fairburne,” a stark reminder of his more recent company twists that same frown into an ill fitted smirk.

“I heard you’ve been busy—what with the prestigious and respectable position you hold, Miss League representative.”

Despite being the furthest thing from a canine, Pheromosa still takes orders as well as kyle lopez’s dogs do. Katherine doesn’t have to point at the resting Musharna for the Ultra Beast to assault them with a series of brutal kicks. One after one, the alien creature cements its status as the superior pokemon.

It’s stronger, faster, and so much more brutal.

Nevertheless, seeing him here, now, still manages to put her mind at ease. He most certainly was alive and it appeared that he’d been staying far away from glass workshops. Good. Beyond the role Fernando served for the League, he served a much bigger purpose in Katherine’s future plans in Hoenn - and as much as she would love to find out whether if Tapu Fini could revive Fernando should he die…

SALAMENCE HUFFS. To think that a mere insect could be quicker and cleaner makes the dragon nauseous. More so than how it had left Fernando, quick to forget about its trainer as it undertakes freya morningstar’s principles. It is more than just a Pokemon.

It’s a predator.

Flames cut through what little grass sprouts between damp pockets of crag and crust. They burn through the Hypno’s mane, unrelenting, as the dragon hoses down its opponent in a haze of smoke and fire. The intensity goes beyond what is measured, crackling as a warning for its competitor.

“Ah,” his eyes narrow as they trace over familiar words and a loading screen he knows all too well.

“I has it as well. Picked it up from the cafe we worked at.”

He doesn’t bother withdrawing his phone. Showcasing what she’s already seen is both an insult to his time and her intelligence. More importantly, he’s more fixated on what hers has and if there’s any distinct different.

“Do you remember the text I sent you about the anti-Avatar group? It’s the same logo.” He clicks his tongue. “I saw them again on Mount Chimney.”

But that doesn’t explain the device.

“It’s like a Pokedex but for Unown. I’ve registered two and it reveals words associated with it. The concurrent theme seems to be scientific terms. Mostly those that relate to space.”

The sound of his Salamences FLAMETHROWER proves distracting. With an equally annoyed glare, he looks to silence it by throwing a Pokeball at the distraction.

who is to say that this ‘unown pokedex’ wasn’t just the work of a person with way too much time on their hands? who’s to say unowns had that much meaning in general? then again, why go to such lengths if it isn’t real?

“if it belongs to them, then we definitely didn’t find it by chance.” fernando must have reached the same conclusion already. “But why would an anti-avatar group give away information for free?” She wouldn’t. Fernando wouldn’t. So that must mean that there is a price or an ulterior motive, they are just not aware of it just yet.

The honedge is assaulted by FEINT, foul attacks that pheromosa carries out mercilessly. She expects a pokeball to be thrown when the pokemon faints, gazing towards her owner with a dismissive expression. Almost as though she was entirely bored by the ongoing conversation and waited for the next challenger to arrive.

eventually, a pokeball is indeed tossed at the fallen ghost.

“THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT WE’RE DOING.”

He shoots a look at the Pheromosa. It’s his first time seeing one up close in person. While it’s proven adequate so far, it’s speed is what prove amazing to him. Limber legs that look like they would shatter under weight seem to deliver punishing blows.

“But they’ve distributed enough of them that it’s impossible to stop its completion.” A fact that’s becoming abundantly clear as new entries pop up with each passing day. He’s only contributed twice but the collective majority has seemingly completed the alphabet.

“I’ve made a small contribution to keep tabs on it. I would suggest you do the same, if you can, just to be involved.”

The same cannot be said for the wild Pokemon around them. Anything that enters their newfound territory is subjected to the constant competition between a Salemence with a fragile ego and a bedazzling Ultra Beast. Not one to be usurped, the dragon ZEN HEADBUTTS the largest Pokemon in view. This just so happens to be a Grumpig.

“I assume your old employer is doing the same? Keeping tabs on our illustrious heroine?”

His Pokeball pops with his question, suggestive with a tease that comes a question that’s been asked too many times to count.
