noibat (f) telepathy - dragon pulse, moonlight, hurricane, boomburst, dragon rush

it's a lovely gym.

he has a small odd-colored noibat sitting on his shoulder, understanding that the dragon-type might benefit from a trip to the sanctuary as well. but noibat's timid, shy, and remains on his shoulder even after he steps into the gym.

Oh, how he hated being chained to the ground.

Well, not literally chained, but… well, technically it was also a literal kind of chaining.

Sixty of the longest days of his fucking life. Banned from flying by his PT (and his boyfriend, too, I mean come on @mattis). No amount of explaining would get across the point that he thrived better while up in the skies, it still ‘counted as moving’ to all involved parties!

Even if he’d already mentioned that it was part of his gym challenges, it still didn’t fly!

The bluenette was somewhere else today, so he had to…pilot…the wheelchair himself.

Before he could even say ‘hi’ to Matias, a little blue blob literally shot out from somewhere behind him, letting out this curious, happy-sounding noise before approaching Matias and waving furiously at him.

“Hi. Zelle remembers you, apparently,” he chuckled.

the sudden appearance of the phione doesn't surprise him; it does, however, surprise the noibat on his shoulder, who immediately screeches before flying away.

"hi, zelle."

he chuckles as he turns to greet the water-type, waving in return. he glances back at alexei over his shoulder.

"i like the wheelchair."

The little blue blob squinted after the Noibat, before chasing after said Pokémon. Had she scared it away?! Now, she wouldn’t have that at all! She just wanted to make a new friend.

“Haha,” he chuckled dryly.

“Much as I wanted to give you a run for your money with my non-trad challenges, alas, I’ve been banned from flying,” he said with his cheeks puffed up like a chipmunk’s. It sucked.

“So I’m stuck to the ground, and limited to traditional-style battles. Is it going to be singles or doubles?”

blissey (f) healer - life dew, heal pulse, copycat, soft-boiled, minimize, protect

it's a good thing noibat doesn't just turn around and smack the phione because that would've been awful. she continues to be frightened by the water-type, flying around in an attempt to get away.

"banned from flying? wow."

that sounds horrible.

Hell, even his own avians could sense the trepidation rolling off their human companion in waves.

His eyebrows went up slightly at the Snorlax—those were literal blockade problems—but he believed he had a solution for that. Hopefully.

Wheeling himself begrudgingly over to the opposite side of the arena (honestly, this shit would’ve been faster had he been allowed to walk) he then made his choices—

A Hawlucha, accompanied by the very same Gyarados he’d once used against Lulu Flint in a previous Gym Battle—only this time he was hoping said Gyarados was going to listen.

And where was the Phione in all this? Still chasing the Noibat round, trying to calm them down!

matias looks across the battlefield at their opponents, sizing them up briefly before turning to his own.

As the battle begins to rage below, the Phione’s busy, chasing down the Noibat and trying to explain herself that she doesn’t mean to scare the other—that she only wants to make a new friend!

Back where the battle was about to begin—he blinked. Normally the challenger got the first move, but so be it—this was going to be risky. Seeing the Snorlax made him think—what if the big-ass bugger knew…

The Hawlucha decided to take the first move, preparing to go forward and be the vanguard with a burst of Agility.

This was before—it started to rain.

Hera had summoned a powerful Rain Dance that began to spread across the battlefield.

Taking this as a sign, he then zipped up his jacket and raised the hood, because this was going to get messy.

not many like battling in the rain, as made clear to him when they'd voice their distaste whenever he made it rain. briefly, he thought of his gym battle with John Sullivan, and how it had rained then, too.

sucker.

snorlax points a single finger, summoning a strike of THUNDER to crack down at the gyarados. blissey points as well, summoning another strike of THUNDER as she uses COPYCAT.

meanwhile, noibat dips back down towards matias.

And there it was.

Funneling their attacks towards just one Pokémon—of course Hera was sturdier than that! But taking two in a row would be bad, so—

A powerful, gale-force Hurricane burst emerged, attempting to stave off the first strike of Thunder (but leaving her open for the second strike in the process) so at least the effects weren’t going to be mostly—

He then realized it.

“Go!” was all he would say, watching as the Hawlucha rushed forward, propelled from the earlier burst of speed before striking at the Snorlax with a Low Kick attack.

Surely that would at least hit something, right?

Up in the air, the Phione was still chasing the Noibat down—she really only wanted to make friends! Come on!

it seems almost a bit cheap to fight a battle this way, but it's also amusing for him to watch a shield of PROTECT form right as the LOW KICK connects, bouncing it off the snorlax.

up close, all snorlax has to do is sneeze out a THUNDER that strikes the hawlucha at almost point-blank range.

noibat continues to fly, perhaps starting to find some fun in this chase.

The Phione was making distressed noises—come on, why didn’t the Noibat wanna slow down?! They were nothing like Fenrir (Alexei’s Noivern) but she still wanted to make new friends after all!

Back down on the ground, the Hawlucha rocketed away with a last-second burst of Agility the moment the attempt bounced off and the incoming blast of Thunder threatened to crash down on him—which then left the Gyarados open this time; aiming a Hydro Pump at the Blissey this time.

blissey is a tanky bitch which allows her to take the HYDRO PUMP with relative ease. it impacts against her stomach, knocking the wind out of her. she puffs her cheek, retaliating at the same time as another THUNDER erupts from the snorlax.

with a COPYCAT, another THUNDER strikes at either target.

noivern, despite the rain, remains agile as ever, DRAGON RUSHING away.

There was—a plan.

While it was risky, it would definitely involve getting hit a couple of times—or maybe just even once—before the Hawlucha could even execute what he had in mind.

So the moment the first blast struck, he took it like a luchador, never mind if it stung because of the torrential downpour. Either way, he squared his shoulders before rushing forward and suddenly jumping into the air; an attempt at a Flying Press attack!

At the same time, though, the Gyarados saw the incoming strike and released a gale-force Hurricane funnel of wind to block the burst of lightning.

Up in the sky, the Phione was pouting to all hell; before deciding to use Tail Glow as she continued to chase after the Noibat.
