THE BRIEFING[break][break]

every now and then, slateport pays volunteers to clean up the beach. pick up trash and help out any stray pokémon that’s washed ashore. occasionally, a mod may interrupt, OR you may tag a mod to provide your thread with a guaranteed moderated conflict.[break][break]

It's been a week since Stormy arrived in Hoenn. Alexander Stone's aid in transporting her safely to his home region had been successful, but worry continued to leave a dark imprint on her heart.[break][break]

The young woman had thrown herself into helping the civilians of Hoenn wherever possible. Not only did it take her mind off of the tragedy she had just survived, but it allowed her a chance to experience and explore the region.[break][break]

It's ten past nine in the morning. She can feel the sun bearing down on her shoulders with an intense heat. Sand slips between her toes as it breaks the barrier between her sandals and her skin. She doesn't mind.[break][break]

Stormy had been tasked, or rather, had tasked herself with picking up trash. The cool breeze coming in off of the ocean was comforting, even though she didn't particularly like the water. For some reason, looking out over the waves reminded her of home.[break][break]

For the better part of the morning, she had been dutifully retrieving debris from the shore. Sometimes she would even wade out into the water, but only so far that the waves came to her knees. Any farther and her heart would start to panic.[break][break]

Not far away, a Torkoal rested in the sand. She had dug herself a little cozy nest on the beach, embracing the heat of the sun.[break][break]

with resources spread out across the region, it doesn't take him long to find what he wants. unfortunately, his resources weren't available in kanto and his business partners were in no position to help, which is why his search for FERNANDO SILPH dragged on for a week.

fortunately, alexander is safe back in hoenn.

it's rare to see the devon heir don anything other than his work clothes but today he has to; a suit and tie isn't appropriate for the beach, which is where he finds himself on this sunny morning.

warm sand sinks with every step he takes as he shifts across the beach, soon finding himself not too far away from stormy. with a convenient backpack swaying behind his back, he approaches her.

"enjoying hoenn, miss silph?"

Stormy has just bent down to pick up an empty can of pop to stash away in her bag of recycling when she hears a familiar voice.[break][break]

The woman immediately freezes, thinking hard on who the voice might belong to, but it doesn't take her long. No one else has ever really called her 'Miss Silph' aside from Alexander Stone.[break][break]

Relief washes over her like a cool splash of water, and she turns around abruptly to see her friend standing not too far away. She's immediately taken aback by his attire, however. Ever since she'd known him, she had only ever seen him in prim and proper formal attire.[break][break]

There's a moment where every part of her urges her to run up and embrace him. She doesn't however. Their relationship is not as close as she believes it to be and she doesn't want to embarrass herself.[break][break]

"Alex? Thank god you're safe."[break][break]

Her hand is shaking despite the firm grip she has on the can she still carries, and she begins to make her way to Alex.[break][break]

a natural urge of affection proposes the idea of a hug, an embrace, but he's stopped by a barrier of logic and reason. the shaking of her hand does not go unnoticed; despite that, he remains confident in his choice.

"i never break a promise," he says, tone lighthearted and fun because that is what the situation calls for. when kanto is nothing but darkness and despair, there needs to be a balance: hoenn will be that balance.

also noticing the bag of recycling, he gestures to it. "do you mind if i join you?" there's no real need to ask but he does it out of manners anyways.

and with that, the two start walking.

"how's hoenn treating you?"

She notices her own hand shaking, and she tucks the can behind her back as if to hide the fact that she's emotional.[break][break]

Stormy allows a gasp to leave her lips as she looks up at Alex. His statement allows a warm feeling to grow in the pit of her stomach. He hadn't broken his promise, he had come home.[break][break]

She smiles, the lightest hint of a blush tinting her cheeks pink.[break][break]

"I'm glad you're safe."[break][break]

Her gaze moves to the recycling bag she has sitting in the sand. It's slumped over now from the weight of the items inside. She'd almost forgotten what she had been doing before Alex arrived.[break][break]

"Sure, yeah.. if you want. I'm just picking up some garbage. It's sad, what people take for granted."[break][break]

There's a shadow of sadness that crosses her face, her normally cheery and bright expression clouded over with grief.[break][break]

The woman doesn't let it sit for long, however. Alex isn't here to wallow about the woes of garbage-picking. [break][break]

"Hoenn is.. very different from Kanto. But it hasn't been unkind. It's very easy to get lost here, though."[break][break]

"hoenn is vast but not empty; there's beauty hiding where you would least expect it. in that sense, i suppose it is different from kanto." but that's not to say there's no beauty in kanto, there's just very little of it left, which is what his words imply.

alexander bends down to pick up empty cans, bottles, whatever trash he passes as they walk down the beach. with the sun cascading down upon them, he slides his shades down off his head to help lessen the strain on his eyes. it's clear he's not fond of the heat.

"i take it you've settled in well? i hope the accommodation is up to your standards, miss silph." he speaks formally but his tone conveys jest and it becomes clear by the end of the sentence that he's poking fun at formalities.

today, he's not here on business.

As he speaks, she continues about her business. She continues to add recycling and trash to her bags, occasionally opening them whenever Alex retrieved something.[break][break]

Aside from their conversation, it was quiet. The sun was midway down the horizon, threatening to sink lower. Bird Pokemon screeched from time to time as they flew over the water, but there were no people on the beach tonight.[break][break]

"It is very beautiful here, but not as beautiful as Kanto was.."[break][break]

Meanwhile, while Alex puts his sunglasses to blot out the sun, Stormy is thriving in the heat. Her skin is glowing with perspiration, but it seems natural and probably beautiful.[break][break]

Stormy turns back to look at Alex as he continues to speak.. but it's his formal tone that makes her nervous. [break][break]

"You.. really don't have to keep calling me that. You can just call me Stormy if you want.. though I suppose that's a little odd because it's not my actual name."[break][break]

To be fair, it's mostly because Silph feels foreign to her, toxic. The Silph name is what got her parents killed, and it's why Fernando despises her.[break][break]

"If I'm being honest.. no. I've been quite lonely and unhappy. But I suppose that that is selfish of me. The accommodations are fine though, I'm just not sleeping well."[break][break]

"i'm sorry to hear that. i understand it must be difficult. and i'm also sorry that i couldn't be here to help more." what he wants to say but cannot is that he's sorry for her loss: her home, her parents, her family, gone. and there's nothing he can do to bring that back, no mater how hard he wishes he could.

but, today is not a day to feel down.

"what would you prefer?" he asks. "stormy or bronwen?" when they were younger, he'd call her by stormy. but as they grew older and subsequently business overtook personal relationships, he switched to miss silph.

picking up several empty cans, he places it into the recycling bag.

"Don't be sorry. This isn't your fault."[break][break]

She smiles, trying to put on a brave front. This isn't a time for sadness. Her hand moves to settle on his, to give it a reassuring squeeze. However, she freezes midway, unsure if it's appropriate. She eventually clears her throat and retracts her hand.[break][break]

Her eyes scan the beach for more debris. From the looks of it though, they've collected a large sum of the trash. All that remains are seaweed and washed up plants - and a couple of Wimpod. The creatures scuttle away the minute she takes a step toward them.[break][break]

"Stormy, if that's alright with you."[break][break]

The sun had started to sink in the sky. The water was slowly but surely turning into a lovely orange. Stormy hesitated, pressing her toes further into the sand. With a sigh, she stares out over the water at the sunset.[break][break]

"stormy it is."

soon, they reach one end of the beach. one glance back tells him that their job is done, for the most part, seeing as how there is nothing left on the beach but seashells, seaweed, and a group of wimpods. he smiles, not realizing how much time has passed; it flies when in good company.

alexander turns to look at her, and for once, he's unsure of what to do next. for a man who so carefully lays out his plans and is usually two steps ahead, stormy is an anomaly who makes him feel unprepared.

"i believe we are done." lifting up his own recycling bag, he ties it up and places it on the sand before gesturing for her to follow him. no words need to be said as he sits down on the sand, stretching his legs out as the sun starts to set.

The breeze is nice on her skin, a refreshing coolness that soothes her sun-warmed skin.[break][break]

She drags her heels in the sand as she walks, taking the time to fully appreciate the coarseness of it, and the beauty.[break][break]

Stormy is also satisfied and energized. She and Alex had single-handedly combed the beach of the worst of the garbage. Two heavy bags sat tied up tight further up the shore, away from the water. [break][break]

Her gaze catches Alex's gesture to follow him, and she blinks in surprise. There's an odd feeling of anxiety in her chest, but it wasn't unpleasant. For some reason, even though her and Alex had been only friends all those years ago, something had changed, at least for her.[break][break]

"A job well done, I think. The Wimpod seem happy to not have to be climbing over garbage. People can be so.. disrespectful."[break][break]

She mostly says this to curb the silence that had been settling between them. For the most part, they had been working diligently without really speaking to each other.[break][break]

Stormy hesitates as he sits down in the sand. His legs stretch out in front of him and she hesitates a little longer. Before long though she's sitting, but granting a foot or so of respectful distance between them.[break][break]

With a sigh of relief, she sinks her hands into the sand behind her, allowing the grains to slip between her fingers. Her focus is on the sun as it melts into the water. [break][break]

"It's been a long time since I've seen a sunset. It's beautiful."[break][break]

smiling, he agrees.

"it is."

there they sit as witnesses of hoenn's beauty. it's melancholic yet inspiring in some way; the sun will set at the end of the day and it will rise again. there's no changing that. perhaps there is something that can be learned from that. he slips his fingers into the sands for a moment before remembering what he originally came here to do.

"oh, i have a gift for you."

swinging his backpack around, he places it in front of him and slowly unzips, helping to build the tension. though his attention is on the backpack, he glances to stormy every now and then to gauge her expressions.

finally, he pulls out a castform plushie, the one he had retrieved from her room back in the silph estate in kanto. he can't help the smile that grows when he extends it over to her.

"i believe this is yours."

Stormy almost closes her eyes to really absorb the moment when Alex interrupts with word of a 'gift.'[break][break]

She sits up a little straighter, eyes wide with surprise and curiosity. He reaches around for his backpack and proceeds to open it slowly. She catches his eye once or twice as he seems to taunt her with how painstakingly slow he's going.[break][break]

Not once does she complain though, instead she seems to smile knowingly as if she's caught onto what he's trying to do.[break][break]

"A gift? I didn't know we were exchanging anything or else I would have--"[break][break]

Alex pulls out a worn but well-loved Castform plushie. Her heart seems to slow down as it thuds painfully loud in her ears. A lump in her throat grows as she covers her mouth with one hand, looking from the plushie to Alex's face.[break][break]

"Wh-where did you find this? I thought I lost it."[break][break]

She slowly reaches out to take it, her fingers automatically squeezing it, afraid she might let go and lose it again.[break][break]

Stormy brings it to her face, inhaling the familiar smell of home. There's a great deal of emotion in her eyes - regret and sadness.[break][break]

"Thank you, this is so kind."[break][break]

stormy's reaction is sweet. it makes him chuckle with a sense of glee he hasn't felt in a while. "silph estate in saffron. i stopped by when i was trying to find your brother." her very elusive brother, but he holds his tongue.

"you're welcome."

her expressions are noticed and almost immediately does he understand the great deal of emotions present in her eyes. she yearns for a home that's lost and while alexander does not know what that feels like, he can definitely empathize. he feels it, too.

"the estate is fine, just abandoned. rocket left it untouched, though i am not so sure why."

sighing, he recollects about his failed mission. his fingers dig deeper into the sand as he speaks.

"i couldn't find your brother, stormy. i'm sorry."

She must have left it by the bedside. Though... now that she thought about it, she had left it behind on purpose when she had originally left home in a rage. Stormy had been furious with her parents for losing interest in her and focusing all of their energy devotion to Fernando.[break][break]

Her own petty jealousy had cost her a precious thing. She had actually surprised herself by responding so positively to the plushie. Shame built up in her nerves, causing the back of her neck to grow hot.[break][break]

Because of her own selfishness and anger, she had decided to hate her own Castform, the Pokemon she had been so devoted to and thankful for. He had been her only real friend growing up. She could count on him for anything. When had she become so cruel?[break][break]

"This is an incredible gift."[break][break]

Stormy places the plushie in her lap, smiling sadly at it. She then returns her attention to Alex. The news he brings is not unwelcome, but it doesn't provide her much comfort.[break][break]

"I suppose that could be a blessing, that they haven't destroyed the estate."[break][break]

Her words fall awkwardly from her mouth as if she's unsure what exactly to say to that. Alex's hands digging deeper into the sand catches her eye. She finds herself glancing up from his hands to his face, trying to gauge what he's thinking.[break][break]

"You did your best. If Fernando doesn't wish to be found, he won't be. Perhaps that's why we couldn't find him the first time he disappeared."[break][break]

Stormy reaches a hand to grasp and squeeze Alex's hand, to try and relieve some of the pressure he seems to be under.[break][break]
