Okay, so this trip to the Lavaridge Hot Springs was definitely clandestine and sneakily planned.

Well, it was at the suggestion of his PT Rory Faust to just go there, sit in the hot springs water, and do absolutely nothing. Just—sitting there and letting the warm water do its work.

Well, technically he’d been here a couple of times before however instead of relaxing, things had gotten more than a little heated with a certain blockhead bluenette (cough @mattis cough) and the two idiots had ended up doing exceptionally spicy things that were… well, yeah.

Leaving at that, this time he’d been helped towards one of the quieter hot springs while on the wheelchair (where the fuck was the jet pack he’d ordered, what was taking so long for it to arrive) before he’d managed to hobble off and shower down.

This time though, he wasn’t alone.

He’d snuck along a little troublemaker as a companion.

The Phione, completely alien to the notion of hot water, was giggling like an idiot as she spotted the set-up and immediately dived in without further ado.

“Geez, Zelle, you could’ve waited for me,” he grumbled as he hobbled out and sat himself down on the edge of the hot springs, letting his legs stretch out in the water.

Okay, the sitting part was done.

Now what?

what is unexpected, however, besides the virizion who trails after him, is that he's not alone.

The sound of another human voice makes the madly-giggling Phione suddenly stick her head up from the warm water, and without so much as a warning or a preamble, literally floats over to the stranger, flailing her thumbless limbs and attempting to attach herself to this human’s face in greeting.

On his part, he only saw the blur as it literally zoomed by and he turned around to follow, already saying, “No, Zelle, that’s not Ma—stop!” his voice going up in pitch as the Phione made a friendly kind of noise, the Water-type’s forehead pressed to the stranger’s.

And then he recognizes his companion.

“Oh, hello Matias,” he said as he wiggled his toes underwater, however his face was still frozen in a look of horror at his misbehaving culprit of a Pokémon.

using it as an opportunity to slip away, matias approaches the water.

Okay, so the Phione had absolutely no regard for personal space whatsoever—

However it’s the accompanying Pokémon that’s with Matias that draws his attention. The look of horror frozen on his face is replaced with one of absolute shock—

What the fuck?

Over where the Phione was, she giggled and floated (more like flew, but that’s not the point here) towards the green Pokémon and made the same happy noise and pressed her own forehead in greeting.

“That—is—wha—” he managed to gurgle out, staring open-mouthed at one of the three (four?) Swords. Another fable from home, in the fucking flesh.

Right here, so close.

“I—I know,” were the first words he managed to stammer, watching the Magical Leaf display.

He knew of their fable as three who roamed the wilds of Unova, defenders of Pokémon in a time long ago. How they met the fourth were details that eluded him, however.

There were more tales that spoke of a fourth, a younger one—

“How did h—s—they end up here. They’re so far away from home.”

The Phione was having the time of her life, though, and in return the little squidgy thing poking out from the top of her head lit up in a soft, gentle Tail Glow.

At the mention of Kyle, though, his eyebrows met.

“Wa—wait a second,” he remarked, suddenly remembering something. “I know he’s got weird-ass… I know he’s an avatar already, but of what exactly I can’t be too sure. How—how can a second legendary be following him around?”

Now he had to try and meet with Melody Miro because holy shit, she was very possibly pandering around with one of the other three!

“Do you—know their story? Of the Swords, I mean.”

Mad giggling erupted from the corner where the Phione was now floating around the Virizion, the squishy appendage alight and slowly attracting—the world’s equivalent of fireflies.

Okay that was a bit out of the realm of his understanding, he’d have to get back to that later.

“Well then,” he began as he looked over where the two Pokémon were entertaining themselves.

“There are variants of the mythos, but the one most of everyone knows back home in Unova is that the three—well, technically they said there are four of them, but the Three Swords came together to repel human forces due to the expansion of modernity and the destruction of the land.”

Shit, he hoped he got this right!

“One of the reasons why they came out to defend all the helpless Pokémon was because of a war, way back then, somewhere around Icirrus. There was, supposedly, a huge fire in the forest around the area.”

He wondered if the Virizion was going to headbutt him for getting the details wrong. Ah well.

With the Phione giggling madly at the little swarm of dots that were now gathering around where they were, the Tail Glow emanating from the squishy appendage sticking out of her head only served to intensify as she chased after the leaves the other Pokémon was producing for their entertainment.

Back to where the two humans were…

“Okay, so, the fire. Both sides that were in the middle of the battle blame each other because nobody really knows who started it, but—here’s where it gets interesting. Terrakion, the one with Kyle right now, can earth bend—supposedly. Made high walls of dirt and stone to keep the thick smoke away. Yours, them over there,” he dropped off, looking at the Virizion with something close to reverence, “...is known as the fastest of the three. Ran tirelessly through the burning forest to help the trapped Pokémon out to safety.”

No headbutting or negative reactions so far? Well, at least the variant he knew was right so far.

“The one with Melody, Cobalion, is their leader, and guided as many Pokémon trapped in the burning forest to safety. Thing is, the entire thing still burned to the ground, and left all of the Pokémon they saved homeless.”

He had to stop for a while to gather his wits.

“It’s a miracle they haven’t headbutted you or done anything against you yet—the Three are known for their distrust of people. Especially those who harm nature.”

he is by no means a ranger but he has a deep appreciation for the wilderness and all it has to offer. it's to be expected from someone who spent years living in it.

"i don't think any of us three have been chosen yet. they're still watching us, judging, and only when we prove ourselves will they fully accept us."

There’s a tiny hint of envy in his voice.

“Speaking of which, the Swords also have—like, a Kalosian classic written under the guise of their characters turned human. If I remember right, Virizion was represented by…” he trailed off, pondering. Why did he get those mixed up?!

“I think it was Aramis. So I’m kind of surprised you got the vain one.”
