It had been unexpected.

Just as unexpected as this visit probably is.

Not like he wasn’t planning on it happening anyway, given that he had just spent hours at Route 116 – working, mind you; searching for Unown with a researcher under Team Rocket’s orders, of all things. But, originally he had planned to at least make a stop to bring takeout or something with him.

Instead, thanks to that one seemingly miniscule thing that had happened during his search, he had made his way straight for Cian’s apartment after arriving at Rustboro.
[break][break]
And, now he’s here, right outside the door; all of his excitement for now contained and hidden behind a simple yet ever-confident smirk.

The doorbell rings, and he waits patiently.

the doorbell catches him off guard, naturally, and he's left scrambling to get off the couch and head towards the door, not expecting anything from it.

but when it opens, he's pleasantly surprised.

Of course he won’t say what just yet, leaving it as a surprise and purposefully pushing what little patience his beloved boyfriend has within him when it comes to that sort of thing. As per usual.

A step closer and honey-coloured eyes meet Cian’s, Mars allowing himself to gently lean against the doorframe.

”Buuut... If you want to wait to know what it is, then I can go grab us pizza and come back. Up to you, babe.”

Now that he told him he has a surprise? Unlikely.

to be honest, a lot of things are better than pizza because cian's not that big of a fan in the first place, but his mind does wander a bit.

"nah, pizza can wait."

he leans in to kiss mar's cheek, then steps back, gesturing into the apartment.

It’s probably not what he would have brought for them if he had stopped for takeout, but it’s not as if Mars minds the thought of pizza all that much. As picky as he may be about things sometimes, he doesn’t usually dislike it, and in the end, food is definitely not what matters the most right now...

The kiss on his cheek causes the smirk to shift into a slight smile, and it’s soon matched by one on Cian’s own. Mars steps forward into the apartment, and looking back, he meets Cian’s gaze once more.

”Do you really want to know?”

Of course he does.

”It’s something you’ll be really happy about.”
[break][break]
Despite delaying things, the smile he gives him is honest, because it’s also something he is about. He reaches for Cian’s hand then, pulling him towards the couch.

After so many visits to Cian’s apartment and with how frequently he spends his time there, going directly to the couch seems only natural and right – as if that’s exactly where they’re supposed to be.

Plus, having just spent so long walking through Route 116, it’s just comfortable.

There’s a gentle squeeze of his hand, and a second later, Mars changes his grip. Calmly, he reaches into the pocket of his jacket, then placing a minimized Luxury Ball right on Cian’s palm.

”Open it.”

This time, he grins.

And yet, despite being fully aware of this, Mars still smiles at Cian’s words, even going as far as chuckling.

”Cian, I got you something much better than any legendary.”

The value of something, its worth, things like those are not just determined by what’s intrinsic. To the right person, under the right circumstances, even the smallest, most ordinary, and most insignificant of things can be the greatest treasure there is, and this is not something Mars just knows thanks to his years studying economy and as a businessman.

When he says that what dwells within that shimmering Luxury Ball is better than a legendary pokémon, he says it because he knows that to Cian it probably is...

The Luxury Ball pops open, and it appears in a flash of light: a small grey pokémon that floats right between them. One that, upon seeing Cian, smiles with joy and heads right over to bump against him, for it’s that same small Castform that floated right out the window almost two weeks ago and that they had been searching for ever since.

The scene warms Mars’ heart, and he can’t help but smile.

”Welcome home, Cian Junior.”

there are very few things out there that are better than a legendary, so what could it be? what rests inside this peculiar luxury ball that exceeds the likes of an urshifu?

then it hits him.

the same time the luxury ball pops open, actually.

"my son!"

he can't help but pull the castform into a big hug, snuggling the normal-type into his chest. smiling, he tilts his head over briefly to look at mars.

"where did you find him?"

It’s doubtful that there’s any legendary pokémon out there that would have received a reaction like this, so perhaps Mars had been right: that little Castform is the best gift he could have ever given Cian.

The one they both missed and hoped would one day return to their side.

”Right over at Route 116, actually… Though it’s more like Cian Junior found me. Came floating right to me while I was on this Rocket assignment, so I figured I’d try my luck with a pokéball so we wouldn’t lose her again. Crazy, right? Guess maybe before she didn’t want to be caught or something.”

It’s difficult to tell why he managed to catch the Castform now when their previous attempts failed, but if anything, Mars is just glad that the little pokémon seems to like him enough to have approached him and let him capture her...

”Oh, yeah, by the way… ‘He’ is apparently a ‘she’.”

He smirks then, doubting Cian will actually care to correct himself. Not like the Castform seems to mind, either way.

maybe cian junior was hiding from some pesky adventurers. either way, he's grateful mars was out there today.

at the correction mars offers, cian simply shrugs.

There’s a wink, even though Mars is well aware that the more likely option is that Cian Junior was wandering around and only found his way back to Route 116 recently – perhaps even just in time to see him there. Still, the thought is nice, even if there’s still a clear preference here…

It really is.

Even if technically Cian Junior was not his or Cian's pokémon before.
